Καθὼς γέγραπται ἐν τῷ Ἠσαΐᾳ τῷ προφήτῃ• ἰδοὺ ἀποστέλλω τὸν ἄγγελόν μου πρὸ προσώπου σου,
b As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, 1 c “Behold, I am sending my messenger before your face,

c Now after John was handed over,

Jesus d came into Galilee,

He commands even the unclean spirits,

καὶ ἐξῆλθεν ἡ ἀκοὴ αὐτοῦ εὐθὺς πανταχοῦ εἰς ὅλην τὴν περίχωρον τῆς Γαλιλαίας.
And immediately his fame went out everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
Καὶ εὐθὺς ἐκ τῆς συναγωγῆς ἐξελθόντες ἦλθον εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν Σίμωνος καὶ Ἀνδρέου μετὰ Ἰακώβου καὶ Ἰωάννου.
v And immediately after going out of the synagogue, he came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
ἡ δὲ πενθερὰ Σίμωνος κατέκειτο πυρέσσουσα,
Now x Simon’s mother-in-law was laying ill with a fever,
καὶ εὐθὺς λέγουσιν αὐτῷ περὶ αὐτῆς.
and immediately they are telling him about her.
καὶ προσελθὼν ἤγειρεν αὐτὴν κρατήσας τῆς χειρός•
And coming, he raised her, by taking her by the hand
καὶ ἀφῆκεν αὐτὴν ὁ πυρετός,
and the fever left her,
καὶ διηκόνει αὐτοῖς.
and she began to serve [impf] them.
Ὀψίας δὲ γενομένης, ὅτε ἔδυ ὁ ἥλιος, ἔφερον πρὸς αὐτὸν πάντας τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας καὶ τοὺς δαιμονιζομένους•
That evening at sundown they were bringing to him all who were sick or z oppressed by demons.
καὶ ἦν ὅλη ἡ πόλις ἐπισυνηγμένη πρὸς τὴν θύραν.
[because?] the whole city had been gathered at the door.
καὶ ἐθεράπευσεν πολλοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας ποικίλαις νόσοις *
a And he healed many who were sick with various diseases,
καὶ δαιμόνια πολλὰ ἐξέβαλεν
and cast out many demons.
καὶ οὐκ ἤφιεν λαλεῖν τὰ δαιμόνια,
And b he would not permit the demons to speak,
ὅτι ᾔδεισαν αὐτόν.

c And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark,

And Simon and those who were with him hunted for him,

and they found him and are saying to him, e “Everyone is seeking you.”
καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς• ἄγωμεν ἀλλαχοῦ εἰς τὰς ἐχομένας κωμοπόλεις,
And he said to them, “Let us go elsewhere, to the next towns,
ἵνα καὶ ἐκεῖ κηρύξω•
that also there I may be preaching,
εἰς τοῦτο γὰρ ἐξῆλθον.
for this is why I came out.”

And [after] he returned to t Capernaum for some days,
ἠκούσθη ὅτι ἐν οἴκῳ ἐστίν.
it was heard that he is at home.
καὶ συνήχθησαν πολλοὶ
And many were gathered together,
ὥστε μηκέτι χωρεῖν μηδὲ τὰ πρὸς τὴν θύραν,
so that there was no longer room, not even at the door.
καὶ ἐλάλει αὐτοῖς τὸν λόγον.
And he was speaking the word to them.
καὶ ἔρχονται
u And they are coming,
φέροντες πρὸς αὐτὸν παραλυτικὸν αἰρόμενον ὑπὸ τεσσάρων.
[in that they are] bringing to him a paralytic carried by four men.
καὶ μὴ δυνάμενοι προσενέγκαι αὐτῷ διὰ τὸν ὄχλον
And [because] they were not able to present him because of the crowd,
ἀπεστέγασαν τὴν στέγην ὅπου ἦν,
v they unroofed the roof where he was,
καὶ ἐξορύξαντες
and [after] they had made an opening,
χαλῶσιν τὸν κράβαττον ὅπου ὁ παραλυτικὸς κατέκειτο.
they are letting down the cot where the paralytic would lay.
καὶ ἰδὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὴν πίστιν αὐτῶν
And [because; after?] Jesus w saw their faith,
λέγει τῷ παραλυτικῷ• τέκνον, ἀφίενταί σου αἱ ἁμαρτίαι.
he says to the paralytic, “Son, x your sins are forgiven.”
ἦσαν δέ τινες τῶν γραμματέων ἐκεῖ καθήμενοι καὶ διαλογιζόμενοι ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις αὐτῶν•
Now some of the scribes were sitting there and were pondering [2x impf periphr] in their hearts,
τί οὗτος οὕτως λαλεῖ;
“Why does this man speak in this way? [This man should not be speaking in this way!"]
βλασφημεῖ•
y He is blaspheming!
τίς δύναται ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας εἰ μὴ εἷς ὁ θεός;
z Who is able to be forgiving sins except the one God?” [No one is able to be forgiving except the one God.]
καὶ εὐθὺς ἐπιγνοὺς ὁ Ἰησοῦς τῷ πνεύματι αὐτοῦ ὅτι οὕτως διαλογίζονται ἐν ἑαυτοῖς
And [because he] recognized in his spirit that they are debating in this way within themselves,
λέγει αὐτοῖς• τί ταῦτα διαλογίζεσθε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν;
immediately Jesus is saying to them, “Why are you debating these things in your hearts? [You should not be debating these things in your hearts]
τί ἐστιν εὐκοπώτερον, εἰπεῖν τῷ παραλυτικῷ• ἀφίενταί σου αἱ ἁμαρτίαι,
Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’
ἢ εἰπεῖν• ἔγειρε καὶ ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου καὶ περιπάτει;
or to say, ‘Be rising, take up your bed and be walking’?
ἵνα δὲ εἰδῆτε ὅτι ἐξουσίαν ἔχει ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀφιέναι ἁμαρτίας ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς - λέγει τῷ παραλυτικῷ•
But in order that you might know that b the Son of Man is having authority on earth to be forgiving sins”—he says to the paralytic—
σοὶ λέγω, ἔγειρε ἆρον τὸν κράβαττόν σου
“I am saying to you, be rising, pick up your bed,
καὶ ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου.
and be going into your home.”
καὶ ἠγέρθη καὶ εὐθὺς
And he rose and immediately,
ἄρας τὸν κράβαττον
and after taking up his bed,
ἐξῆλθεν ἔμπροσθεν πάντων,
went out before everyone,
ὥστε ἐξίστασθαι πάντας καὶ δοξάζειν τὸν θεὸν
so that they were all being amazed and c were glorifying God,
λέγοντας ὅτι οὕτως οὐδέποτε εἴδομεν.
[in that they are] saying , “We never saw such a thing!”

Main point summary
Jesus enjoying eschatological fellowship with tax-collectors, etc., as expressed in his mission to call the sick sinners to fellowship with him, in that there is a new eschatological wine to be celebrated and enjoyed (even as the cross looms).

He went out again beside the sea,

and he was teaching them.
Καὶ παράγων εἶδεν Λευὶν τὸν τοῦ Ἁλφαίου καθήμενον ἐπὶ τὸ τελώνιον,
e And as he was passing by, he saw f Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax booth,
καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ• ἀκολούθει μοι.
and he says to him, “Be following me.”
καὶ ἀναστὰς ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ.
And after rising, he followed him.
Καὶ γίνεται κατακεῖσθαι αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ αὐτοῦ,
And he is reclining in his house,
καὶ πολλοὶ τελῶναι καὶ ἁμαρτωλοὶ συνανέκειντο τῷ Ἰησοῦ καὶ τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ•
and many g tax collectors and [other?] sinners would dine (impf) with Jesus and his disciples,
ἦσαν γὰρ πολλοὶ καὶ ἠκολούθουν αὐτῷ.
for there were many who were following (impf) him.
ἰδόντες ὅτι ἐσθίει μετὰ τῶν ἁμαρτωλῶν καὶ τελωνῶν
And because they saw that he is eating with the sinners and [in particular] tax collectors,
καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς τῶν Φαρισαίων . . . ἔλεγον τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ• ὅτι μετὰ τῶν τελωνῶν καὶ ἁμαρτωλῶν ἐσθίει;
the scribes of1 the Pharisees, . . . said to his disciples, g “Why does he eat 2 with tax collectors and [other] sinners?”[Or: "Is he eating with the tax collectors and sinners?"]
καὶ ἀκούσας ὁ Ἰησοῦς λέγει αὐτοῖς [ὅτι] οὐ χρείαν ἔχουσιν οἱ ἰσχύοντες ἰατροῦ
And because Jesus heard it, he is saying to them, “Those who are well/strong are having no need [word order] of a physician,
ἀλλʼ οἱ κακῶς ἔχοντες•
but those who are sick [pun: wicked?].
οὐκ ἦλθον καλέσαι δικαίους
i I came not to call the righteous,
ἀλλʼ ἁμαρτωλούς.
j but [I came to call] sinners.”
Καὶ ἦσαν οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι νηστεύοντες.
And k John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting [imperfect periph].
καὶ ἔρχονται καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ• διὰ τί οἱ μαθηταὶ Ἰωάννου καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ τῶν Φαρισαίων νηστεύουσιν,
And they [?] are coming and say ing to him , l “Why are John’s disciples and m the disciples of the Pharisees fasting,
οἱ δὲ σοὶ μαθηταὶ οὐ νηστεύουσιν;
but your disciples are not fasting?”
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς• μὴ δύνανται οἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ νυμφῶνος ἐν ᾧ ὁ νυμφίος μετʼ αὐτῶν ἐστιν νηστεύειν;
And Jesus said to them, n “The groomsmen aren't able to fast while the groom is with them, can they?
ὅσον χρόνον ἔχουσιν τὸν νυμφίον μετʼ αὐτῶν
For as much time as they have the groom with them,
οὐ δύνανται νηστεύειν.
they cannot fast.
ἐλεύσονται δὲ ἡμέραι ὅταν ἀπαρθῇ ἀπʼ αὐτῶν ὁ νυμφίος,
o But: the days will come whenever the groom is taken away from them,
καὶ τότε νηστεύσουσιν ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ.
and p then they will fast in that day.
Οὐδεὶς ἐπίβλημα ῥάκους ἀγνάφου ἐπιράπτει ἐπὶ ἱμάτιον παλαιόν•
No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment.
εἰ δὲ μή, αἴρει τὸ πλήρωμα ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ τὸ καινὸν τοῦ παλαιοῦ
Otherwise, the patch tears away from it, the new from the old,
καὶ χεῖρον σχίσμα γίνεται.
and a worse tear exists.
καὶ οὐδεὶς βάλλει οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς παλαιούς•
And no one puts new wine into old q wineskins.
εἰ δὲ μή, ῥήξει ὁ οἶνος τοὺς ἀσκοὺς
Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins—
καὶ ὁ οἶνος ἀπόλλυται καὶ οἱ ἀσκοί•
and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins.

