Central Idea: As the "Jews" judge and seek to kill Jesus because of His claims of equality with God - judging Him (supposedly) according to the law of Moses - Jesus judges them as those who do not hear, see, or believe God at all. If they really believed Moses, they would believe Jesus, since Moses wrote of Him. So, their initial respect for John the Baptist and their self-proclaimed respect for the Scriptures are both shown to be false because neither John nor the Scriptures are truly heard, understood, or believed. Ideas to consider: 1. Jesus, like Moses, David, and the prophets, is the preeminent "sent one." 2. Like Nabal rejecting David in favor of Saul, the new is rejected in favor of the old. 3. As the Jews vindicated themselves because of inclusion within the proscribed circle of the Law of Moses (e.g. inside the covenant bounds established by Mosaic Law), so we Gentiles vindicate ourselves on the basis of "wisdom" (for the Greeks seek for wisdom, and we often see ourselves as on the right "track" because we use the Scripture, not to get to Jesus, but to have "successful" lives. In both cases, God's Word is misused and misapplied and will accuse us in the end. 4. How we are content with religion (zealous calls to repentance and fiery sermons, as well as fervent disciplines of the Christian life - parallel John the B and Scripture study), so long as we don't encounter the true and living Christ in the process (quote CS Lewis in Miracles .

If I alone bear witness about myself,
my testimony is not deemed true.
conditional
There is another who bears witness about me,
and I know that the testimony that he bears about me is true.
alternative
progression
You sent to John,
and he has borne witness to the truth.
situationresponse
Not that the testimony that I receive is from man,
but I say these things
so that you may be saved.
actionpurpose
negativepositive
He was a burning
and shining lamp,
series
and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.
actionresult
But the testimony that I have is greater than that of John.
For the works that the Father has given me to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, bear witness about me
that the Father has sent me.
ideaexplanation
ground
And the Father who sent me has himself borne witness about me.
His voice you have never heard,
his form you have never seen,
and you do not have his word abiding in you,
for you do not believe the one whom he has sent.
You search the Scriptures
because you think that in them you have eternal life;
and it is they that bear witness about me,
yet you refuse to come to me
that you may have life.
I do not receive glory from people.
But I know that you do not have the love of God within you.
I have come in my Father's name,
and you do not receive me.
If another comes in his own name,
you will receive him.
How can you believe,
when you receive glory from one another
and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?
Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father.
There is one who accuses you: Moses, on whom you have set your hope.
For if you believed Moses,
you would believe me;
for he wrote of me.
But if you do not believe his writings,
how will you believe my words?"
