Central Idea Because you (Philippians) are in my Gospel-centered heart, I (Paul) confidently both thank God for and pray toward your completed sanctification, to the glory of God. Insights/Application Our confidence in what God will do does not imply we need not pray earnestly for it! Paul's heartbeat was centered on the Gospel. The Philippians were in his heart, not because they were natural friends or similar personalities, but because they were with Paul in being all about the Gospel. Father, make us into such people that in our Jesus-centeredness we cannot help but abound in love for one another. Remaining Question It has been suggested to me that vs 6 is not really talking about continued sanctification and ultimate salvation, but rather about evangelism--God completing the salvific work among the Philippians (i.e. Paul is confident that all those God has chosen in Philippi will be brought into salvation and the church). While this is certainly possible (since what is translated "in" could be also translated "among"), it does not seem to be the simplest interpretation to me and I have yet to see enough convincing evidence for it. Additionally, vs 10b is very close in context and is clearly talking about sanctification in conjuction with the day of Christ. Thoughts anyone?

Philippians 1:3-11
NT
esv
mine
I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all
I get to thank my God all the time whenever I remember you, every time I pray for all of you
making my prayer with joy,
and do so with a joyful spirit
actionmanner
because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.
because you are with me in the Gospel!
ground
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
And therefore (because you are in the Gospel), I am sure of your continued sanctification and ultimate salvation.
inference
It is right for me to feel this way about you all,
And my joyful prayer and certainty is so right,
because I hold you in my heart,
because you are in my heart!
for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.
[And why are you in my heart?] because as I receive grace in my suffering for the Gospel, you are right there with me.
For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.
God knows that it is true ! - I love you with a Jesus-like heart!!
ideaexplanation
And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment,
And so , I am compelled to pray for you - that your love may grow, with knowledge
so that you may approve what is excellent,
for the purpose that you may look at life, see all kinds of different situations and realities and know what is good
and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,
as this would result in your blamelessness
filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ,
namely , righteousness will be popping out of you in a hundred different ways through Jesus
actionpurpose
actionresult
to the glory and praise of God.
toward the grand purpose of it all: the spread of God's glory and praise in our beings and the world!