how he entered the house of God, in the time of 1 x Abiathar the high priest,
καὶ τοὺς ἄρτους τῆς προθέσεως ἔφαγεν,

whether he will heal him on the Sabbath,

καὶ λέγει τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τῷ τὴν ξηρὰν χεῖρα ἔχοντι• ἔγειρε εἰς τὸ μέσον.
And he says to the man having the stiff hand, “Get up, to the middle!”
καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς• ἔξεστιν τοῖς σάββασιν ἀγαθὸν ποιῆσαι ἢ κακοποιῆσαι,
And he says to them, f “Is it permitted on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm,
ψυχὴν σῶσαι ἢ ἀποκτεῖναι;
to save life or to kill?”
οἱ δὲ ἐσιώπων.
But (δε): they were keeping silent.
καὶ περιβλεψάμενος αὐτοὺς μετʼ ὀργῆς,
And by looking around at them with anger/wrath,
συλλυπούμενος ἐπὶ τῇ πωρώσει τῆς καρδίας αὐτῶν
deeply grieved over the hardness of their heart,
λέγει τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ• ἔκτεινον τὴν χεῖρα.
he says to the man, “Stretch out the hand.”
καὶ ἐξέτεινεν
i He stretched it out,
καὶ ἀπεκατεστάθη ἡ χεὶρ αὐτοῦ.
and his hand was restored.
καὶ ἐξελθόντες οἱ Φαρισαῖοι εὐθὺς μετὰ τῶν Ἡρῳδιανῶν συμβούλιον ἐδίδουν κατʼ αὐτοῦ
j And going out, the Pharisees immediately j held counsel with k the Herodians against him,
ὅπως αὐτὸν ἀπολέσωσιν.

And he goes e home,

ὥστε μὴ δύνασθαι αὐτοὺς μηδὲ ἄρτον φαγεῖν.
f so that they were not able to eat bread.
καὶ ἀκούσαντες οἱ παρʼ αὐτοῦ
g And because h his relatives heard it,
ἐξῆλθον κρατῆσαι αὐτόν•
they went out to seize him,
ἔλεγον γὰρ ὅτι ἐξέστη.
for they were saying, “He i has lost it!”
Καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς οἱ ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων καταβάντες ἔλεγον ὅτι Βεελζεβοὺλ ἔχει
And j the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, k “He has Beelzebul,”
καὶ ὅτι ἐν τῷ ἄρχοντι τῶν δαιμονίων ἐκβάλλει τὰ δαιμόνια.
and “by the prince of demons he is casting out the demons.”
Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος αὐτοὺς
l And after calling them to him,
ἐν παραβολαῖς ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς•
he was speaking to them in parables ,
πῶς δύναται σατανᾶς σατανᾶν ἐκβάλλειν;
“How is Satan able to cast out Satan? [Satan is not able to cast out Satan.]
καὶ ἐὰν βασιλεία ἐφʼ ἑαυτὴν μερισθῇ,
[Because:] If a kingdom is divided against
οὐ δύναται σταθῆναι ἡ βασιλεία ἐκείνη•
itself, that kingdom cannot stand.

καὶ ἐὰν οἰκία ἐφʼ ἑαυτὴν μερισθῇ,
And if a house is divided against itself,
οὐ δυνήσεται ἡ οἰκία ἐκείνη σταθῆναι.

καὶ εἰ ὁ σατανᾶς ἀνέστη ἐφʼ ἑαυτὸν καὶ ἐμερίσθη,
And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided,
οὐ δύναται στῆναι

ἀλλὰ τέλος ἔχει.
but has an end.
ἀλλʼ οὐ δύναται οὐδεὶς εἰς τὴν οἰκίαν τοῦ ἰσχυροῦ εἰσελθὼν τὰ σκεύη αὐτοῦ διαρπάσαι,
Indeed, m no one, after entering a strong man’s house, is able to plunder his goods,
ἐὰν μὴ πρῶτον τὸν ἰσχυρὸν δήσῃ,
unless he first binds the strong man.
καὶ τότε τὴν οἰκίαν αὐτοῦ διαρπάσει.
And then he will plunder his house.
Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι πάντα ἀφεθήσεται τοῖς υἱοῖς τῶν ἀνθρώπων
o “Truly, I am saying to you, all will be forgiven for the sons of men:
τὰ ἁμαρτήματα καὶ αἱ βλασφημίαι ὅσα ἐὰν βλασφημήσωσιν•
sins and blasphemies which they might utter,
ὃς δʼ ἂν βλασφημήσῃ εἰς τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον, οὐκ ἔχει ἄφεσιν εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα,
but whoever might p blaspheme against the Holy Spirit does not have forgiveness into the age,
ἀλλʼ ἔνοχός ἐστιν αἰωνίου ἁμαρτήματος.
but he is guilty of an eternal sin”—
ὅτι ἔλεγον• πνεῦμα ἀκάθαρτον ἔχει.
for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”

q And his mother and his r brothers are coming,
καὶ ἔξω στήκοντες ἀπέστειλαν πρὸς αὐτὸν
and while standing outside they sent to him
καλοῦντες αὐτόν.
in that they were summoning him.
καὶ ἐκάθητο περὶ αὐτὸν ὄχλος,
And a crowd was sitting around him,
καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ• ἰδοὺ ἡ μήτηρ σου καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί σου [καὶ αἱ ἀδελφαί σου] ἔξω ζητοῦσίν σε.
and they are saying to him, “Look! Your mother and your brothers 1 are seeking you outside.”
καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτοῖς λέγει• τίς ἐστιν ἡ μήτηρ μου καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί [μου];
And answering them, he says , “Who is my mother, and my brothers too?” [These are not my mother and brothers.]
καὶ περιβλεψάμενος τοὺς περὶ αὐτὸν κύκλῳ καθημένους
And after s looking about at those who sat around him in a circle,
λέγει• ἴδε ἡ μήτηρ μου καὶ οἱ ἀδελφοί μου.
he says, “Here is my mother and my brothers!
ὃς [γὰρ] ἂν ποιήσῃ τὸ θέλημα τοῦ θεοῦ,
t For whoever u might do the will of God,
οὗτος ἀδελφός μου καὶ ἀδελφὴ καὶ μήτηρ ἐστίν.
this one is my brother and sister and mother.”

And again v he began to be teaching beside the sea.
καὶ συνάγεται πρὸς αὐτὸν ὄχλος πλεῖστος,
And a very large crowd gathers about him,
ὥστε αὐτὸν εἰς πλοῖον ἐμβάντα καθῆσθαι ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ, καὶ πᾶς ὁ ὄχλος πρὸς τὴν θάλασσαν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς ἦσαν.
w so that he got into a boat and sat on the sea, and the whole crowd was beside the sea on the land.

“Be listening!

y Behold, a sower went out to sow.

