Joseph’s Brothers Go to Egypt 42 1 When l Jacob learned that there was grain for sale in Egypt, he said to his sons, “Why do you look at one another?” 2 And he said, “Behold, I have heard that there is grain for sale in Egypt. Go down and buy grain for us there, that we may m live and not die.” 3 So ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain in Egypt. 4 But Jacob did not send Benjamin, n Joseph’s brother, with his brothers, for o he feared that harm might happen to him. 5 Thus the sons of Israel came to buy among the others who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan. 6 Now Joseph was governor p over the land. He was the one who sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph’s brothers came and q bowed themselves before him with their faces to the ground. 7 Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them, but he treated them like strangers and r spoke roughly to them. “Where do you come from?” he said. They said, “From the land of Canaan, to buy food.” 8 And Joseph recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him. 9 And Joseph s remembered the dreams that he had dreamed of them. t And he said to them, “You are spies; you have come to see the nakedness of the land.” 10 They said to him, “No, my lord, your servants have come to buy food. 11 We are all sons of one man. We are honest men. Your servants have never been spies.” 12 He said to them, “No, it is the nakedness of the land that you have come to see.” 13 And they said, “We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan, and behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one u is no more.” 14 But Joseph said to them, “It is as I said to you. You are spies. 15 By this you shall be tested: by the life of Pharaoh, you shall not go from this place unless your youngest brother comes here. 16 Send one of you, and let him bring your brother, while you remain confined, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you. Or else, by the life of Pharaoh, surely you are spies.” 17 And he put them all together in custody for three days. 18 On the third day Joseph said to them, “Do this and you will live, v for I fear God: 19 if you are honest men, let one of your brothers remain confined where you are in custody, and let the rest go and carry w grain for the famine of your households, 20 and x bring your youngest brother to me. So your words will be verified, and you shall not die.” And they did so. 21 Then they said to one another, y “In truth we are guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us and we did not listen. That is why this distress has come upon us.” 22 And Reuben answered them, z “Did I not tell you not to sin against the boy? But you did not listen. So now a there comes a reckoning for his blood.” 23 They did not know that Joseph understood them, for there was an interpreter between them. 24 Then he turned away from them and b wept. And he returned to them and spoke to them. And he took Simeon from them and bound him before their eyes. 25 c And Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain, and to replace every man’s money in his sack, and to give them provisions for the journey. This was done for them. 26 Then they loaded their donkeys with their grain and departed. 27 And as d one of them opened his sack to give his donkey fodder at e the lodging place, he saw his money in the mouth of his sack. 28 He said to his brothers, “My money has been put back; here it is in the mouth of my sack!” At this their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling to one another, saying, “What is this that God has done to us?” 29 When they came to Jacob their father in the land of Canaan, they told him all that had happened to them, saying, 30 “The man, the lord of the land, f spoke roughly to us and took us to be spies of the land. 31 But we said to him, ‘We are honest men; we have never been spies. 