Central Idea Paul intends to send perhaps his most valued companion (while he remains in jail!) to the Philippians, for his own joy. Insights Jesus said it and Paul believes it... it is more blessed to give than to receive. And so what does Paul do with the person perhaps the most dear to his heart in all the world? He gives him away to bless others. He does not do this, however, altuistically--but rather toward the end that he himself may increase his joy in their joy.

I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon,
so that I too may be cheered by news of you.
actionpurpose
For I have no one like him,
who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare.
ideaexplanation
For they all seek their own interests,
not those of Jesus Christ.
inference
But you know Timothy's proven worth,
how as a son with a father
he has served with me in the gospel.