And it was that as he sowed, some seed fell along the path,
καὶ ἦλθεν τὰ πετεινὰ καὶ κατέφαγεν αὐτό.
and the birds came and devoured it.
καὶ ἄλλο ἔπεσεν ἐπὶ τὸ πετρῶδες ὅπου οὐκ εἶχεν γῆν πολλήν,
Other seed fell on rocky ground, where it did not have much soil,
καὶ εὐθὺς ἐξανέτειλεν
and immediately it sprang up,
διὰ τὸ μὴ ἔχειν βάθος γῆς•
because it had no depth of soil.
καὶ ὅτε ἀνέτειλεν ὁ ἥλιος ἐκαυματίσθη
And z when the sun rose, it was scorched,
καὶ διὰ τὸ μὴ ἔχειν ῥίζαν
and since it had no root,
ἐξηράνθη.
a it withered away.
καὶ ἄλλο ἔπεσεν εἰς τὰς ἀκάνθας, καὶ ἀνέβησαν αἱ ἄκανθαι καὶ συνέπνιξαν αὐτό,
Other seed fell into b thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it,
καὶ καρπὸν οὐκ ἔδωκεν.
and it yielded no grain.
καὶ ἄλλα ἔπεσεν εἰς τὴν γῆν τὴν καλὴν καὶ ἐδίδου καρπὸν
And other seeds [plural] fell into good soil and was giving grain,
ἀναβαίνοντα καὶ αὐξανόμενα
[by] going up and growing
καὶ ἔφερεν ἓν τριάκοντα καὶ ἓν ἑξήκοντα καὶ ἓν ἑκατόν.
and it was yielding thirtyfold and sixtyfold and c a hundredfold.”
καὶ ἔλεγεν• ὃς ἔχει ὦτα ἀκούειν
And he was saying , d “He who is having ears to hear,
ἀκουέτω.
he must hear!”
Καὶ ὅτε ἐγένετο κατὰ μόνας, ἠρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ περὶ αὐτὸν σὺν τοῖς δώδεκα τὰς παραβολάς.
And e when he was alone, those around him with the twelve were asking him about the parables.
καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς• ὑμῖν τὸ μυστήριον δέδοται τῆς βασιλείας τοῦ θεοῦ•
And he was saying to them, f “ To you has been given g the mystery of the kingdom of God,
ἐκείνοις δὲ τοῖς ἔξω ἐν παραβολαῖς τὰ πάντα γίνεται,
but for h those ones outside, all things are in parables,
ἵνα βλέποντες
i in order that “even though they are seeing,
βλέπωσιν καὶ μὴ ἴδωσιν,
they might see and not perceive,
καὶ ἀκούοντες
and even though they are hearing,
ἀκούωσιν καὶ μὴ συνιῶσιν,
they might hear and not understand,
μήποτε ἐπιστρέψωσιν καὶ ἀφεθῇ αὐτοῖς.
in order that they k might not turn and be forgiven.”
Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς• οὐκ οἴδατε τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην,
l And he is saying to them, “Aren't you understanding this parable — [You should understand this parable.]
καὶ πῶς πάσας τὰς παραβολὰς γνώσεσθε;
and how you will understand all the parables? [You should understand how you will understand all the parables.]
ὁ σπείρων τὸν λόγον σπείρει.
m The sower is sowing n the word.
οὗτοι δέ εἰσιν οἱ παρὰ τὴν ὁδόν•
Furthermore (δε): these are the ones along the path:
ὅπου σπείρεται ὁ λόγος
where the word is being sown,
καὶ ὅταν ἀκούσωσιν,
and whenever they might hear,
εὐθὺς ἔρχεται ὁ σατανᾶς καὶ αἴρει τὸν λόγον τὸν ἐσπαρμένον εἰς αὐτούς.
Satan immediately comes and takes away the word that has been sown into them.

And others are the ones sown into thorns:
οὗτοί εἰσιν οἱ τὸν λόγον ἀκούσαντες,
These ones are those who hear the word,

yet, by coming in,
αἱ μέριμναι τοῦ αἰῶνος καὶ ἡ ἀπάτη τοῦ πλούτου καὶ αἱ περὶ τὰ λοιπὰ ἐπιθυμίαι εἰσπορευόμεναι συμπνίγουσιν τὸν λόγον
r the worries of s the age and t the deception of wealth and the desires for the leftovers choke the word,
καὶ ἄκαρπος γίνεται.
[so that] it [the word] becomes fruitless.
καὶ ἐκεῖνοί εἰσιν οἱ ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν τὴν καλὴν σπαρέντες,
But those ones are the ones sown on the good soil:
οἵτινες ἀκούουσιν τὸν λόγον
namely, they are as many as are hearing the word
καὶ παραδέχονται
and accepting it
καὶ καρποφοροῦσιν ἓν τριάκοντα καὶ ἓν ἑξήκοντα καὶ ἓν ἑκατόν.

Isn't it to be placed on a stand?
οὐ γάρ ἐστιν κρυπτὸν ἐὰν μὴ
y For nothing is secret
ἵνα φανερωθῇ,
except to be revealed;
οὐδὲ ἐγένετο ἀπόκρυφον ἀλλʼ
and nothing was/is [aor] anything hidden
ἵνα ἔλθῃ εἰς φανερόν.
except to come into light.
εἴ τις ἔχει ὦτα ἀκούειν
z If anyone is having ears to hear,
ἀκουέτω.
he must hear.”
* Καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς• βλέπετε τί ἀκούετε.
And he was saying to them, “Be watching what you are hearing:
ἐν ᾧ μέτρῳ μετρεῖτε
a [because] with the measuring tool you are measuring,
μετρηθήσεται ὑμῖν
it will be measured to you,
καὶ προστεθήσεται ὑμῖν.
and it will be added to you.
ὃς γὰρ ἔχει,
b For, the one who is having,
δοθήσεται αὐτῷ•
more will be given to him,
καὶ ὃς οὐκ ἔχει,
and the one is not having,
καὶ ὃ ἔχει ἀρθήσεται ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ.
even what he is having will be taken away from him.”
Καὶ ἔλεγεν• οὕτως ἐστὶν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ ὡς ἄνθρωπος βάλῃ τὸν σπόρον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς
And he was saying , c “The kingdom of God is like this: like a man who might throw seed on the soil.
καὶ καθεύδῃ καὶ ἐγείρηται νύκτα καὶ ἡμέραν,
He might be sleeping and rising through night and day,
καὶ ὁ σπόρος βλαστᾷ καὶ μηκύνηται
and the seed might be sprouting and growing;
ὡς οὐκ οἶδεν αὐτός.
d he doesn't know how (it is growing).
αὐτομάτη ἡ γῆ καρποφορεῖ,
The earth is bearing fruit by itself ,
πρῶτον χόρτον εἶτα στάχυν εἶτα πλήρη[ς] σῖτον ἐν τῷ στάχυϊ.
first blade, then ear, then full grain in the ear.
ὅταν δὲ παραδοῖ ὁ καρπός,
But whenever the fruit permits,
εὐθὺς ἀποστέλλει τὸ δρέπανον,
immediately e he is sending the sickle,
ὅτι παρέστηκεν ὁ θερισμός.
because the harvesttime is present.”
Καὶ ἔλεγεν• πῶς ὁμοιώσωμεν τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ ἢ ἐν τίνι αὐτὴν παραβολῇ θῶμεν;
f And he was saying , “With what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or by what parable shall we put it?
ὡς κόκκῳ σινάπεως,
It is like g a grain of mustard seed,
ὃς ὅταν σπαρῇ ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς,
which, whenever it might be sown on the ground,
μικρότερον ὂν πάντων τῶν σπερμάτων τῶν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς,
is the smallest of all the seeds on earth,
καὶ ὅταν σπαρῇ,
even though whenever it might be sown
ἀναβαίνει καὶ γίνεται μεῖζον πάντων τῶν λαχάνων καὶ ποιεῖ κλάδους μεγάλους,
it is going up and becoming larger than all the vegetables and is making large branches,
ὥστε δύνασθαι ὑπὸ τὴν σκιὰν αὐτοῦ τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ κατασκηνοῦν.
so that in its shadow 'the birds of the sky are nesting”

h With many comparable parables he was speaking i the word to them,
καθὼς ἠδύναντο ἀκούειν•
j insofar as they were able to hear it.
χωρὶς δὲ παραβολῆς οὐκ ἐλάλει αὐτοῖς,
So: Without a parable he was not speaking to them,
κατʼ ἰδίαν δὲ τοῖς ἰδίοις μαθηταῖς ἐπέλυεν πάντα.
but l on his own to his own disciples he m was clarifying all things.

