The Spirit's Work in God's Inspired Word

Dear Christians in Corinth, I first came to you hoping that you would believe the gospel without relying on any of my own assumptions about you, and dependent fully on the power of God to save you through the work of the Holy Spirit. Now I come to you, you who have received the gospel, as one with authority and ability to impart to you wisdom that I have received not from the world, but from the Holy Spirit of God by His revelation, illumination and inspiration. The world in their sinfulness and blindness will never understand, but because we have Christ, we have received the indwelling Spirit of the living God, and have been made able to comprehend and interpret this godly wisdom with an unyielding, Spirit-saturated confidence.

WHEN I came to you

x did not come proclaiming to you y the testimony 2 of God with lofty speech or wisdom.

I did NOT come preaching the gospel in arrogance

IN ORDER THAT you might not love what the world tells you to believe

NEVERTHELESS, NOW THAT YOU BELIEVE, we speak in utter confidence to help and guide you

although it is not f a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age,

WHAT I MEAN IS THAT this message that we preach in confidence is NOT something comprehensible by this present world

g who are doomed to pass away.

IN OTHER WORDS, a world of people and authorities that shall pass

But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God,

RATHER, we impart the wisdom of the almighty God

h which God decreed

IN OTHER WORDS, the very word of God

before the ages

WHICH WAS declared BEFORE the world and this present age

for our glory.

FOR THE PURPOSE OF that we might know Him (through Christ - His and our glory)

None of i the rulers of this age understood this,

IN OTHER WORDS, DESPITE none of the "upper-class" or "highly educated" of the world get this

BECAUSE IF they did understand

they would not have crucified k the Lord of glory.

THEN they wouldn't have put Christ to death (because he proclaimed Godly, ageless wisdom

NEVERTHELESS (despite rulers not getting this), it is written,

l “What no eye has seen,

NO one sees it by himself

nor ear heard,

AND NO one hears it by himself

nor the heart of man imagined,

AND NO heart is soft enough to have comprehended the riches

what God has m prepared n for those who love him”—

IN OTHER WORDS, what isn't comprehended by the sinful man is the gift God intends to give to those He loves and who love Him

these things o God has revealed to us

RATHER, God is the one who causes us to see, hear and comprehend

through the Spirit.

BY the illuminating power of the Holy Spirit

BECAUSE it is the Spirit who knows all God knows

even p the depths of God.

MORE SPECIFICALLY, He knows the deepest thoughts of God

IN OTHER WORDS, NO one can know what a person is really thinking

q except the spirit of that person, which is in him?

EXCEPT FOR the person himself

So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God

SO TOO, NO one knows what God is really thinking

Now r we have received not s the spirit of the world,

FURTHERMORE, what we know to be true is NOT from the world

but the Spirit who is from God,

BUT it is from the Spirit of and from God

that we might understand the things freely given us by God.

IN ORDER THAT we might understand what God graciously gives us (in Christ)

And we impart this t in words not taught by human wisdom

FURTHERMORE, the words we use, how we use them, and convey them to you are not based in human ordering and reason

but taught by the Spirit,

RATHER they were taught to us and imparted to us by the Spirit Himself

u interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. 1

BY INTERPRETING and COMPARING these truths to and with those who will understand (those who have received the Spirit)

The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God,

MEANING, ON THE ONE HAND the natural person does not get what the Spirit is trying to convey

for they are v folly to him,

BECAUSE it confuses him

and w he is not able to understand them

FURTHERMORE, he cannot comprehend it

because they are spiritually discerned.

BECAUSE they are blind to the truth

The x spiritual person judges all things,

ON THE OTHER HAND, someone who has received the Spirit is able to judge all that he sees according to the truth

but is himself to be judged by no one.

BUT he CANNOT be put to shame by those who are in the world, because they are not spiritual

y “For who has understood the mind of the Lord

IN OTHER WORDS, no one has, on his own, come to know the Lord's mind and reasons so well

so as to instruct him?”

RESULTING IN his ability to instruct the Lord.

But z we have the mind of Christ.

CONVERSELY, we have received the knowledge of God given to us by the Holy Spirit who reveals to us the truth in Christ.

the spiritually blind cannot see and cannot behold, but because we have been given the Spirit of light, we can see, we can behold.

I did NOT come in my own power, BUT in the power of the Holy Spirit, SO that you might know that all I did and said came from God (and not from me)

It is the Spirit, who is Himself God, that knows of God's mind, and He has revealed it to us! The depths of God have been revealed to us in the glorious truth(s) of Scripture!

Wisdom not of man, but of God revealed to us by the Holy Spirit

verses 1-5 - I came to you at first like you were babies - you knew nothing, and I assumed you knew nothing, and I gave you nothing except the gospel and the outward working of the Holy Spirit Verses 6-11 - BUT NOW, I come to you to tell you the truth, which has been revealed to us not by the power or insight of man, but by the revelation of God through His Spirit, who is, Himself, God.

Inspiration of Scripture

At first, I came to give you the bare bones of the gospel (like a parent giving a gift softly too its child) BUT now, I come to speak some sense into you (as children who comprehend and are in need of discipline), AND just like before, I come in the power of the Holy Spirit with a message from the Holy Spirit