32 We are twelve brothers, sons of our father. One g is no more, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.’ 33 Then the man, the lord of the land, said to us, h ‘By this I shall know that you are honest men: leave one of your brothers with me, and take i grain for the famine of your households, and go your way. 34 Bring your youngest brother to me. Then I shall know that you are not spies but honest men, and I will deliver your brother to you, and you shall j trade in the land.’” 35 k As they emptied their sacks, behold, every man’s bundle of money was in his sack. And when they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid. 36 And Jacob their father said to them, “You have l bereaved me of my children: Joseph is no more, and Simeon is no more, and now you would take Benjamin. All this has come against me.” 37 Then Reuben said to his father, “Kill m my two sons if I do not bring him back to you. Put him in my hands, and I will bring him back to you.” 38 But he said, “My son shall not go down with you, for n his brother is dead, and he is the only one left. o If harm should happen to him on the journey that you are to make, p you would bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol.” Joseph’s Brothers Return to Egypt 43 1 Now the famine was q severe in the land. 2 And when they had eaten the grain that they had brought from Egypt, their father said to them, “Go again, buy us a little food.” 3 But Judah said to him, “The man solemnly warned us, saying, ‘You shall not see my face unless your r brother is with you.’ 4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down and buy you food. 5 But if you will not send him, we will not go down, for the man said to us, ‘You shall not see my face, unless your brother is with you.’” 6 Israel said, “Why did you treat me so badly as to tell the man that you had another brother?” 7 They replied, “The man questioned us carefully about ourselves and our kindred, saying, ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother?’ What we told him was in answer to these questions. Could we in any way know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother down’?” 8 And Judah said to Israel his father, “Send the boy with me, and we will arise and go, that we may s live and not die, both we and you and also our little ones. 9 I will be a pledge of his safety. From my hand you shall require him. t If I do not bring him back to you and set him before you, then let me bear the blame forever. 10 If we had not delayed, we would now have returned twice.” 11 Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so, then do this: take some of the choice fruits of the land in your bags, and carry a present down to the man, a little u balm and a little honey, gum, myrrh, pistachio nuts, and almonds. 12 Take double the money with you. Carry back with you the money v that was returned in the mouth of your sacks. Perhaps it was an oversight. 13 Take also your brother, and arise, go again to the man. 14 May w God Almighty 1 x grant you mercy before the man, and may he send back your other brother and Benjamin. And as for me, y if I am bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.” 15 So the men took this present, and they took double the money with them, and Benjamin. They arose and went down to Egypt and stood before Joseph. 16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the z steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal and make ready, for the men are to dine with me at noon.” 17 The man did as Joseph told him and brought the men to Joseph’s house. 