u And they came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes. 1
καὶ ἐξελθόντος αὐτοῦ ἐκ τοῦ πλοίου
And after Jesus stepped out of the boat,
εὐθὺς ὑπήντησεν αὐτῷ ἐκ τῶν μνημείων ἄνθρωπος ἐν πνεύματι ἀκαθάρτῳ,
immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit. {strange word order}
ὃς τὴν κατοίκησιν εἶχεν ἐν τοῖς μνήμασιν,
v who had a dwelling among the tombs, {}
καὶ οὐδὲ ἁλύσει οὐκέτι οὐδεὶς ἐδύνατο αὐτὸν δῆσαι
and not even with a chain was anyone able to bind him anymore {}
διὰ τὸ αὐτὸν πολλάκις πέδαις καὶ ἁλύσεσιν δεδέσθαι
because [even though] he had often been bound with shackles and chains, {}
καὶ διεσπάσθαι ὑπʼ αὐτοῦ τὰς ἁλύσεις καὶ τὰς πέδας συντετρῖφθαι,
the chains had been torn by him, and the shackles shattered. {}
καὶ οὐδεὶς ἴσχυεν αὐτὸν δαμάσαι•
[so that] no one had the strength to tame him.
καὶ διὰ παντὸς νυκτὸς καὶ ἡμέρας ἐν τοῖς μνήμασιν καὶ ἐν τοῖς ὄρεσιν
And through the whole night and day among the tombs and on the mountains
ἦν κράζων καὶ κατακόπτων ἑαυτὸν λίθοις.
he would be screaming and cutting himself with stones.
καὶ ἰδὼν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπὸ μακρόθεν
And after he saw Jesus from afar,
ἔδραμεν καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτῷ
he ran and prostrated before him.
καὶ κράξας φωνῇ μεγάλῃ λέγει• τί ἐμοὶ καὶ σοί, Ἰησοῦ υἱὲ τοῦ θεοῦ τοῦ ὑψίστου;
And x crying out with a loud voice, he is saying , “What have you to do with me [there is nothing...], Jesus, y Son of z the Highest God?
ὁρκίζω σε τὸν θεόν, μή με βασανίσῃς.
a I command you by God, do not torment me.”
ἔλεγεν γὰρ αὐτῷ• ἔξελθε τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἀκάθαρτον ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου.
For he was saying to him, “Come out, O unclean spirit, of the man!"
καὶ ἐπηρώτα αὐτόν• τί ὄνομά σοι; καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ• λεγιὼν ὄνομά μοι,
And Jesus was asking him, “What is your name?” And he is saying to him, “My name is b Legion,
ὅτι πολλοί ἐσμεν.
for we are many ones.”
καὶ παρεκάλει αὐτὸν πολλὰ
And he was earnestly exhorting him
ἵνα μὴ αὐτὰ ἀποστείλῃ ἔξω τῆς χώρας.
in order that he might not send them out of the region.
ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ πρὸς τῷ ὄρει ἀγέλη χοίρων μεγάλη βοσκομένη•
Now there was there near the mountain a herd of pigs—great—grazing. {strange word order}
καὶ παρεκάλεσαν αὐτὸν λέγοντες• πέμψον ἡμᾶς εἰς τοὺς χοίρους, ἵνα εἰς αὐτοὺς εἰσέλθωμεν.
and they exhorted him, saying, “Send us into the pigs in order that into them we might go.”
καὶ ἐπέτρεψεν αὐτοῖς.
And he allowed them.
καὶ ἐξελθόντα τὰ πνεύματα τὰ ἀκάθαρτα εἰσῆλθον εἰς τοὺς χοίρους,
And after coming out the unclean spirits went into the pigs.
καὶ ὥρμησεν ἡ ἀγέλη κατὰ τοῦ κρημνοῦ εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν, ὡς δισχίλιοι,
And the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake—about two thousand—
καὶ ἐπνίγοντο ἐν τῇ θαλάσσῃ.
and they were choking in the lake.
Καὶ οἱ βόσκοντες αὐτοὺς ἔφυγον καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ εἰς τοὺς ἀγρούς•
Those herding them escaped and reported in the city and in the farms.
καὶ ἦλθον
And they came
ἰδεῖν τί ἐστιν τὸ γεγονὸς
in order to see what it is that had happened.
καὶ ἔρχονται πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ θεωροῦσιν τὸν δαιμονιζόμενον
And they are coming to Jesus and observing the being-demon-oppressed man:
καθήμενον ἱματισμένον καὶ σωφρονοῦντα,
sitting, having clothed himself, being sane—
τὸν ἐσχηκότα τὸν λεγιῶνα,
the one who had had the legion— {}
καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν.
and they were afraid.
καὶ διηγήσαντο αὐτοῖς οἱ ἰδόντες πῶς ἐγένετο τῷ δαιμονιζομένῳ καὶ περὶ τῶν χοίρων.
And those who saw it recounted to them what happened to the being-demon-oppressed man and about the pigs.
καὶ ἤρξαντο παρακαλεῖν αὐτὸν ἀπελθεῖν ἀπὸ τῶν ὁρίων αὐτῶν.
And e they began to be exhorting him to go out from their borders.
Καὶ ἐμβαίνοντος αὐτοῦ εἰς τὸ πλοῖον
And while he is getting into the boat,
παρεκάλει αὐτὸν ὁ δαιμονισθεὶς
the having-been- demon-oppressed man is exhorting him
ἵνα μετʼ αὐτοῦ ᾖ.
in order that that he might be with him.
καὶ οὐκ ἀφῆκεν αὐτόν,
And he did not permit him
ἀλλὰ λέγει αὐτῷ• ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν οἶκόν σου πρὸς τοὺς σοὺς
but he is saying to him, “Go away to your home to your friends
καὶ ἀπάγγειλον αὐτοῖς ὅσα ὁ κύριός σοι πεποίηκεν καὶ ἠλέησέν σε.
and f tell them as much as the Lord has done for you, and that he had mercy on you.”
καὶ ἀπῆλθεν καὶ ἤρξατο κηρύσσειν ἐν τῇ Δεκαπόλει ὅσα ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς,
And he went out and began to be proclaiming in g the Decapolis as much as Jesus did for him,
καὶ πάντες ἐθαύμαζον.
and everyone would be astonished [impf.; Impressed? Disturbed?].

Καὶ διαπεράσαντος τοῦ Ἰησοῦ [ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ] πάλιν εἰς τὸ πέραν
And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side,
συνήχθη ὄχλος πολὺς ἐπʼ αὐτόν, καὶ ἦν παρὰ τὴν θάλασσαν.
a great crowd gathered to him, and he was beside the sea.
Καὶ ἔρχεται εἷς τῶν ἀρχισυναγώγων, ὀνόματι Ἰάϊρος,
h And one of i the rulers of the synagogue comes, named Jairus,
καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὸν πίπτει πρὸς τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ
and upon seeing him, he falls toward his feet
καὶ παρακαλεῖ αὐτὸν πολλὰ λέγων ὅτι τὸ θυγάτριόν μου ἐσχάτως ἔχει,
and he is earnestly exhorting him, saying, “My little girl is about to die.
ἵνα ἐλθὼν ἐπιθῇς τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῇ
Come and j lay your hands on her,
ἵνα σωθῇ καὶ ζήσῃ.
so that she may be saved and live.”
καὶ ἀπῆλθεν μετʼ αὐτοῦ.
And he went with him.
καὶ ἠκολούθει αὐτῷ ὄχλος πολὺς καὶ συνέθλιβον αὐτόν.
And a great crowd was following him and was k pressing about him.
Καὶ γυνὴ οὖσα ἐν ῥύσει αἵματος δώδεκα ἔτη
And there was a woman with a flow of blood for twelve years,
καὶ πολλὰ παθοῦσα ὑπὸ πολλῶν ἰατρῶν
who [because] she had suffered many things by many physicians,
καὶ δαπανήσασα τὰ παρʼ αὐτῆς πάντα
and had wasted everything that she had,
καὶ μηδὲν ὠφεληθεῖσα
and had gained nothing
ἀλλὰ μᾶλλον εἰς τὸ χεῖρον ἐλθοῦσα,
but rather grew came into worse,
ἀκούσασα περὶ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ,
So: [because] she heard about Jesus,
ἐλθοῦσα ἐν τῷ ὄχλῳ ὄπισθεν
after coming up behind him in the crowd,
ἥψατο τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ•
she touched his clothing.
ἔλεγεν γὰρ ὅτι ἐὰν ἅψωμαι κἂν τῶν ἱματίων αὐτοῦ
For she was saying, “If I might touch even his clothes,
σωθήσομαι.
I will be saved.”
καὶ εὐθὺς ἐξηράνθη ἡ πηγὴ τοῦ αἵματος αὐτῆς
m And immediately the fountain of her blood dried up,
καὶ ἔγνω τῷ σώματι ὅτι ἴαται ἀπὸ τῆς μάστιγος.
and she bodily recognized that she had been healed from her n torment.
καὶ εὐθὺς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐπιγνοὺς ἐν ἑαυτῷ τὴν ἐξ αὐτοῦ δύναμιν ἐξελθοῦσαν
And Jesus, [because he] immediately recognized in himself that o power-from-himself had gone out,
ἐπιστραφεὶς ἐν τῷ ὄχλῳ
after turning back in the crowd,
ἔλεγεν• τίς μου ἥψατο τῶν ἱματίων;
was saying, “Who touched my clothes?”
καὶ ἔλεγον αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ• βλέπεις τὸν ὄχλον συνθλίβοντά σε
And his disciples were saying to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you,
καὶ λέγεις• τίς μου ἥψατο;
and yet you are saying, ‘Who touched me?’”
καὶ περιεβλέπετο
And he was looking around
ἰδεῖν τὴν τοῦτο ποιήσασαν.
in order to see the one who did this.
ἡ δὲ γυνὴ φοβηθεῖσα καὶ τρέμουσα,
But the woman, by fear and continuous trembling
εἰδυῖα ὃ γέγονεν αὐτῇ,
because she was knowing what had happened to her,
ἦλθεν καὶ προσέπεσεν αὐτῷ
came and fell down before him
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ πᾶσαν τὴν ἀλήθειαν.
and told him the whole truth.
ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῇ• θυγάτηρ, ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέν σε•
But he said to her, “Daughter, p your trust has saved you;
ὕπαγε εἰς εἰρήνην
p go into peace,
καὶ ἴσθι ὑγιὴς ἀπὸ τῆς μάστιγός σου.
and be healthy from your torment.”
Ἔτι αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος ἔρχονται ἀπὸ τοῦ ἀρχισυναγώγου λέγοντες ὅτι ἡ θυγάτηρ σου ἀπέθανεν•
While he is still speaking, they are coming from the synagogue-ruler's, saying, “ Your daughter died .
τί ἔτι σκύλλεις τὸν διδάσκαλον;
Why still r keep bothering s the Teacher?”
ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς παρακούσας τὸν λόγον λαλούμενον
But because he ignored the message being spoken,
λέγει τῷ ἀρχισυναγώγῳ• μὴ φοβοῦ, μόνον πίστευε.
Jesus says to q the ruler of the synagogue, “Do not be fearing, only be trusting.”
καὶ οὐκ ἀφῆκεν οὐδένα μετʼ αὐτοῦ συνακολουθῆσαι εἰ μὴ τὸν Πέτρον καὶ Ἰάκωβον καὶ Ἰωάννην τὸν ἀδελφὸν Ἰακώβου.
And he allowed no one to follow him except t Peter and James and u John the brother of James.
καὶ ἔρχονται εἰς τὸν οἶκον τοῦ ἀρχισυναγώγου,
And they are coming into the house of the ruler of the synagogue,
καὶ θεωρεῖ θόρυβον καὶ κλαίοντας καὶ ἀλαλάζοντας πολλά,
and Jesus 1 is observing a commotion and weeping and great wailing.
καὶ εἰσελθὼν
And after he had come in,
λέγει αὐτοῖς• τί θορυβεῖσθε καὶ κλαίετε;
he says to them, v “Why are you making a commotion and weeping? [You should not be]
τὸ παιδίον οὐκ ἀπέθανεν ἀλλὰ καθεύδει.
The child did not die but is w sleeping.”
καὶ κατεγέλων αὐτοῦ.
And they were laughing at him.
αὐτὸς δὲ ἐκβαλὼν πάντας παραλαμβάνει τὸν πατέρα τοῦ παιδίου καὶ τὴν μητέρα καὶ τοὺς μετʼ αὐτοῦ
But he, after x casting them all out, takes the child’s father and mother and those who were with him
καὶ εἰσπορεύεται ὅπου ἦν τὸ παιδίον.
and he goes into where the child was.
καὶ κρατήσας τῆς χειρὸς τοῦ παιδίου
y And after grabbing the hand of the child,
λέγει αὐτῇ• ταλιθα κουμ, ὅ ἐστιν μεθερμηνευόμενον• τὸ κοράσιον, σοὶ λέγω, ἔγειρε.
he says to her, “Talitha cumi,” which is translated, “Sweetie, I am saying to you , z get up.”
καὶ εὐθὺς ἀνέστη τὸ κοράσιον καὶ περιεπάτει•
And immediately the sweetie got up and was walking
ἦν γὰρ ἐτῶν δώδεκα.
(for she was twelve years of age).
καὶ ἐξέστησαν [εὐθὺς] ἐκστάσει μεγάλῃ.
And they were immediately astonished with great astonishment.
καὶ διεστείλατο αὐτοῖς πολλὰ ἵνα μηδεὶς γνοῖ τοῦτο,
And a he strictly ordered them that no one might know this,
καὶ εἶπεν δοθῆναι αὐτῇ φαγεῖν.
and said to give her something to eat.

