The Birth of Jesus Christ 18 Now the birth of u Jesus Christ 1 took place in this way. v When his mother Mary had been betrothed 2 to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child w from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling x to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, y an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and z you shall call his name Jesus, a for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 b All this took place c to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: 23 d “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name e Immanuel” (which means, God f with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, 25 but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And g he called his name Jesus.
Sunday 19th December - 10.30am gathering Talk: Matthew 1.18-25 Jesus by name, Jesus by nature 'The LORD saves' Intro : The storyline of the Bible keeps promising two things: 1) that somehow God himself is going to put things right, and 2) there is a human figure who will somehow put things right. 1. Born of a virgin, really? Jesus can save because he was conceived of the Holy Spirit and he is 'God with us'. 2. Jesus, the Son of David. Jesus can save because he is the true King. Save us from what? Our sins. What this means. Readings : Isaiah 11.1-5 Isaiah 7.10-17 Luke 2.1-7 Luke 1.26-38