18 And the men were afraid because they were brought to Joseph’s house, and they said, “It is because of the money, which was replaced in our sacks the first time, that we are brought in, so that he may assault us and fall upon us to make us servants and seize our donkeys.” 19 So they went up to the steward of Joseph’s house and spoke with him at the door of the house, 20 and said, a “Oh, my lord, b we came down the first time to buy food. 21 And c when we came to the lodging place we opened our sacks, and there was each man’s money in the mouth of his sack, our money in full weight. So we have brought it again with us, 22 and we have brought other money down with us to buy food. We do not know who put our money in our sacks.” 23 He replied, “Peace to you, do not be afraid. Your God and the God of your father has put treasure in your sacks for you. I received your money.” Then he brought Simeon out to them. 24 And when the man had brought the men into Joseph’s house and d given them water, and they had washed their feet, and when he had given their donkeys fodder, 25 they prepared e the present for Joseph’s coming at noon, for they heard that they should eat bread there. 26 When Joseph came home, they brought into the house to him the present that they had with them and f bowed down to him to the ground. 27 And he inquired about their welfare and said, “Is your father well, the old man g of whom you spoke? Is he still alive?” 28 They said, “Your servant our father is well; he is still alive.” And they h bowed their heads and prostrated themselves. 29 And he lifted up his eyes and saw his brother Benjamin, i his mother’s son, and said, “Is this your youngest brother, g of whom you spoke to me? God be gracious to you, my son!” 30 Then Joseph hurried out, for j his compassion grew warm for his brother, and he sought a place to weep. And he entered his chamber and k wept there. 31 Then he washed his face and came out. And l controlling himself he said, “Serve the food.” 32 They served him by himself, and them by themselves, and the Egyptians who ate with him by themselves, because the Egyptians could not eat with the Hebrews, for that is m an abomination to the Egyptians. 33 And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright and the youngest according to his youth. And the men looked at one another in amazement. 34 n Portions were taken to them from Joseph’s table, but Benjamin’s portion was o five times as much as any of theirs. And they drank and were merry 1 with him. Joseph Tests His Brothers 44 1 Then he commanded p the steward of his house, q “Fill the men’s sacks with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man’s money in the mouth of his sack, 2 and put my cup, the silver cup, in the mouth of the sack of the youngest, with his money for the grain.” And he did as Joseph told him. 3 As soon as the morning was light, the men were sent away with their donkeys. 4 They had gone only a short distance from the city. Now Joseph said to his r steward, “Up, follow after the men, and when you overtake them, say to them, ‘Why have you repaid evil for good? 1 5 Is it not from this that my lord drinks, and s by this that he practices divination? You have done evil in doing this.’” 6 When he overtook them, he spoke to them these words. 7 They said to him, “Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing! 8 Behold, t the money that we found in the mouths of our sacks we brought back to you from the land of Canaan. How then could we steal silver or gold from your lord’s house? 9 u Whichever of your servants is found with it shall die, and we also will be v my lord’s servants.” 10 He said, “Let it be as you say: he who is found with it shall be my servant, and the rest of you shall be innocent.” 