b He went away from there
καὶ ἔρχεται εἰς τὴν πατρίδα αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀκολουθοῦσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ.
and he comes into c his hometown, and his disciples are following him.
καὶ γενομένου σαββάτου ἤρξατο διδάσκειν ἐν τῇ συναγωγῇ,
And d on the Sabbath he began to be teaching in the synagogue,
καὶ πολλοὶ ἀκούοντες
and e many who were hearing [pres ptc]
ἐξεπλήσσοντο λέγοντες• πόθεν τούτῳ ταῦτα, καὶ τίς ἡ σοφία ἡ δοθεῖσα τούτῳ, καὶ αἱ δυνάμεις τοιαῦται διὰ τῶν χειρῶν αὐτοῦ γινόμεναι;
were being shocked [impf]] , saying, “Where did this man get these things from?" and "What is the wisdom given to this man?" and "Are powerful works such as these coming through his hands?" [=Jesus has gone too far? Jesus is too big for his britches?]
οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ τέκτων, ὁ υἱὸς τῆς Μαρίας καὶ ἀδελφὸς Ἰακώβου καὶ Ἰωσῆτος καὶ Ἰούδα καὶ Σίμωνος; καὶ οὐκ εἰσὶν αἱ ἀδελφαὶ αὐτοῦ ὧδε πρὸς ἡμᾶς;
f Isn't this man g the craftsman, the son of Mary and h brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And aren't his sisters here with us?” [Because Jesus is merely the craftsman...]
καὶ ἐσκανδαλίζοντο ἐν αὐτῷ.
And i they were being offended by him.
καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι οὐκ ἔστιν προφήτης ἄτιμος
And Jesus was saying to them, j “A prophet is not a despised man,
εἰ μὴ ἐν τῇ πατρίδι αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν τοῖς συγγενεῦσιν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐν τῇ οἰκίᾳ αὐτοῦ.
except in his hometown and among his relatives and in his house.”
καὶ οὐκ ἐδύνατο ἐκεῖ ποιῆσαι οὐδεμίαν δύναμιν,
And there k he was not being able to do any powerful work,
εἰ μὴ ὀλίγοις ἀρρώστοις ἐπιθεὶς τὰς χεῖρας ἐθεράπευσεν.
except that he healed a few sick people by laying-on hands.
καὶ ἐθαύμαζεν διὰ τὴν ἀπιστίαν αὐτῶν. *
And m he was being disturbed because of their unbelief.
Καὶ περιῆγεν τὰς κώμας κύκλῳ
n And he was going in a circle around the villages,
διδάσκων.
Καὶ προσκαλεῖται τοὺς δώδεκα
And he calls the twelve
καὶ ἤρξατο αὐτοὺς ἀποστέλλειν δύο δύο
and began to be sending them out two by two,
καὶ ἐδίδου αὐτοῖς ἐξουσίαν τῶν πνευμάτων τῶν ἀκαθάρτων,
and was giving them authority over the unclean spirits.
καὶ παρήγγειλεν αὐτοῖς ἵνα μηδὲν αἴρωσιν εἰς ὁδὸν
And he commanded them to be taking nothing on the road
εἰ μὴ ῥάβδον μόνον,
except a staff only—
μὴ ἄρτον, μὴ πήραν, μὴ εἰς τὴν ζώνην χαλκόν,
no bread, no bag, no small change in their belts—
ἀλλʼ ὑποδεδεμένους σανδάλια, καὶ μὴ ἐνδύσησθε δύο χιτῶνας.
but to p be having put on [pf] sandals — and to not put on two shirts. 1
καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς• ὅπου ἐὰν εἰσέλθητε εἰς οἰκίαν,
And he was saying to them, “Wherever you might go into a house,
ἐκεῖ μένετε ἕως ἂν ἐξέλθητε ἐκεῖθεν.
be staying there until you might go out from there.
καὶ ὃς ἂν τόπος μὴ δέξηται ὑμᾶς μηδὲ ἀκούσωσιν ὑμῶν, ἐκπορευόμενοι ἐκεῖθεν
And whichever place might neither receive nor hear you, when you are leaving,
ἐκτινάξατε τὸν χοῦν τὸν ὑποκάτω τῶν ποδῶν ὑμῶν εἰς μαρτύριον αὐτοῖς.
q shake off the dust that is under your feet r for a testimony to them.”
Καὶ ἐξελθόντες ἐκήρυξαν ἵνα μετανοῶσιν,
And after going out, they proclaimed u that people should repent.
καὶ δαιμόνια πολλὰ ἐξέβαλλον,
t And many demons they were casting out
καὶ ἤλειφον ἐλαίῳ πολλοὺς ἀρρώστους
and v were anointing with oil many who were sick
καὶ ἐθεράπευον.
and were healing.

