Interpretation: Paul will rejoice because he has confidence that through the prayers of the Philippians and the help of the Spirit, this will work towards his deliverance. His eager expectation and hope is that he won't be at all ashamed (of the gospel which is being proclaimed, of his imprisonment), but rather that Christ will be honored through him by life or by death. Because for Paul, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Application: (i) Paul saw the need for both prayer from others AND the help of the Spirit. So asking others to pray for us is not a sign of weakness nor an indication of not trusting in the Spirit's power - the two are compatible and work together. (ii) Prayer that Christ will indeed be honored in our lives regardless of our circumstances and that we can truly join Paul in saying "For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain".
