Interpretation: Paul puts no confidence in the flesh, even though he has the credentials for it. But instead he counts all this supposed gain that he has as loss because of Christ and how much it means to him to know Christ. Paul explains how he considers everything he has as worthless in comparison, in order that he may gain Christ and be found in him, having a righteousness that comes from God through faith in Christ. He also wants to know Christ and the power of his resurrection; he wishes to share Christ's sufferings, becoming like him in his death, so that he may also be raised one day in glory. Application: (i) What are the idols in your life? Do you consider them as gain or loss? (ii) What place does Jesus have in relation to these idols? Do you really value Christ enough that you can honestly say you consider everything else (money, fame, family, etc) as worthless in comparison?