w And "King" Herod heard,
φανερὸν γὰρ ἐγένετο τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ,
for his name became evident,
καὶ ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτίζων ἐγήγερται ἐκ νεκρῶν
and they were saying , x “John the Washing One has been raised from the corpses.
καὶ διὰ τοῦτο ἐνεργοῦσιν αἱ δυνάμεις ἐν αὐτῷ.
and because of this the power-miracles are working by him.”
ἄλλοι δὲ ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἠλίας ἐστίν•
x But others were saying , “He is Elijah!”
ἄλλοι δὲ ἔλεγον ὅτι προφήτης ὡς εἷς τῶν προφητῶν.
But others were saying , “A prophet!, like one of the prophets.”
ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ Ἡρῴδης ἔλεγεν• ὃν ἐγὼ ἀπεκεφάλισα Ἰωάννην,
But after he heard, Herod was saying , “The one whom * I* beheaded —John—
οὗτος ἠγέρθη.
This man was raised.”
Αὐτὸς γὰρ ὁ Ἡρῴδης ἀποστείλας ἐκράτησεν τὸν Ἰωάννην καὶ ἔδησεν αὐτὸν ἐν φυλακῇ
z For Herod himself, after sending, seized John and a bound him in prison
διὰ Ἡρῳδιάδα τὴν γυναῖκα Φιλίππου τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ,
because of Herodias, the wife of Philip his brother,
ὅτι αὐτὴν ἐγάμησεν•
since he had married her.
ἔλεγεν γὰρ ὁ Ἰωάννης τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ ὅτι οὐκ ἔξεστίν σοι ἔχειν τὴν γυναῖκα τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου.
z For John would say to Herod, b “It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your brother.”
ἡ δὲ Ἡρῳδιὰς ἐνεῖχεν αὐτῷ
So Herodias was having it in for him
καὶ ἤθελεν αὐτὸν ἀποκτεῖναι,
and was wanting to kill him.
καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο•
[Nevertheless,] she was not being able .
ὁ γὰρ Ἡρῴδης ἐφοβεῖτο τὸν Ἰωάννην,
for Herod c was fearing John,
εἰδὼς αὐτὸν ἄνδρα δίκαιον καὶ ἅγιον,
[because he] knew that he was a righteous and holy man,
καὶ συνετήρει αὐτόν,
and he was protecting him.
καὶ ἀκούσας αὐτοῦ πολλὰ ἠπόρει,
After he heard him, he would be perplexed greatly,
καὶ ἡδέως αὐτοῦ ἤκουεν.
and he would hear him gladly.

And when an opportune day came, e on his birthday,
δεῖπνον ἐποίησεν τοῖς μεγιστᾶσιν αὐτοῦ καὶ τοῖς χιλιάρχοις καὶ τοῖς πρώτοις τῆς Γαλιλαίας,
Herod f made a feast for his advisors and military leaders and the big-wigs of Galilee.
καὶ εἰσελθούσης τῆς θυγατρὸς αὐτοῦ Ἡρῳδιάδος καὶ ὀρχησαμένης
And after his daughter Herodias came in and danced,
ἤρεσεν τῷ Ἡρῴδῃ καὶ τοῖς συνανακειμένοις.
she pleased Herod and those who were dining with him.
εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τῷ κορασίῳ• αἴτησόν με ὃ ἐὰν θέλῃς, καὶ δώσω σοι•
And the king said to the little girl, “Ask me for whatever you want, and I will give it to you.”
καὶ ὤμοσεν αὐτῇ [πολλὰ] ὅ τι ἐάν με αἰτήσῃς δώσω σοι ἕως ἡμίσους τῆς βασιλείας μου.
And he swore to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, g up to half of my kingdom.”
καὶ ἐξελθοῦσα εἶπεν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς• τί αἰτήσωμαι;
And after she went out she said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?”
ἡ δὲ εἶπεν• τὴν κεφαλὴν Ἰωάννου τοῦ βαπτίζοντος.
And she said, “The head of John the Washing One.”
καὶ εἰσελθοῦσα εὐθὺς μετὰ σπουδῆς πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα
And after she came in immediately with eagerness to the king,
ᾐτήσατο λέγουσα• θέλω ἵνα ἐξαυτῆς δῷς μοι ἐπὶ πίνακι τὴν κεφαλὴν Ἰωάννου τοῦ βαπτιστοῦ.
she asked, saying, “I am wanting that— right away! —you give me, on a serving dish, the head of John the Washer.”
καὶ περίλυπος γενόμενος ὁ βασιλεὺς διὰ τοὺς ὅρκους καὶ τοὺς ἀνακειμένους
And even though the King became depressed on account of his oaths and those who were dining with him,
οὐκ ἠθέλησεν ἀθετῆσαι αὐτήν•
he did not want to reject her.
καὶ εὐθὺς ἀποστείλας
And immediately by sending,
ὁ βασιλεὺς σπεκουλάτορα ἐπέταξεν ἐνέγκαι τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ.
the king ordered an executioner to bring his head. [No name!]
καὶ ἀπελθὼν ἀπεκεφάλισεν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ φυλακῇ
After going away, he beheaded him in the prison
καὶ ἤνεγκεν τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πίνακι
and brought his head on a serving dish
καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν τῷ κορασίῳ,
and gave it to the little girl,
καὶ τὸ κοράσιον ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν τῇ μητρὶ αὐτῆς.
and the little girl [repetition] gave it to her mother.
καὶ ἀκούσαντες
And after hearing,
οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἦλθον καὶ ἦραν τὸ πτῶμα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔθηκαν αὐτὸ ἐν μνημείῳ.
his disciples came and took his corpse and laid it in a tomb.

Καὶ συνάγονται οἱ ἀπόστολοι πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἀπήγγειλαν αὐτῷ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησαν καὶ ὅσα ἐδίδαξαν.
i j And the apostles are gathering to Jesus and told him all the things they had done and the things taught.
καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς• δεῦτε ὑμεῖς αὐτοὶ κατʼ ἰδίαν εἰς ἔρημον τόπον καὶ ἀναπαύσασθε ὀλίγον.
And he says to them, “ You yourselves come away by yourselves to a desolate place and rest a bit.”
ἦσαν γὰρ οἱ ἐρχόμενοι καὶ οἱ ὑπάγοντες πολλοί,
For many were those coming and those going,
καὶ οὐδὲ φαγεῖν εὐκαίρουν.
[so that] k they wouldn't even have a chance to eat.
Καὶ ἀπῆλθον ἐν τῷ πλοίῳ εἰς ἔρημον τόπον κατʼ ἰδίαν.
l And even though they went away in m the boat to a desolate place by themselves.
καὶ εἶδον αὐτοὺς ὑπάγοντας καὶ ἐπέγνωσαν πολλοὶ καὶ πεζῇ ἀπὸ πασῶν τῶν πόλεων συνέδραμον ἐκεῖ καὶ προῆλθον αὐτούς.
Now many saw them going away and n recognized them, and they ran together there on foot from all the towns and went ahead of them.
Καὶ ἐξελθὼν εἶδεν πολὺν ὄχλον
When he came out he o saw a great crowd,
καὶ ἐσπλαγχνίσθη ἐπʼ αὐτούς,
and o he had compassion on them,
ὅτι ἦσαν ὡς πρόβατα μὴ ἔχοντα ποιμένα,
because they were like sheep not having a shepherd.
καὶ ἤρξατο διδάσκειν αὐτοὺς πολλά.
And he began to be teaching them many things.
Καὶ ἤδη ὥρας πολλῆς γενομένης προσελθόντες αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἔλεγον ὅτι ἔρημός ἐστιν ὁ τόπος καὶ ἤδη ὥρα πολλή•
And when it was already late, after his disciples came to him, they were saying , “The place is desolate, and the hour is already late.
ἀπόλυσον αὐτούς, ἵνα ἀπελθόντες εἰς τοὺς κύκλῳ ἀγροὺς καὶ κώμας
p Dismiss them, in order that, going into the surrounding countryside and villages,
ἀγοράσωσιν ἑαυτοῖς τί φάγωσιν.
they might buy themselves something they might be eating.”
ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν αὐτοῖς• δότε αὐτοῖς ὑμεῖς φαγεῖν.
But answering them, he said to them, q “ You give them something to be eating.”
καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῷ• ἀπελθόντες ἀγοράσωμεν δηναρίων διακοσίων ἄρτους καὶ δώσομεν αὐτοῖς φαγεῖν;
And r they are saying to him, s “After going, might we buy two hundred denarii 1 worth of bread and give it to them to be eating?”
ὁ δὲ λέγει αὐτοῖς• πόσους ἄρτους ἔχετε; ὑπάγετε ἴδετε.
But he is saying to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.”
καὶ γνόντες λέγουσιν• πέντε, καὶ δύο ἰχθύας.
And when they had found out, they are saying , t “Five, and two fish.”
καὶ ἐπέταξεν αὐτοῖς ἀνακλῖναι πάντας συμπόσια συμπόσια ἐπὶ τῷ χλωρῷ χόρτῳ.
Then he commanded them all to recline in dinner parties on the green grass.
καὶ ἀνέπεσαν πρασιαὶ πρασιαὶ κατὰ ἑκατὸν καὶ κατὰ πεντήκοντα.
So they laid back as garden beds, by hundreds and by fifties.
καὶ λαβὼν τοὺς πέντε ἄρτους καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν
And after taking the five loaves and the two fish, while looking up into heaven,
εὐλόγησεν καὶ κατέκλασεν τοὺς ἄρτους
he v blessed and broke the loaves
καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς [αὐτοῦ]
and was giving them to the disciples
ἵνα παρατιθῶσιν αὐτοῖς,
in order that they might set before them.
καὶ τοὺς δύο ἰχθύας ἐμέρισεν πᾶσιν.
And he divided the two fish among them all.
καὶ ἔφαγον πάντες καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν,
And they all ate and were full.
καὶ ἦραν κλάσματα δώδεκα κοφίνων πληρώματα καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν ἰχθύων.
And they took up pieces, twelve baskets' fullness, and of the fish.
καὶ ἦσαν οἱ φαγόντες [τοὺς ἄρτους] πεντακισχίλιοι ἄνδρες.
And those who ate the loaves were five thousand men.

