By God's grace, be at peace Introduction What is peace and where does it come from? Returning to a 'centre' [eg a pond returning to calm after ripples] God's church is a community of peace, made by a God of peace. The different ways we act and react are all to promote peace. Backdrop of 'shalom'. 1. Appreciate church leadership, and you'll promote love and peace (v12-13) v12 respect those who labour v12 in the Lord v12 admonish v13 esteem highly in love 'because' of their work v13 be at peace among yourselves 2. Act towards one another in ways that promote peace (v14-22) v14 admonish the idle v14 encourage the fainthearted v14 help the weak v14 be patient with them all v15 not evil for evil but do good v16 rejoice always v17 pray without ceasing v18 give thanks in all circumstances v19-21 do not quench the spirit or despise prophecies, but test everything v22 abstain from every form of evil 3. God is the ultimate source of peace (v23-27) v23 May the God of peace v23 Sanctify you 'completely'; 'spirit, soul, body' v23 blameless at the parousia v24 He is faithful, he will do it v26 Holy kiss v28 grace be with you glory of God: God of peace, committed to the wholeness and peace of His people. FCF: We don't want peace or pursue it. We choose disrespect and dishonour; division; thoughtlessness in how to relate to different people; paying back evil rather than good. Lack of thanksgiving. Person of Jesus: prince of peace. Blessed are the peacemakers. Bringer of wholeness, in different ways and directions according to our need. Work of Jesus: suffers the disintegration of crucifixion and death. The whole one is broken. The blameless one is blamed. Union with Jesus: in him I am blameless; all of me - body, soul, spirit. And I know that we are a community of peace. So in him I have the reason and the resources to maintain and express this peace. Wrap-up What is peace and where does it come from?
