Interpretation: In light of the difficult lives that Christians should be prepared to face (1:27-30), Paul therefore urges the Philippians to stand united in mind, in love and in spirit. We can see the importance of this to Paul by observing how the achievement of this will complete his joy, i.e. this is the missing cog required to complete his joyfulness. The completion of joy is needless to say quite an accomplishment, and something definitely worth pursuing after. Furthermore, he instructs them to have a humility such that they value the importance of the people around them. In order to count others more significant than themselves, they should think beyond their own interests and consider the interests of others. Application: (i) The difficult life which we should expect to face as a Christian gives us all the more reason to stand united in the faith. The unity which we seek is not based on cultural or physical aspects, but a unity of mind, of love and of spirit. (ii) A key element to obtaining this unity is humility - therefore pray that we would be all the more humble as we interact with those around us.
