1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
esv
mine
Now concerning w the times and the seasons, brothers, 1
Brethren, if you think of future days, months and years,
x you have no need to have anything written to you.
There is nothing to be gained by you, even if we put down our thoughts in a letter and send it to you.
For you yourselves are fully aware
Because , we have already told you what will happen upon the Lord’s return, and so you already know everything about it.
that y the day of the Lord will come
That when The Lord returns
like a thief in the night.
Into our world, coming unexpectedly like a robber suddenly appearing out of the darkness.
While people are saying, “There is peace and security,”
Meanwhile people will be going about their daily lives, confident that they are safe and well,
then z sudden destruction will come upon them
Instead in a heartbeat, their lives will forever be shattered
a as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman,
Just as a woman who is close to giving birth is suddenly impacted by painful labour pains,
and they will not escape.
And there is no hiding place, no safe refuge.
But you b are not in darkness, brothers ,
However my brethren, you do not live in the dark,
for that day to surprise you like a thief.
Which means that the coming of the day of The Lord will not startle you at the Lord’s appearing, as a robber would startle you at night.
For you are all c children 1 of light, children of the day.
Because every one of you is a son or a daughter of the Light,
We are not of the night or of the darkness.
We are God’s sons and daughters who do not belong to the night or the darkness of the evil one.
So then d let us not sleep, as others do,
Therefore , do not slumber throughout your lives, for that is what unbelievers do,
but let us e keep awake and f be sober.
Rather remain vigilant, keep alert, with your minds not dulled through excessive drinking or worldly living.
For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, g are drunk at night.
Because night is the time that people sleep, and it is at night when people get intoxicated.
But since we belong to the day,
However, because we are children of the Light, children of God,
let us be sober, h having put on the breastplate of i faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
Remain vigilant, stand firm, having dressed yourselves with the armour of God, the breastplate of righteousness, and the helmet of your deliverance, living your lives demonstrating your hope of salvation in faith and love.
For God has not destined us for j wrath,
Because my brethren, we are not condemned to face the fury of God’s judgement,
but k to obtain salvation
Rather we are sealed to receive deliverance from God’s wrath
through our Lord Jesus Christ, l who died for us
By the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave His life to save ours
so that whether we are awake
Meaning that even if we are going about our daily business
or asleep we might live with him.
Or lying in our beds at night, we have His life in us and we are going to spend eternity with Him.
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up,
So in light of this wonderful fact do not get downhearted or depressed but rather motivate and exhort one another to continue in your walk of faith,
just as you are doing.
In the same way you are encouraging each other right now.

Main Point(s) - colour code RED Primary Support - colour code GREEN Secondary Support - colour code YELLOW COMMANDS Do not sleep as others do (5.6a) Keep awake and be sober (5.6, 8b) MEANS The Bible tells us all we need to know about God's eternal plan. (5.2a)11 We are children of God and the Holy Sprit is our guide and leads us into all truth (John 16.13) Putting on the breastplate of faith and love. (5.8b) Wearing a helmet of the hope of salvation. (5.8b) Encouraging one another (5.11b) Building up one another (5.11b) MOTIVATION Knowing that Lord is coming back for us (5.2b) We are saved through the Lord's sacrifice (5.9c) We are children of God and live to serve Him in the light (5.5a) We are a chosen race a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession (1Peter 2.9) ANCHORS The Lord is coming back to the earth (5.2b) There is a judgement for those who reject God at the return of the Lord (5.3b) We are not destined for God’s wrath (5.9a) (1Th 1.9-10) We will be with the Lord forever when he comes to establish His kingdom (5.10c) Notes I cannot help but be greatly impressed by the Thessalonian believers when studying 1 Thessalonians. The word “know” is mentioned 7 times in connection with things Paul says they know about. In this passage Paul tells them that they are fully aware about, times and seasons and the coming of The Lord. This was a new group of believers, yet they knew how to live a life that was pleasing to God. How many people who are in church pews today would know from memory what Paul writes about? More to the point do I know what they knew? Using the Paraphrasing course I have discovered the following . I have NEVER spent so much time and effort on each paragraph of scripture throughout the course! I have NEVER got so much out of the study and meditation required to complete each assignment. I have NEVER understood, or got close to understanding the love that Paul, Silvanus and Timothy had for the Thessalonian church, prior to doing this paraphrasing course. I have NEVER enjoyed my bible study as much as I did throughout this course and the Paraphrase course that I completed before this course. My lack of knowledge of English grammar was no hindrance to me completing the Paraphrasing course. My deep appreciation of Michael Lane and Bret Karding who each motivated and encouraged me throughout the paraphrasing and Phrasing courses. Next Steps In 2014 I started to administer the ‘Look at the Book’ group (following Dr Piper’s Look at the Book videos) in Biblearc. Posting weekly requests for people to offer their work to the LAB group. In 2017 I stopped posting these requests, as support had dwindled from a max of 9 people down to one and eventually fizzled out. So it has been over two years since I posted LAB post requests, but having competed the Phrasing and Paraphrasing courses I am inclined to try again. I think their could be great benefit if a number of people using Biblearc each complete a project using the same paragraph of scripture and use the same bible version. Individuals can then compare and contrast their work with other users. It would be especially beneficial if people with Biblearc proficiency badges also took part so that beginners in using the tools and techniques in Biblearc might learn from their work. I used to ask for posts on a weekly basis, to keep up with the pace set by Dr Piper’s LAB posts. That was a mistake and I would base my post requests on maybe 2 to 3 week cycles Rather than calling for projects connected to each of Dr Piper’s Look at the Book posts, I have selected the book of Philippians and then select paragraphs where Dr Piper has completed his LAB’s, in this book. A link to Dr Pipers LAB website would be shown in each LAB request so that people can view all the LAB’s that Dr Piper has created for each paragraph.