w And immediately he x forced his disciples to get into y the boat and go ahead to the other side, z to Bethsaida,
ἕως αὐτὸς ἀπολύει τὸν ὄχλον.
while he is dismissing the crowd.
καὶ ἀποταξάμενος αὐτοῖς
And after he said goodbye to them,
ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὸ ὄρος
a he went up on the mountain
προσεύξασθαι.
in order to pray.
καὶ ὀψίας γενομένης ἦν τὸ πλοῖον ἐν μέσῳ τῆς θαλάσσης,
And when b evening came, the boat was in the middle of the lake,
καὶ αὐτὸς μόνος ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.
and he was alone on the land.
καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτοὺς βασανιζομένους ἐν τῷ ἐλαύνειν,
And because he saw them being tormented while rowing,
ἦν γὰρ ὁ ἄνεμος ἐναντίος αὐτοῖς,
for the wind was against them,
περὶ τετάρτην φυλακὴν τῆς νυκτὸς ἔρχεται πρὸς αὐτοὺς
about b the fourth watch of the night 1 he is coming to them
περιπατῶν ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης
in that he is walking on the sea.
καὶ ἤθελεν παρελθεῖν αὐτούς.
c And he meant to pass by them,
οἱ δὲ ἰδόντες αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τῆς θαλάσσης περιπατοῦντα
but because they saw him walking on the sea
ἔδοξαν ὅτι φάντασμά ἐστιν,
they thought he is a ghost,
καὶ ἀνέκραξαν•
and cried out,
πάντες γὰρ αὐτὸν εἶδον καὶ ἐταράχθησαν.
for they all saw him and d were troubled.
ὁ δὲ εὐθὺς ἐλάλησεν μετʼ αὐτῶν, καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς• θαρσεῖτε,
But immediately he spoke with them and he is saying to them, e “Be being courageous!,
ἐγώ εἰμι•
[because] " I am".
μὴ φοβεῖσθε.
[Therefore:] e Do not be fearing.”
καὶ ἀνέβη πρὸς αὐτοὺς εἰς τὸ πλοῖον
And he came up toward them into the boat,
καὶ ἐκόπασεν ὁ ἄνεμος,
and the wind ceased.
καὶ λίαν [ἐκ περισσοῦ] ἐν ἑαυτοῖς ἐξίσταντο•
And they were being exceedingly excessively astounded ,
οὐ γὰρ συνῆκαν ἐπὶ τοῖς ἄρτοις,
for f they did not comprehend the loaves,
ἀλλʼ ἦν αὐτῶν ἡ καρδία πεπωρωμένη.
but their heart g had been hardened [plup. periph.].
Καὶ διαπεράσαντες ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἦλθον εἰς Γεννησαρὲτ καὶ προσωρμίσθησαν.
h When they had crossed over, they came to land at i Gennesaret and they anchored.
καὶ ἐξελθόντων αὐτῶν ἐκ τοῦ πλοίου εὐθὺς ἐπιγνόντες αὐτὸν
And when they got out of the boat, immediately they j recognized him
περιέδραμον ὅλην τὴν χώραν ἐκείνην καὶ ἤρξαντο ἐπὶ τοῖς κραβάττοις τοὺς κακῶς ἔχοντας περιφέρειν ὅπου ἤκουον ὅτι ἐστίν.
and ran about that whole region and began the bed-ridden and the sick to be bringing wherever they were hearing that "he is".
καὶ ὅπου ἂν εἰσεπορεύετο εἰς κώμας ἢ εἰς πόλεις ἢ εἰς ἀγρούς,
And wherever he would come, in villages, cities, or countryside,
ἐν ταῖς ἀγοραῖς ἐτίθεσαν τοὺς ἀσθενοῦντας καὶ παρεκάλουν αὐτὸν
m they laid the sick in the marketplaces and were encouraging him
ἵνα κἂν τοῦ κρασπέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ ἅψωνται•
that they might touch even n the tassels of his garment.
καὶ ὅσοι ἂν ἥψαντο αὐτοῦ ἐσῴζοντο.
And o as many as touched it were being saved.

Καὶ συνάγονται πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καί τινες τῶν γραμματέων ἐλθόντες ἀπὸ Ἱεροσολύμων.
p And the Pharisees are being gathered to him, with some of the scribes q who had come from Jerusalem,
καὶ ἰδόντες τινὰς τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ ὅτι κοιναῖς χερσίν, τοῦτʼ ἔστιν ἀνίπτοις, ἐσθίουσιν τοὺς ἄρτους
and they are seeing some of his disciples, that with common hands that were r defiled, that is, unwashed, they are eating meals.
- οἱ γὰρ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ πάντες οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἐὰν μὴ πυγμῇ νίψωνται τὰς χεῖρας οὐκ ἐσθίουσιν,
(For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands with a fist,
κρατοῦντες τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων,
[because they are] holding to s the tradition of t the elders,
καὶ ἀπʼ ἀγορᾶς ἐὰν μὴ βαπτίσωνται οὐκ ἐσθίουσιν,
and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. 1
καὶ ἄλλα πολλά ἐστιν ἃ παρέλαβον κρατεῖν,
And there are many other things that they received in order to hold,
βαπτισμοὺς ποτηρίων καὶ ξεστῶν καὶ χαλκίων [καὶ κλινῶν] -
such as u the washing of v cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches. 2 )
καὶ ἐπερωτῶσιν αὐτὸν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς• διὰ τί οὐ περιπατοῦσιν οἱ μαθηταί σου κατὰ τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν πρεσβυτέρων,
And the Pharisees and the scribes are asking him, “Why are your disciples not walking according to s the tradition of t the elders,
ἀλλὰ κοιναῖς χερσὶν ἐσθίουσιν τὸν ἄρτον;
w but are eating bread with r common hands?”
Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς• καλῶς ἐπροφήτευσεν Ἠσαΐας περὶ ὑμῶν τῶν ὑποκριτῶν,
But he said to them, “Isaiah prophesied well about you x posers,
ὡς γέγραπται [ὅτι] οὗτος ὁ λαὸς τοῖς χείλεσίν με τιμᾷ,
as it has been written, y “‘ This people is honoring me with the lips,
ἡ δὲ καρδία αὐτῶν πόρρω ἀπέχει ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ•
but their heart is being distantly far from me;
μάτην δὲ σέβονταί με
and they are pointlessly worshipping me,
διδάσκοντες διδασκαλίας ἐντάλματα ἀνθρώπων.
teaching instructions to be the commandments of men.’
ἀφέντες τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ θεοῦ
By leaving the commandment of God,
κρατεῖτε τὴν παράδοσιν τῶν ἀνθρώπων.
you are holding to the tradition of men.”
καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς• καλῶς ἀθετεῖτε τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ θεοῦ,
And he was saying to them, “You are rejecting well the commandment of God
ἵνα τὴν παράδοσιν ὑμῶν στήσητε.
in order that you might establish your tradition!
Μωϋσῆς γὰρ εἶπεν• τίμα τὸν πατέρα σου καὶ τὴν μητέρα σου, καί• ὁ κακολογῶν πατέρα ἢ μητέρα θανάτῳ τελευτάτω.
For Moses said, b ‘Be honoring your father and your mother’; and, c ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’
ὑμεῖς δὲ λέγετε• ἐὰν εἴπῃ ἄνθρωπος τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί• κορβᾶν, ὅ ἐστιν δῶρον, ὃ ἐὰν ἐξ ἐμοῦ ὠφεληθῇς,
But you are saying, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have benefited from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God) 1 —
οὐκέτι ἀφίετε αὐτὸν οὐδὲν ποιῆσαι τῷ πατρὶ ἢ τῇ μητρί,
then you no longer leave him to do anything for his father or mother,
ἀκυροῦντες τὸν λόγον τοῦ θεοῦ τῇ παραδόσει ὑμῶν ᾗ παρεδώκατε•
voiding the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down.
καὶ παρόμοια τοιαῦτα πολλὰ ποιεῖτε.
And you are doing many similar things.”
Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος πάλιν τὸν ὄχλον ἔλεγεν αὐτοῖς• ἀκούσατέ μου πάντες καὶ σύνετε. οὐδέν ἐστιν ἔξωθεν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς αὐτὸν ὃ δύναται κοινῶσαι αὐτόν,
And he called the crowd to him again and was saying to them, e “Hear me, all of you, and understand: f There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can make him common,
ἀλλὰ τὰ ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκπορευόμενά ἐστιν τὰ κοινοῦντα τὸν ἄνθρωπον.
but the things that come out of a person are the things that make the person common.” 1
Καὶ ὅτε εἰσῆλθεν εἰς οἶκον ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου, ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ τὴν παραβολήν.
And when he had entered g the house from the crowd, h his disciples asked him about the parable.
καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς• οὕτως καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀσύνετοί ἐστε;
And he says to them, “Are you also similarly foolish ones?
οὐ νοεῖτε ὅτι πᾶν τὸ ἔξωθεν
Aren't you understanding that every outside thing is not able to defile the person,
εἰσπορευόμενον εἰς τὸν ἄνθρωπον οὐ δύναται αὐτὸν κοινῶσαι
by going into him,
ὅτι οὐκ εἰσπορεύεται αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν καρδίαν
since it is entering not his heart
ἀλλʼ εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν,
j but his stomach,
καὶ εἰς τὸν ἀφεδρῶνα ἐκπορεύεται,
and comes out into the toilet?” 1
καθαρίζων πάντα τὰ βρώματα;
( k Cleansing all foods.)
ἔλεγεν δὲ ὅτι τὸ ἐκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐκπορευόμενον,
But he was saying , l “What is coming out of a person —
ἐκεῖνο κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον.
that thing is defiling him!
ἔσωθεν γὰρ ἐκ τῆς καρδίας τῶν ἀνθρώπων οἱ διαλογισμοὶ οἱ κακοὶ ἐκπορεύονται, πορνεῖαι, κλοπαί, φόνοι, μοιχεῖαι, πλεονεξίαι, πονηρίαι, δόλος, ἀσέλγεια, ὀφθαλμὸς πονηρός, βλασφημία, ὑπερηφανία, ἀφροσύνη•
For from within, out of the heart of people, bad/evil reasonings are coming: sexual immoralities, thefts, m murders, adulteries, greedinesses, wickednesses, deceit, n sensuality, o envy, p slander, q arrogance, r foolishness.
πάντα ταῦτα τὰ πονηρὰ ἔσωθεν ἐκπορεύεται
s All these evil things are coming from within,
καὶ κοινοῖ τὸν ἄνθρωπον.
and they are defiling the person.”