11 Then each man quickly lowered his sack to the ground, and each man opened his sack. 12 And he searched, beginning with the eldest and ending with the youngest. And the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack. 13 Then they w tore their clothes, and every man loaded his donkey, and they returned to the city. 14 When Judah and his brothers came to Joseph’s house, he was still there. They x fell before him to the ground. 15 Joseph said to them, “What deed is this that you have done? Do you not know that a man like me y can indeed practice divination?” 16 And Judah said, “What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how can we clear ourselves? God has found out z the guilt of your servants; behold, we are a my lord’s servants, both we and he also in whose hand the cup has been found.” 17 But he said, “Far be it from me that I should do so! Only the man in whose hand the cup was found shall be my servant. But as for you, go up in peace to your father.” 18 Then Judah went up to him and said, b “Oh, my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord’s ears, and c let not your anger burn against your servant, for d you are like Pharaoh himself. 19 My lord asked his servants, saying, ‘Have you a father, or a brother?’ 20 And we said to my lord, ‘We have a father, an old man, e and a young brother, f the child of his old age. His brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother’s children, and his father loves him.’ 21 Then you said to your servants, g ‘Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.’ 22 We said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, h his father would die.’ 23 Then you said to your servants, i ‘Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall not see my face again.’ 24 “When we went back to your servant my father, we told him the words of my lord. 25 And when j our father said, ‘Go again, buy us a little food,’ 26 we said, ‘We cannot go down. If our youngest brother goes with us, then we will go down. For we cannot see the man’s face unless our youngest brother is with us.’ 27 Then your servant my father said to us, ‘You know that my wife bore me k two sons. 28 One left me, and I said, l “Surely he has been torn to pieces,” and I have never seen him since. 29 If you m take this one also from me, n and harm happens to him, you will bring down my gray hairs in evil to Sheol.’ 30 “Now therefore, as soon as I come to your servant my father, and the boy is not with us, then, as his life is bound up in the boy’s life, 31 as soon as he sees that the boy is not with us, he will die, and your servants will bring down the gray hairs of your servant our father with sorrow to Sheol. 32 For your servant became a pledge of safety for the boy to my father, saying, o ‘If I do not bring him back to you, then I shall bear the blame before my father all my life.’ 33 Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the boy as a servant to my lord, and let the boy go back with his brothers. 34 For how can I go back to my father if the boy is not with me? I fear to see the evil that would find my father.” Joseph Provides for His Brothers and Family 45 1 Then Joseph could not p control himself before all those who stood by him. He cried, “Make everyone go out from me.” So no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers. 2 And he wept aloud, so that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it. 3 And Joseph said to his brothers, q “I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?” But his brothers could not answer him, for they were dismayed at his presence. 4 So Joseph said to his brothers, “Come near to me, please.” And they came near. And he said, “I am your brother, Joseph, r whom you sold into Egypt. 5 And now do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, s for God sent me before you to preserve life. 6 For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there are t yet five years in which there will be neither u plowing nor harvest. 