Having talked about the approach that Christians should take towards suffering, Peter now goes on to describe how knowledge of the future should shape our present living, both in terms of how we relate to God and how we relate to others. v7 Since the end of all things is at hand (it is near, despite us not knowing when exactly it will occur), Peter says that Christians should seek to be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of their prayers. This stresses the importance of prayer as we anticipate the second coming for Christ, and provides us with the approach we are to take in making sure that we are devoted to prayer. vv. 8-11 Christians not only need to be mindful of their relationship with God (prayer), they are also to relate to "one another" in love (v8), hospitality (v9) and service (v10) in order that glory would be brought to God - a recurrent theme in this letter. v10 guards us against any excuses we may come up with to not serve one another. Each has indeed been given a gift, and so we should neither think that we don't have any and so are unable to serve, nor that we should keep it to ourselves. The focus is on bringing glory to God - that is the challenge and call for every Christian as they live their lives.