And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. 1
Καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἰς οἰκίαν οὐδένα ἤθελεν γνῶναι,
And entering a house, he was not wanting anyone to know,
καὶ οὐκ ἠδυνήθη λαθεῖν•
yet he was not able to escape notice.
ἀλλʼ εὐθὺς ἀκούσασα γυνὴ περὶ αὐτοῦ,
But immediately [because] a woman heard about him
ἧς εἶχεν τὸ θυγάτριον αὐτῆς πνεῦμα ἀκάθαρτον,
[because she had a] little girl who had an unclean spirit
ἐλθοῦσα
[after coming]
προσέπεσεν πρὸς τοὺς πόδας αὐτοῦ•
fell down at his feet.
ἡ δὲ γυνὴ ἦν Ἑλληνίς, Συροφοινίκισσα τῷ γένει•
t Now the woman was a u Greek, v a Syrophoenician by birth.
καὶ ἠρώτα αὐτὸν ἵνα τὸ δαιμόνιον ἐκβάλῃ ἐκ τῆς θυγατρὸς αὐτῆς.
And she was [repeatedly] begging him to cast the demon out of her daughter.
καὶ ἔλεγεν αὐτῇ• ἄφες πρῶτον χορτασθῆναι τὰ τέκνα,
And he was saying to her, “Allow the children be w fed first,
οὐ γάρ ἐστιν καλὸν λαβεῖν τὸν ἄρτον τῶν τέκνων καὶ τοῖς κυναρίοις βαλεῖν.
for it is not good to take the children’s [τεκνον] bread and x cast it to the lap-dogs.”
ἡ δὲ ἀπεκρίθη καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ• κύριε• καὶ τὰ κυνάρια ὑποκάτω τῆς τραπέζης ἐσθίουσιν ἀπὸ τῶν ψιχίων τῶν παιδίων.
But she answered and says to him, “O Lord — even the lap-dogs under the table are eating the kids' [παιδια] y crumbs.”
καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ• διὰ τοῦτον τὸν λόγον
And he said to her, “Because of this word —
ὕπαγε,
be going away!;
ἐξελήλυθεν ἐκ τῆς θυγατρός σου τὸ δαιμόνιον.
the demon has left your daughter.”
καὶ ἀπελθοῦσα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτῆς εὗρεν τὸ παιδίον βεβλημένον ἐπὶ τὴν κλίνην καὶ τὸ δαιμόνιον ἐξεληλυθός.
And going away to her house, she found the kid having-been thrown onto the bed and the demon having gone.
Καὶ πάλιν ἐξελθὼν ἐκ τῶν ὁρίων Τύρου ἦλθεν διὰ Σιδῶνος εἰς τὴν θάλασσαν τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν ὁρίων Δεκαπόλεως.
a And again he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to b the Sea of Galilee, in the middle of the region of the c Decapolis.
Καὶ φέρουσιν αὐτῷ κωφὸν καὶ μογιλάλον
And they are bringing to him d a man who was deaf and d had a speech impediment,
καὶ παρακαλοῦσιν αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπιθῇ αὐτῷ τὴν χεῖρα.
and they are begging him to e lay 'the hand' on him.
καὶ ἀπολαβόμενος αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τοῦ ὄχλου κατʼ ἰδίαν
And f taking him away from the crowd by himself,
ἔβαλεν τοὺς δακτύλους αὐτοῦ εἰς τὰ ὦτα αὐτοῦ
he threw his fingers into his ears,
καὶ πτύσας
and f after spitting
ἥψατο τῆς γλώσσης αὐτοῦ,
touched his tongue.
καὶ ἀναβλέψας εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν ἐστέναξεν καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ• εφφαθα, ὅ ἐστιν διανοίχθητι.
And g looking up to heaven, h he groaned and says to him, “Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!”
καὶ [εὐθέως] ἠνοίγησαν αὐτοῦ αἱ ἀκοαί,
d And his [hearing-]ears were opened,
καὶ ἐλύθη ὁ δεσμὸς τῆς γλώσσης αὐτοῦ
the chain of his tongue was loosed,
καὶ ἐλάλει ὀρθῶς.
and he was speaking correctly.
καὶ διεστείλατο αὐτοῖς ἵνα μηδενὶ λέγωσιν•
And i Jesus 1 charged them to be telling no one.
ὅσον δὲ αὐτοῖς διεστέλλετο, αὐτοὶ μᾶλλον περισσότερον ἐκήρυσσον.
But j the more he charged them, the more abundantly they preached it.
καὶ ὑπερπερισσῶς ἐξεπλήσσοντο λέγοντες• καλῶς πάντα πεποίηκεν,
And they were exceedingly k astonished, saying, “He has done all things well.
καὶ τοὺς κωφοὺς ποιεῖ ἀκούειν καὶ [τοὺς] ἀλάλους λαλεῖν.
He even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”
Ἐν ἐκείναις ταῖς ἡμέραις πάλιν πολλοῦ ὄχλου ὄντος καὶ μὴ ἐχόντων τί φάγωσιν,
l In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat,
προσκαλεσάμενος τοὺς μαθητὰς λέγει αὐτοῖς• σπλαγχνίζομαι ἐπὶ τὸν ὄχλον,
summoning his disciples to him he says to them, m “I have pity on the crowd,
ὅτι ἤδη ἡμέραι τρεῖς προσμένουσίν μοι καὶ οὐκ ἔχουσιν τί φάγωσιν•
because they have remained with me now three days and are having nothing to eat.
καὶ ἐὰν ἀπολύσω αὐτοὺς νήστεις εἰς οἶκον αὐτῶν, ἐκλυθήσονται ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ• καί τινες αὐτῶν ἀπὸ μακρόθεν ἥκασιν.
And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will become weary on the way. And some of them have come from far away.”
καὶ ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι πόθεν τούτους δυνήσεταί τις ὧδε χορτάσαι ἄρτων ἐπʼ ἐρημίας;
And his disciples answered him, “How can one feed these people with bread here at the wilderness?”
καὶ ἠρώτα αὐτούς• πόσους ἔχετε ἄρτους; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν• ἑπτά.
And he was asking them, “How many loaves are you having?” They said, n “Seven.”
καὶ παραγγέλλει τῷ ὄχλῳ ἀναπεσεῖν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς•
And he is commanding the crowd to sit down on the ground.
καὶ λαβὼν τοὺς ἑπτὰ ἄρτους εὐχαριστήσας
And after taking the seven loaves, and o after giving thanks,
ἔκλασεν καὶ ἐδίδου τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ
he broke and gave to his disciples
ἵνα παρατιθῶσιν,
in order that they might set before the people;
καὶ παρέθηκαν τῷ ὄχλῳ.
and they set before the crowd.
καὶ εἶχον ἰχθύδια ὀλίγα•
And they had a few little fish.
καὶ εὐλογήσας αὐτὰ
And after p blessing them,
εἶπεν καὶ ταῦτα παρατιθέναι.
he said that these also should be set before.
καὶ ἔφαγον καὶ ἐχορτάσθησαν,
And q they ate and were satisfied.
καὶ ἦραν περισσεύματα κλασμάτων ἑπτὰ σπυρίδας.
And they took up the broken pieces left over, n seven baskets full.
ἦσαν δὲ ὡς τετρακισχίλιοι. καὶ ἀπέλυσεν αὐτούς.
And there were about four thousand people. And he sent them away.
Καὶ εὐθὺς ἐμβὰς εἰς τὸ πλοῖον μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ
