Main point summary
If you do not control your tongue, your religion is not pure and undefiled - it is not true religion before God. Before God, pure and undefiled religion is 1) actively caring for those who do not have care, and 2) keeping yourself holy (being devoted to God) - from the world's way of living.

speaking indicates something true about your heart - "out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks." This is really an indication of the heart. So, the heart is the issue of "religion."
Religion (living in Christ, in communion with Him, in conformity to His Word) is before God. It is not separate from God or out of His sight, but has to do with His work and His purposes and commands.
Living contrary to Christ and thinking you are Christ's is affecting your own heart. It is deceiving you - probably in the sense that you think you are Christ's and feel falsely secure (cf. 1 John).
Clearly, we are to bridle our tongue.
You ought not feel secure if your mouth reveals a heart that is not subject to Christ. If there is not self-control, no conviction, then there ought to be concern. (Remember to examine whether or not you are alive by contrasting yourself to a dead person (Eph. 2).)

1 John). Religion is really an issue of your heart - which is indicated by your mouth and other external, observable things. There are certain things that indicate we are Christ's: when we love other's in ways they need and cannot repay (sacrificially) and when we (negatively) keep ourselves from sin, (positively) living a life devoted to God.
