8 Remember Jesus Christ, h risen from the dead, the i offspring of David, j as preached in my gospel, 9 k for which I am suffering, l bound with chains as a criminal. But m the word of God is not bound! 10 Therefore n I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain o the salvation that is in Christ Jesus with p eternal glory. 11 The saying is q trustworthy, for: r If we have died with him, we will also s live with him; 12 t if we endure, we will also reign with him; u if we deny him, he also will deny us; 13 v if we are faithless, w he remains faithful— for x he cannot deny himself.

Notes
Follow Jesus through suffering and into glory Intro : 'Remember' - note the context. Share in suffering. Be strengthened. Note sustained theme of suffering and endurance; v9, v10, v11, v12. 1. Remember Jesus Christ (v8-9) We need to be reminded! Risen from the dead - i.e., the suffering lead surely to unending glory. Offspring of David. This happened to the very Christ, so it is surely the way. 'My gospel' - not just that Paul preaches this, but embodies it through his own self-giving and suffering. 2. The Word of God is not bound! (v10-13) Therefore endure everything for the sake of the elect. For the sake of the elect; he doesn't necessarily know them. People from tribes and languages 2,000 years later are being blessed by Paul! And by Job. And by Athanasius, Tom Carson, etc. The saying is trustworthy. Die/live; endure/reign; deny/deny; faithless/faithful. Since he cannot deny himself. The saying is trustworthy. Build your life on this. God's glory . He is faithful. He raised Jesus. He freely gives salvation in Jesus with eternal glory. His word is not bound! FCF . We are ashamed of the gospel and deny/disown our Lord. H1. Outright denial and walking away (cf Peter's denial). H2. Functional denial (cf everyone else at the arrest of Jesus). Person of Jesus . He endured, he is faithful. He is the offspring of David; the true King. The Christ himself suffered and entered glory. Work of Jesus . He suffered and is risen from the dead. Union with Jesus . If we die with him, we will live with him. Invitation . Come, take up your cross today in real-world, real-time. Remember Jesus Christ! Confrontation . If we deny him, he will deny us (cf other examples of 'deny' in the NT). He remains faithful to himself - we cannot conveniently assume that he will change his mind about those who deny him. Consolation . If we endure, we will also reign with him. What a glorious thought; one which we don't often keep in mind. But it is clear that the Son of Man shares his throne with his saints (e.g., Revelation 3.21, also Daniel 7.27). Know that the LORD is using our endurance in his wise providence to bless, save, and encourage his people - perhaps people hundreds of years from now. Wrap up: Follow Jesus through suffering and into glory. Remember Jesus Christ. Remember that the Word of God is not bound, and he will remain faithful.
