Interpretation: Paul finds it necessary to send Epaphroditus to the Philippians. Epaphroditus is a fellow worker of Paul's and has had previous correspondence with the Philippians. He has, however been seriously ill, near death. But God had mercy on him and on Paul also so that he wouldn't be even more grieved. Therefore Paul is eager to send Epaphroditus so that the Philippians may rejoice in seeing him again, and so that Paul won't be as worried about him. Paul wishes that they receive Epaphroditus with joy and honor him for the work that he has done for Christ, in which he almost died but yet was faithful in serving. Application: (i) How does this challenge our attitude towards serving Christ? How willing and how far will we go for the sake of the gospel? (ii) Does the Christian Attitude from earlier arcs ("for the live is Christ, and to die is gain") show through the way we deal with life situations?

and has been distressed
because you heard that he was ill.

Indeed he was ill,
near to death.
But God had mercy on him,
and not only on him but on me also,
lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.

I am the more eager to send him, therefore,
that you may rejoice at seeing him again,
and that I may be less anxious.
