Galatians 2:20 NA28 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. Galatians 2:20 ESV Who am I? Intro : If I am a Christian, a Jesus-follower, then who am I? Who are you? The identity question. Who am I? Not an easy question, because of the 'says who?' problem. And what if no one agrees with me about who I am? Dissonance and anxiety. What if I can't make up my mind? If I can't convincingly answer the question, then I'm papering over the deepest, biggest question of them all [analogy]. The most important Q you and need to get ironed out. Even a chameleon knows it's a chameleon. Identity (who I am) controls function (what I do). 1. I am someone who died I have been crucified with Christ ... I don't live anymore - I died in Christ at the cross. cf - If I don't know who I am, then I'll keep trying to fix or save myself - the human condition. The Bible answers the identity question for us: humans in the image of God. But who have gone our own way. Jesus is the 'true man' who came to suffer and take away our guilt, and restore us to God. Proof of us going our own way is that we compulsively try to save ourselves [cf they mock Jesus in his death, 'save yourself'] 2. I am someone living a new kind of life ... It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God ... Jesus lives in me; I live by faith in Jesus I am someone who is living a new kind of life; by faith in the Son of God. Confident in the Father's love; indwelt by the Spirit. Belonging to him together with his people. cf - If I don't know who I am, then I can't ever enjoy a new life. Forgiveness won't ever be possible, because you don't know who you're guilty and shamed before, and you don't know the Father's affirming, freeing word of love and forgiveness. 3. I am someone who is loved ... the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me ... Jesus loved me and gave himself for ME. For US and that includes ME. Not better than others, but forgiven. Loved. cf - If I don't know who I am, then I'll keep doubting God's existence or his love, or doubting that it applies to ME Identity controls function: I've died, so die: to sin, temptation and the old self. ' Repentance' - give up running my own life. Yield, relinquish. Die. I live, so live: to God, his Kingdom, his ways. ' Faith' - follow, trust, obey Jesus. Take him at his word. You don't need to have all your ducks in the row, but you do need to trust Jesus. Wrap-up: Jesus' person - he loves and gives Jesus' work - he gave himself and died Jesus' offer - he gives life
