This section begins with t he Israelites questioning the continued existence of evil and why a just God hasn't already dealt with the problem. Again we see an example of the Israelites doubting God. We are told that the day will come when "the Lord", "the messenger of the covenant", will come to refine and purify his people (vv. 2-4), as well as judge (v5). vv. 2-4 The roles of the refiner's fire and the fullers' soap were to purify and cleanse. We see that after this process, the offerings brought to the LORD will be pleasing, just as they were in the past. This is in stark contrast to the defiled offerings which were being brought before God in 1:6-14. The refining work done by Jesus will bring about a complete change of heart. v. 5 A list of various sinful acts is listed here. The key issue is with the lack of fear shown towards the LORD of hosts. The heart of all these problems we've seen in Malachi so far deal with wrong attitudes towards God. Jesus has come and will return again to judge the world. Application As Christians we must look forward to the second coming of Jesus, when evil will be dealt with, and prepare ourselves by diligently growing in godliness.

Malachi 2:17-3:5
OT
esv
You have wearied the LORD with your words.
But you say, "How have we wearied him?"
By saying, "Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the LORD, and he delights in them."
Or by asking, "Where is the God of justice?"

"Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me.
And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple;
and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.
series
But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears?
For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap.
He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver,
and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the LORD.
Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD
as in the days of old and as in former years.
