2 Peter 3:1-7

The Day of the Lord Will Come 3 1 This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them g I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder, 2 h that you should remember the predictions of i the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles, 3 knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come j in the last days with scoffing, k following their own sinful desires. 4 l They will say, “Where is the promise of m his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.” 5 For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth n was formed out of water and through water o by the word of God, 6 and that by means of these the world that then existed p was deluged with water and q perished. 7 But by the same word r the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and s destruction of the ungodly.

Do not forget! The Lord always works through his Word Intro Examples of someone well experienced and in the know arriving at a scene, fully expecting what they see. We are not to worry at the widespread scoffing at the word of God, it is exactly what the apostles and prophets foretold. 3.1 purpose of both letters Remember the word of the Lord, beloved (3.1-2) v1 pure reason, purity of thought. That's what he's aiming at. v2 again, REMEMBER 'beloved' Why we keep the Word central at GCG, and how we do that. People will deliberately ignore the Word of God (3.3-7) First of all/'Above all' - he's about to say something extremely important. v3 in the last days, i.e., now - cf Biblical theology category of 'last days'. See Pentecost: we're in the last days; between ascension and Jesus' return. Nothing left to happen. v4 look up all those ESV cross references! Doubting the promise of God, growing weary with it, is always the theme of scoffers! v4 the scoffing happens among Christians too, functionally. I.e., we should get hot and bothered about politics, since actually Jesus isn't coming back. Or, most ironically, get preoccupied with eschatology, and not actually the hope of seeing Jesus and being with him forever. Jude 18 , mocking a mark of these last days. Also 2 Timothy 3 . v5 'deliberately' overlook: The Word of God that created, destroyed (flood), and now stores up for destruction again and again: the Word of God, supreme, sovereign, terrible, patient, merciful. v6 by means of these - ie water and the word of God. God's word governed creation, and the flood too. And it will govern the day of judgement and destruction. The flood is the forerunner of the final destruction. Note the contrast: the scoffers deliberately forget. But the church must not forget! False teachers reject the word of God, but through all history God works through his word. God rules through his word; where his promises are believed, he reigns. The turkey fallacy. Things will continue as always...that means no return of Jesus...and therefore no judgement...therefore we can live however we want. God's glory : his word definitely comes about! He works by his word, in creation. FCF : Doubting his word. Outright, or in practice. H1 . Mocking and scoffing. Drifting and deliberately forgetting. H2 . Living as though the day of judgement is not actually as real as the creation or flood. Arguments against God's word are motivated by a desire to justify or legitimise certain behaviours. cf at the present, the desire to disobey and dishonour government. Ways of silencing or editing out bits of the Bible. Jesus : he is the true Word, self-expression of the Father. The one through whom the Father made and then destroyed the world, and the one through whom the Father will judge. So now of course we must know and believe in the certain Word! He has come in flesh. He preaches this same message. People will continue as if nothing is happening, until the day comes. Work of Jesus : the Word of God was extinguished for us in judgement, in his death on the Cross. Union with Jesus : The day of judgement has passed for those in Jesus, we have already passed into the new life. In him I receive God's word as what it is; life and light. Invitation . Come and keep this in mind: Jesus is coming back to take us with him forever in a new creation. Live a life remembering God's word! Confrontation . Stop deliberately forgetting! Consolation . Keep hoping and living faithfully! "Those who wait for me will not be disappointed!" Wrap up: "Those who wait for me will not be disappointed!"
