26 Ἐν δὲ τῷ μηνὶ τῷ ἕκτῳ ἀπεστάλη ὁ ἄγγελος Γαβριὴλ ἀπὸ τοῦ θεοῦ εἰς πόλιν τῆς Γαλιλαίας ᾗ ὄνομα Ναζαρὲθ 27 πρὸς παρθένον ἐμνηστευμένην ἀνδρὶ ᾧ ὄνομα Ἰωσὴφ ἐξ οἴκου Δαυὶδ καὶ τὸ ὄνομα τῆς παρθένου Μαριάμ. 28 καὶ εἰσελθὼν πρὸς αὐτὴν εἶπεν• χαῖρε, κεχαριτωμένη, ὁ κύριος μετὰ σοῦ. 29 ἡ δὲ ἐπὶ τῷ λόγῳ διεταράχθη καὶ διελογίζετο ποταπὸς εἴη ὁ ἀσπασμὸς οὗτος. 30 καὶ εἶπεν ὁ ἄγγελος αὐτῇ• μὴ φοβοῦ, Μαριάμ, εὗρες γὰρ χάριν παρὰ τῷ θεῷ. 31 καὶ ἰδοὺ συλλήμψῃ ἐν γαστρὶ καὶ τέξῃ υἱὸν καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ἰησοῦν. 32 οὗτος ἔσται μέγας καὶ υἱὸς ὑψίστου κληθήσεται καὶ δώσει αὐτῷ κύριος ὁ θεὸς τὸν θρόνον Δαυὶδ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ, 33 καὶ βασιλεύσει ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον Ἰακὼβ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας καὶ τῆς βασιλείας αὐτοῦ οὐκ ἔσται τέλος. 34 εἶπεν δὲ Μαριὰμ πρὸς τὸν ἄγγελον• πῶς ἔσται τοῦτο, ἐπεὶ ἄνδρα οὐ γινώσκω; 35 καὶ ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ ἄγγελος εἶπεν αὐτῇ• πνεῦμα ἅγιον ἐπελεύσεται ἐπὶ σὲ καὶ δύναμις ὑψίστου ἐπισκιάσει σοι• διὸ καὶ τὸ γεννώμενον ἅγιον κληθήσεται υἱὸς θεοῦ. 36 καὶ ἰδοὺ Ἐλισάβετ ἡ συγγενίς σου καὶ αὐτὴ συνείληφεν υἱὸν ἐν γήρει αὐτῆς καὶ οὗτος μὴν ἕκτος ἐστὶν αὐτῇ τῇ καλουμένῃ στείρᾳ• 37 ὅτι οὐκ ἀδυνατήσει παρὰ τοῦ θεοῦ πᾶν ῥῆμα. 38 εἶπεν δὲ Μαριάμ• ἰδοὺ ἡ δούλη κυρίου• γένοιτό μοι κατὰ τὸ ῥῆμά σου. καὶ ἀπῆλθεν ἀπʼ αὐτῆς ὁ ἄγγελος.

Birth of Jesus Foretold 26 In the sixth month the angel x Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named y Nazareth, 27 z to a virgin betrothed 1 to a man whose name was Joseph, a of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came to her and said, “Greetings, b O favored one, c the Lord is with you!” 1 29 But d she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be. 30 And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for e you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, f you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and g you shall call his name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of h the Most High. And the Lord God i will give to him the throne of j his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob k forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” 34 And Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” 1 35 And the angel answered her, l “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of h the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born 1 will be called m holy— n the Son of God. 36 And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her o who was called barren. 37 For p nothing will be impossible with God.” 38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant 1 of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And q the angel departed from her.

Jesus' Kingdom will Never End Intro : Taking God at his word, no matter how staggering or outrageous the promise sounds. Nothing will be impossible with God. Remember Jacob from our Genesis series? The 'house of Jacob' is receiving its eternal ruler. 1. Mary is going to be the mother of King Jesus (v26-33) Warrior angel Found favour - ie received grace. This is the sense of favoured one (v28); not immaculate conception. Call him Jesus. Meaning of Jesus. Christmas hope: He will be great Son of the Most High Throne of David house of Jacob no end to his kingdom 2. Baby Jesus will be the Son of God (v34-38) she's emphatic, I have not known a man. A 'virgin', not simply a 'maiden'. Why this matters. Holy Spirit come upon you Power of Most High 'overshadow' (envelop) you called the Son of God Elizabeth. Nothing impossible with God. v38 faith to receive the promise. God's glory . He himself undertakes to fulfil his promise to rescue, which was all his own idea in the first place. In his great kindness he gives a saviour from the outside. FCF . We won't believe that nothing is impossible for God. We don't believe Christmas is true. Or, we won't believe it to be true on its own full terms; that I'm saved to the uttermost by this newborn baby. That my sin does not hold him off, but draws him in compassion. Person of Jesus . Becomes human forever more. Cries, dirties his nappy. Falls over when learning to walk. Sweats blood in the garden as he willingly faces our suffering and penalty of sin. Work of Jesus . The incarnation means the atonement can happen. And so the full blessings received by the risen Jesus. Throne of David, rule over Jacob (Psalm 24). Union with Jesus. The house of Jacob - the undeservingly blessed people! I'm a part of it through faith in Jesus. I'm learning to have this faith: I am the lord's servant, let it be to me as he has promised. Mary is our example not because she was perfect and therefore received favour, but because she simply believed the favour being brought to her! I'm savouring a kingdom with no end. In Jesus I find favour and receive grace. Since he, through his incarnation, atonement, ascension has received blessing for all his generation. Wrap up : Taking God at his word, no matter how staggering or outrageous the promise sounds. Nothing will be impossible with God.
