Personal Instructions 9 d Do your best to come to me soon. 10 For e Demas, f in love with g this present world, h has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, 1 i Titus to Dalmatia. 11 h Luke alone is with me. Get j Mark and bring him with you, for he is very useful to me for ministry. 12 k Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. 13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments. 14 l Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; m the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. 15 Beware of him yourself, for he strongly opposed our message. 16 At my first defense no one came to stand by me, but all deserted me. n May it not be charged against them! 17 But o the Lord stood by me and p strengthened me, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and q all the Gentiles might hear it. So r I was rescued s from the lion’s mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. t To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen. Final Greetings 19 Greet u Prisca and Aquila, and v the household of Onesiphorus. 20 Erastus remained at Corinth, and I left w Trophimus, who was ill, at Miletus. 21 x Do your best to come before winter. Eubulus sends greetings to you, as do Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brothers. 1 22 The Lord be y with your spirit. z Grace be with you. 1

Outline
The Lord will bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom Intro . How can we face up to the future? With confidence in the Lord. Come to me soon, repeated. 1. The Lord strengthened me (v9-18) Demas' desertion - the discouragement News about people and ministry Cloak and parchments Terrible opposition from Alexander Discouragement of desertion Power from the Lord to endure trial - the Spirit of power, not fear. 'S trengthened' - power again to endure. Confidence and bright hope for the future God's glory . He strengthens and rescues his people. Even in death, his grace of endurance gives way (for some) to the grace of martyrdom. Either way is a strengthening and rescue. FCF . Loving this 'present world' (aeon). Disordered love. H1. This life is all there is, so enjoy it. Look out for self and tribe. Despair when you lose something you want. Envy others. H2. Saying you follow Jesus but showing through your choices that when hardship comes you want ease. Like the thorns in the parable of the sower. Person of Jesus . He strengthens and rescues his people. He himself shows sincere love for God and his people more than the pleasures of this passing age. He was deserted by his own when the trial came. And he himself forgave those who abandoned him. Work of Jesus . He put this present age to death in his death. In his resurrection, he has guaranteed that we will be carried safely into his heavenly kingdom. Union with Jesus . If we have died with him, we will live with him. Let us no longer love this present age, since we have died to it and it has been defeated. If we are in him, we can be confident of his power for all trials, even if they end in martyrdom; the power to endure to the very end and be carried safely into his Kingdom. Invitation . Trust that the Lord will strengthen you for all the seasons to come. Confrontation . Stop loving this present world. Consolation . The LORD stands by you to strengthen you. 2. Grace be with you all (v19-22) Sending greetings and welcome Christian love in the particular, not the abstract: someone with a name You plural. Grace be with you. Wrap up . How can we face up to the future? With confidence in the Lord.
