Spiritual gifts without love are missing the point. They are meant to be for the edification of the church, so when they are without love they are being used improperly. Structurally, it seems best to divide it into 13:1-3 and 13:4-7. The first division has three conditional clauses with a progression of thought; each asking the question " If I do 'x' without love," and then responding - I am a noisy gong, I am nothing, I gain nothing. The second division then shows explicitly what the love which Paul talks about looks like; and what it doesn't look like.