7 And God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. 8 So it was not you who sent me here, but God. He has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and v ruler over all the land of Egypt. 9 Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, ‘Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; do not tarry. 10 w You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children’s children, and your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. 11 x There I will provide for you, for there are yet five years of famine to come, so that you and your household, and all that you have, do not come to poverty.’ 12 And now your eyes see, and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see, that it is y my mouth that speaks to you. 13 You must tell my father of all my honor in Egypt, and of all that you have seen. Hurry and z bring my father down here.” 14 Then he fell upon his brother Benjamin’s neck and wept, and Benjamin wept upon his neck. 15 And he kissed all his brothers and wept upon them. After that his brothers talked with him. 16 When the report was heard in Pharaoh’s house, “Joseph’s brothers have come,” it pleased Pharaoh and his servants. 17 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Say to your brothers, ‘Do this: load your beasts and go back to the land of Canaan, 18 and take your father and your households, and come to me, and a I will give you the best of the land of Egypt, and you shall eat the fat of the land.’ 19 And you, Joseph, are commanded to say, ‘Do this: take b wagons from the land of Egypt for your little ones and for your wives, and bring your father, and come. 20 Have no concern for 1 your goods, for the best of all the land of Egypt is yours.’” 21 The sons of Israel did so: and Joseph gave them b wagons, according to the command of Pharaoh, and gave them provisions for the journey. 22 To each and all of them he gave c a change of clothes, but to Benjamin he gave three hundred shekels 1 of silver and d five changes of clothes. 23 To his father he sent as follows: ten donkeys loaded with the good things of Egypt, and ten female donkeys loaded with grain, bread, and provision for his father on the journey. 24 Then he sent his brothers away, and as they departed, he said to them, e “Do not quarrel on the way.” 25 So they went up out of Egypt and came to the land of Canaan to their father Jacob. 26 And they told him, “Joseph is still alive, and he is ruler over all the land of Egypt.” And his heart became numb, for he did not believe them. 27 But when they told him all the words of Joseph, which he had said to them, and when he saw f the wagons that Joseph had sent to carry him, the spirit of their father Jacob revived. 28 And Israel said, “It is enough; Joseph my son is still alive. I will go and see him before I die.”

בָּ֖אוּ לִשְׁבָּר ־ אֹֽכֶל ׃ 11 כֻּלָּ֕נוּ בְּנֵ֥י אִישׁ ־ אֶחָ֖ד נָ֑חְנוּ כֵּנִ֣ים אֲנַ֔חְנוּ לֹא ־ הָי֥וּ עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ מְרַגְּלִֽים ׃ 12 וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֑ם לֹ֕א כִּֽי ־ עֶרְוַ֥ת הָאָ֖רֶץ בָּאתֶ֥ם לִרְאֽוֹת ׃ 13 וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ שְׁנֵ֣ים עָשָׂר֩ עֲבָדֶ֨יךָ אַחִ֧ים ׀ אֲנַ֛חְנוּ בְּנֵ֥י אִישׁ ־ אֶחָ֖ד בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וְהִנֵּ֨ה הַקָּטֹ֤ן אֶת ־ אָבִ֙ינוּ֙ הַיּ֔וֹם וְהָאֶחָ֖ד אֵינֶֽנּוּ ׃ 14 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֖ם יוֹסֵ֑ף ה֗וּא אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבַּ֧רְתִּי אֲלֵכֶ֛ם לֵאמֹ֖ר מְרַגְּלִ֥ים אַתֶּֽם ׃ 15 בְּזֹ֖את תִּבָּחֵ֑נוּ חֵ֤י פַרְעֹה֙ אִם ־ תֵּצְא֣וּ מִזֶּ֔ה כִּ֧י אִם ־ בְּב֛וֹא אֲחִיכֶ֥ם הַקָּטֹ֖ן הֵֽנָּה ׃ 16 שִׁלְח֨וּ מִכֶּ֣ם אֶחָד֮ וְיִקַּ֣ח אֶת ־ אֲחִיכֶם֒ וְאַתֶּם֙ הֵאָ֣סְר֔וּ וְיִבָּֽחֲנוּ֙ דִּבְרֵיכֶ֔ם הַֽאֱמֶ֖ת אִתְּכֶ֑ם וְאִם ־ לֹ֕א חֵ֣י פַרְעֹ֔ה כִּ֥י מְרַגְּלִ֖ים אַתֶּֽם ׃ 17 וַיֶּאֱסֹ֥ף אֹתָ֛ם אֶל ־ מִשְׁמָ֖ר שְׁלֹ֥שֶׁת יָמִֽים ׃ 18 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֤ם יוֹסֵף֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י זֹ֥את עֲשׂ֖וּ וִֽחְי֑וּ אֶת ־ הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים אֲנִ֥י יָרֵֽא ׃ 19 אִם ־ כֵּנִ֣ים אַתֶּ֔ם אֲחִיכֶ֣ם אֶחָ֔ד יֵאָסֵ֖ר בְּבֵ֣ית מִשְׁמַרְכֶ֑ם וְאַתֶּם֙ לְכ֣וּ הָבִ֔יאוּ שֶׁ֖בֶר רַעֲב֥וֹן בָּתֵּיכֶֽם ׃ 20 וְאֶת ־ אֲחִיכֶ֤ם הַקָּטֹן֙ תָּבִ֣יאוּ אֵלַ֔י וְיֵאָמְנ֥וּ דִבְרֵיכֶ֖ם וְלֹ֣א תָמ֑וּתוּ וַיַּעֲשׂוּ ־ כֵֽן ׃ 21 וַיֹּאמְר֞וּ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל ־ אָחִ֗יו אֲבָל֮ אֲשֵׁמִ֣ים ׀ אֲנַחְנוּ֮ עַל ־ אָחִינוּ֒ אֲשֶׁ֨ר רָאִ֜ינוּ צָרַ֥ת נַפְשׁ֛וֹ בְּהִתְחַֽנְנ֥וֹ אֵלֵ֖ינוּ וְלֹ֣א שָׁמָ֑עְנוּ עַל ־ כֵּן֙ בָּ֣אָה אֵלֵ֔ינוּ הַצָּרָ֖ה הַזֹּֽאת ׃ 22 וַיַּעַן֩ רְאוּבֵ֨ן אֹתָ֜ם לֵאמֹ֗ר הֲלוֹא֩ אָמַ֨רְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶ֧ם ׀ לֵאמֹ֛ר אַל ־ תֶּחֶטְא֥וּ בַיֶּ֖לֶד וְלֹ֣א שְׁמַעְתֶּ֑ם וְגַם ־ דָּמ֖וֹ הִנֵּ֥ה נִדְרָֽשׁ ׃ 23 וְהֵם֙ לֹ֣א יָֽדְע֔וּ כִּ֥י שֹׁמֵ֖עַ יוֹסֵ֑ף כִּ֥י הַמֵּלִ֖יץ בֵּינֹתָֽם ׃ 24 וַיִּסֹּ֥ב מֵֽעֲלֵיהֶ֖ם וַיֵּ֑בְךְּ וַיָּ֤שָׁב אֲלֵהֶם֙ וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם וַיִּקַּ֤ח מֵֽאִתָּם֙ אֶת ־ שִׁמְע֔וֹן וַיֶּאֱסֹ֥ר אֹת֖וֹ לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם ׃ 25 וַיְצַ֣ו יוֹסֵ֗ף וַיְמַלְא֣וּ אֶת ־ כְּלֵיהֶם֮ בָּר֒ וּלְהָשִׁ֤יב כַּסְפֵּיהֶם֙ אִ֣ישׁ אֶל ־ שַׂקּ֔וֹ וְלָתֵ֥ת לָהֶ֛ם צֵדָ֖ה לַדָּ֑רֶךְ וַיַּ֥עַשׂ לָהֶ֖ם כֵּֽן ׃ 26 וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ אֶת ־ שִׁבְרָ֖ם עַל ־ חֲמֹרֵיהֶ֑ם וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ מִשָּֽׁם ׃ 27 וַיִּפְתַּ֨ח הָאֶחָ֜ד אֶת ־ שַׂקּ֗וֹ לָתֵ֥ת מִסְפּ֛וֹא לַחֲמֹר֖וֹ בַּמָּל֑וֹן וַיַּרְא֙ אֶת ־ כַּסְפּ֔וֹ וְהִנֵּה ־ ה֖וּא בְּפִ֥י אַמְתַּחְתּֽוֹ ׃ 28 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל ־ אֶחָיו֙ הוּשַׁ֣ב כַּסְפִּ֔י וְגַ֖ם הִנֵּ֣ה בְאַמְתַּחְתִּ֑י וַיֵּצֵ֣א לִבָּ֗ם וַיֶּֽחֶרְד֞וּ אִ֤ישׁ אֶל ־ אָחִיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר מַה ־ זֹּ֛את עָשָׂ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים לָֽנוּ ׃ 29 וַיָּבֹ֛אוּ אֶל ־ יַעֲקֹ֥ב אֲבִיהֶ֖ם אַ֣רְצָה כְּנָ֑עַן וַיַּגִּ֣ידוּ ל֔וֹ אֵ֛ת כָּל ־ הַקֹּרֹ֥ת אֹתָ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר ׃ 30 דִּ֠בֶּר הָאִ֨ישׁ אֲדֹנֵ֥י הָאָ֛רֶץ אִתָּ֖נוּ קָשׁ֑וֹת וַיִּתֵּ֣ן אֹתָ֔נוּ כִּֽמְרַגְּלִ֖ים אֶת ־ הָאָֽרֶץ ׃ 31 וַנֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֖יו כֵּנִ֣ים אֲנָ֑חְנוּ לֹ֥א הָיִ֖ינוּ מְרַגְּלִֽים ׃ 32 שְׁנֵים ־ עָשָׂ֥ר אֲנַ֛חְנוּ אַחִ֖ים בְּנֵ֣י אָבִ֑ינוּ הָאֶחָ֣ד אֵינֶ֔נּוּ וְהַקָּטֹ֥ן הַיּ֛וֹם אֶת ־ אָבִ֖ינוּ בְּאֶ֥רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן ׃ 33 וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלֵ֗ינוּ הָאִישׁ֙ אֲדֹנֵ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ בְּזֹ֣את אֵדַ֔ע כִּ֥י כֵנִ֖ים אַתֶּ֑ם אֲחִיכֶ֤ם הָֽאֶחָד֙ הַנִּ֣יחוּ אִתִּ֔י וְאֶת ־ רַעֲב֥וֹן בָּתֵּיכֶ֖ם קְח֥וּ וָלֵֽכוּ ׃ 34 וְ֠הָבִיאוּ אֶת ־ אֲחִיכֶ֣ם הַקָּטֹן֮ אֵלַי֒ וְאֵֽדְעָ֗ה כִּ֣י לֹ֤א מְרַגְּלִים֙ אַתֶּ֔ם כִּ֥י כֵנִ֖ים אַתֶּ֑ם אֶת ־ אֲחִיכֶם֙ אֶתֵּ֣ן לָכֶ֔ם וְאֶת ־ הָאָ֖רֶץ תִּסְחָֽרוּ ׃ 35 וַיְהִ֗י הֵ֚ם מְרִיקִ֣ים שַׂקֵּיהֶ֔ם וְהִנֵּה ־ אִ֥ישׁ צְרוֹר ־ כַּסְפּ֖וֹ בְּשַׂקּ֑וֹ וַיִּרְא֞וּ אֶת ־ צְרֹר֧וֹת כַּסְפֵּיהֶ֛ם הֵ֥מָּה וַאֲבִיהֶ֖ם וַיִּירָֽאוּ ׃ 36 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵהֶם֙ יַעֲקֹ֣ב אֲבִיהֶ֔ם אֹתִ֖י שִׁכַּלְתֶּ֑ם יוֹסֵ֤ף אֵינֶ֙נּוּ֙ וְשִׁמְע֣וֹן אֵינֶ֔נּוּ וְאֶת ־ בִּנְיָמִ֣ן תִּקָּ֔חוּ עָלַ֖י הָי֥וּ כֻלָּֽנָה ׃ 37 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר רְאוּבֵן֙ אֶל ־ אָבִ֣יו לֵאמֹ֔ר אֶת ־ שְׁנֵ֤י בָנַי֙ תָּמִ֔ית אִם ־ לֹ֥א אֲבִיאֶ֖נּוּ אֵלֶ֑יךָ תְּנָ֤ה אֹתוֹ֙ עַל ־ יָדִ֔י וַאֲנִ֖י אֲשִׁיבֶ֥נּוּ אֵלֶֽיךָ ׃ 38 וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לֹֽא ־ יֵרֵ֥ד בְּנִ֖י עִמָּכֶ֑ם כִּֽי ־ אָחִ֨יו מֵ֜ת וְה֧וּא לְבַדּ֣וֹ נִשְׁאָ֗ר וּקְרָאָ֤הוּ אָסוֹן֙ בַּדֶּ֙רֶךְ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֵּֽלְכוּ ־ בָ֔הּ וְהוֹרַדְתֶּ֧ם אֶת ־ שֵׂיבָתִ֛י בְּיָג֖וֹן שְׁאֽוֹלָה ׃ 43 1 וְהָרָעָ֖ב כָּבֵ֥ד בָּאָֽרֶץ ׃ 2 וַיְהִ֗י כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר כִּלּוּ֙ לֶאֱכֹ֣ל אֶת ־ הַשֶּׁ֔בֶר אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֵבִ֖יאוּ מִמִּצְרָ֑יִם וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם֙ אֲבִיהֶ֔ם שֻׁ֖בוּ שִׁבְרוּ ־ לָ֥נוּ מְעַט ־ אֹֽכֶל ׃ 3 וַיֹּ֧אמֶר אֵלָ֛יו יְהוּדָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר הָעֵ֣ד הֵעִד֩ בָּ֨נוּ הָאִ֤ישׁ לֵאמֹר֙ לֹֽא ־ תִרְא֣וּ פָנַ֔י בִּלְתִּ֖י אֲחִיכֶ֥ם אִתְּכֶֽם ׃ 4 אִם ־ יֶשְׁךָ֛ מְשַׁלֵּ֥חַ אֶת ־ אָחִ֖ינוּ אִתָּ֑נוּ נֵרְדָ֕ה וְנִשְׁבְּרָ֥ה לְךָ֖ אֹֽכֶל ׃ 5 וְאִם ־ אֵינְךָ֥ מְשַׁלֵּ֖חַ לֹ֣א נֵרֵ֑ד כִּֽי ־ הָאִ֞ישׁ אָמַ֤ר אֵלֵ֙ינוּ֙ לֹֽא ־ תִרְא֣וּ פָנַ֔י בִּלְתִּ֖י אֲחִיכֶ֥ם אִתְּכֶֽם ׃ 6 וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לָמָ֥ה הֲרֵעֹתֶ֖ם לִ֑י לְהַגִּ֣יד לָאִ֔ישׁ הַע֥וֹד לָכֶ֖ם אָֽח ׃ 7 וַיֹּאמְר֡וּ שָׁא֣וֹל שָֽׁאַל ־ הָ֠אִישׁ לָ֣נוּ וּלְמֽוֹלַדְתֵּ֜נוּ לֵאמֹ֗ר הַע֨וֹד אֲבִיכֶ֥ם חַי֙ הֲיֵ֣שׁ לָכֶ֣ם אָ֔ח וַנַ֨גֶּד ־ ל֔וֹ 1 עַל ־ פִּ֖י הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה הֲיָד֣וֹעַ נֵדַ֔ע כִּ֣י יֹאמַ֔ר הוֹרִ֖ידוּ אֶת ־ אֲחִיכֶֽם ׃ 8 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוּדָ֜ה אֶל ־ יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל אָבִ֗יו שִׁלְחָ֥ה הַנַּ֛עַר אִתִּ֖י וְנָק֣וּמָה וְנֵלֵ֑כָה וְנִֽחְיֶה֙ וְלֹ֣א נָמ֔וּת גַּם ־ אֲנַ֥חְנוּ גַם ־ אַתָּ֖ה גַּם ־ טַפֵּֽנוּ ׃ 9 אָֽנֹכִי֙ אֶֽעֶרְבֶ֔נּוּ מִיָּדִ֖י תְּבַקְשֶׁ֑נּוּ אִם ־ לֹ֨א הֲבִיאֹתִ֤יו אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ וְהִצַּגְתִּ֣יו לְפָנֶ֔יךָ וְחָטָ֥אתִֽי לְךָ֖ כָּל ־ הַיָּמִֽים ׃ 10 כִּ֖י לוּלֵ֣א הִתְמַהְמָ֑הְנוּ כִּֽי ־ עַתָּ֥ה שַׁ֖בְנוּ זֶ֥ה פַעֲמָֽיִם ׃ 11 וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֜ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֣ל אֲבִיהֶ֗ם אִם ־ כֵּ֣ן ׀ אֵפוֹא֮ זֹ֣את עֲשׂוּ֒ קְח֞וּ מִזִּמְרַ֤ת הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ בִּכְלֵיכֶ֔ם וְהוֹרִ֥ידוּ לָאִ֖ישׁ מִנְחָ֑ה מְעַ֤ט צֳרִי֙ וּמְעַ֣ט דְּבַ֔שׁ נְכֹ֣את וָלֹ֔ט בָּטְנִ֖ים וּשְׁקֵדִֽים ׃ 12 וְכֶ֥סֶף מִשְׁנֶ֖ה קְח֣וּ בְיֶדְכֶ֑ם וְאֶת ־ הַכֶּ֜סֶף הַמּוּשָׁ֨ב בְּפִ֤י אַמְתְּחֹֽתֵיכֶם֙ תָּשִׁ֣יבוּ בְיֶדְכֶ֔ם אוּלַ֥י מִשְׁגֶּ֖ה הֽוּא ׃ 13 וְאֶת ־ אֲחִיכֶ֖ם קָ֑חוּ וְק֖וּמוּ שׁ֥וּבוּ אֶל ־ הָאִֽישׁ ׃ 14 וְאֵ֣ל שַׁדַּ֗י יִתֵּ֨ן לָכֶ֤ם רַחֲמִים֙ לִפְנֵ֣י הָאִ֔ישׁ וְשִׁלַּ֥ח לָכֶ֛ם אֶת ־ אֲחִיכֶ֥ם אַחֵ֖ר וְאֶת ־ בִּנְיָמִ֑ין וַאֲנִ֕י כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁכֹ֖לְתִּי שָׁכָֽלְתִּי ׃ 15 וַיִּקְח֤וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ אֶת ־ הַמִּנְחָ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את וּמִשְׁנֶה ־ כֶּ֛סֶף לָקְח֥וּ בְיָדָ֖ם וְאֶת ־ בִּנְיָמִ֑ן וַיָּקֻ֙מוּ֙ וַיֵּרְד֣וּ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַיַּֽעַמְד֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י יוֹסֵֽף ׃ 16 וַיַּ֨רְא יוֹסֵ֣ף אִתָּם֮ אֶת ־ בִּנְיָמִין֒ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לַֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל ־ בֵּית֔וֹ הָבֵ֥א אֶת ־ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים הַבָּ֑יְתָה וּטְבֹ֤חַ טֶ֙בַח֙ וְהָכֵ֔ן כִּ֥י אִתִּ֛י יֹאכְל֥וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים בַּֽצָּהֳרָֽיִם ׃ 17 וַיַּ֣עַשׂ הָאִ֔ישׁ כַּֽאֲשֶׁ֖ר אָמַ֣ר יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיָּבֵ֥א הָאִ֛ישׁ אֶת ־ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים בֵּ֥יתָה יוֹסֵֽף ׃ 18 וַיִּֽירְא֣וּ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֗ים כִּ֣י הֽוּבְאוּ֮ בֵּ֣ית יוֹסֵף֒ וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ עַל ־ דְּבַ֤ר הַכֶּ֙סֶף֙ הַשָּׁ֤ב בְּאַמְתְּחֹתֵ֙ינוּ֙ בַּתְּחִלָּ֔ה אֲנַ֖חְנוּ מֽוּבָאִ֑ים לְהִתְגֹּלֵ֤ל עָלֵ֙ינוּ֙ וּלְהִתְנַפֵּ֣ל עָלֵ֔ינוּ וְלָקַ֧חַת אֹתָ֛נוּ לַעֲבָדִ֖ים וְאֶת ־ חֲמֹרֵֽינוּ ׃ 19 וַֽיִּגְּשׁוּ֙ אֶל ־ הָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל ־ בֵּ֣ית יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיְדַבְּר֥וּ אֵלָ֖יו פֶּ֥תַח הַבָּֽיִת ׃ 20 וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ בִּ֣י אֲדֹנִ֑י יָרֹ֥ד יָרַ֛דְנוּ בַּתְּחִלָּ֖ה לִשְׁבָּר ־ אֹֽכֶל ׃ 21 וַֽיְהִ֞י כִּי ־ בָ֣אנוּ אֶל ־ הַמָּל֗וֹן וַֽנִּפְתְּחָה֙ אֶת ־ אַמְתְּחֹתֵ֔ינוּ וְהִנֵּ֤ה כֶֽסֶף ־ אִישׁ֙ בְּפִ֣י אַמְתַּחְתּ֔וֹ כַּסְפֵּ֖נוּ בְּמִשְׁקָל֑וֹ וַנָּ֥שֶׁב אֹת֖וֹ בְּיָדֵֽנוּ ׃ 22 וְכֶ֧סֶף אַחֵ֛ר הוֹרַ֥דְנוּ בְיָדֵ֖נוּ לִשְׁבָּר ־ אֹ֑כֶל לֹ֣א יָדַ֔עְנוּ מִי ־ שָׂ֥ם כַּסְפֵּ֖נוּ בְּאַמְתְּחֹתֵֽינוּ ׃ 23 וַיֹּאמֶר֩ שָׁל֨וֹם לָכֶ֜ם אַל ־ תִּירָ֗אוּ אֱלֹ֨הֵיכֶ֜ם וֵֽאלֹהֵ֤י אֲבִיכֶם֙ נָתַ֨ן לָכֶ֤ם מַטְמוֹן֙ בְּאַמְתְּחֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם כַּסְפְּכֶ֖ם בָּ֣א אֵלָ֑י וַיּוֹצֵ֥א אֲלֵהֶ֖ם אֶת ־ שִׁמְעֽוֹן ׃ 24 וַיָּבֵ֥א הָאִ֛ישׁ אֶת ־ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים בֵּ֣יתָה יוֹסֵ֑ף וַיִּתֶּן ־ מַ֙יִם֙ וַיִּרְחֲצ֣וּ רַגְלֵיהֶ֔ם וַיִּתֵּ֥ן מִסְפּ֖וֹא לַחֲמֹֽרֵיהֶֽם ׃ 25 וַיָּכִ֙ינוּ֙ אֶת ־ הַמִּנְחָ֔ה עַד ־ בּ֥וֹא יוֹסֵ֖ף בַּֽצָּהֳרָ֑יִם כִּ֣י שָֽׁמְע֔וּ כִּי ־ שָׁ֖ם יֹ֥אכְלוּ לָֽחֶם ׃ 26 וַיָּבֹ֤א יוֹסֵף֙ הַבַּ֔יְתָה וַיָּבִ֥יאּוּ ל֛וֹ אֶת ־ הַמִּנְחָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר ־ בְּיָדָ֖ם הַבָּ֑יְתָה וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ ־ ל֖וֹ אָֽרְצָה ׃ 27 וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל לָהֶם֙ לְשָׁל֔וֹם וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הֲשָׁל֛וֹם אֲבִיכֶ֥ם הַזָּקֵ֖ן אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֲמַרְתֶּ֑ם הַעוֹדֶ֖נּוּ חָֽי ׃ 28 וַיֹּאמְר֗וּ שָׁל֛וֹם לְעַבְדְּךָ֥ לְאָבִ֖ינוּ עוֹדֶ֣נּוּ חָ֑י וַֽיִּקְּד֖וּ וישתחו 1 2 ׃ 29 וַיִּשָּׂ֣א עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּ֞רְא אֶת ־ בִּנְיָמִ֣ין אָחִיו֮ בֶּן ־ אִמּוֹ֒ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הֲזֶה֙ אֲחִיכֶ֣ם הַקָּטֹ֔ן אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲמַרְתֶּ֖ם אֵלָ֑י וַיֹּאמַ֕ר אֱלֹהִ֥ים יָחְנְךָ֖ בְּנִֽי ׃ 30 וַיְמַהֵ֣ר יוֹסֵ֗ף כִּֽי ־ נִכְמְר֤וּ רַחֲמָיו֙ אֶל ־ אָחִ֔יו וַיְבַקֵּ֖שׁ לִבְכּ֑וֹת וַיָּבֹ֥א הַחַ֖דְרָה וַיֵּ֥בְךְּ שָֽׁמָּה ׃ 31 וַיִּרְחַ֥ץ פָּנָ֖יו וַיֵּצֵ֑א וַיִּ֨תְאַפַּ֔ק וַיֹּ֖אמֶר שִׂ֥ימוּ לָֽחֶם ׃ 32 וַיָּשִׂ֥ימוּ ל֛וֹ לְבַדּ֖וֹ וְלָהֶ֣ם לְבַדָּ֑ם וְלַמִּצְרִ֞ים הָאֹכְלִ֤ים אִתּוֹ֙ לְבַדָּ֔ם כִּי֩ לֹ֨א יוּכְל֜וּן הַמִּצְרִ֗ים לֶאֱכֹ֤ל אֶת ־ הָֽעִבְרִים֙ לֶ֔חֶם כִּי ־ תוֹעֵבָ֥ה הִ֖וא לְמִצְרָֽיִם ׃ 33 וַיֵּשְׁב֣וּ לְפָנָ֔יו הַבְּכֹר֙ כִּבְכֹ֣רָת֔וֹ וְהַצָּעִ֖יר כִּצְעִרָת֑וֹ וַיִּתְמְה֥וּ הָאֲנָשִׁ֖ים אִ֥ישׁ אֶל ־ רֵעֵֽהוּ ׃ 34 וַיִּשָּׂ֨א מַשְׂאֹ֜ת מֵאֵ֣ת פָּנָיו֮ אֲלֵהֶם֒ וַתֵּ֜רֶב מַשְׂאַ֧ת בִּנְיָמִ֛ן מִמַּשְׂאֹ֥ת כֻּלָּ֖ם חָמֵ֣שׁ יָד֑וֹת וַיִּשְׁתּ֥וּ וַֽיִּשְׁכְּר֖וּ עִמּֽוֹ ׃ 44 1 וַיְצַ֞ו אֶת ־ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל ־ בֵּיתוֹ֮ לֵאמֹר֒ מַלֵּ֞א אֶת ־ אַמְתְּחֹ֤ת הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ אֹ֔כֶל כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר יוּכְל֖וּן שְׂאֵ֑ת וְשִׂ֥ים כֶּֽסֶף ־ אִ֖ישׁ בְּפִ֥י אַמְתַּחְתּֽוֹ ׃ 2 וְאֶת ־ גְּבִיעִ֞י גְּבִ֣יעַ הַכֶּ֗סֶף תָּשִׂים֙ בְּפִי֙ אַמְתַּ֣חַת הַקָּטֹ֔ן וְאֵ֖ת כֶּ֣סֶף שִׁבְר֑וֹ וַיַּ֕עַשׂ כִּדְבַ֥ר יוֹסֵ֖ף אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֵּֽר ׃ 3 הַבֹּ֖קֶר א֑וֹר וְהָאֲנָשִׁ֣ים שֻׁלְּח֔וּ הֵ֖מָּה וַחֲמֹרֵיהֶֽם ׃ 4 הֵ֠ם יָֽצְא֣וּ אֶת ־ הָעִיר֮ לֹ֣א הִרְחִיקוּ֒ וְיוֹסֵ֤ף אָמַר֙ לַֽאֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל ־ בֵּית֔וֹ ק֥וּם רְדֹ֖ף אַחֲרֵ֣י הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֑ים וְהִשַּׂגְתָּם֙ וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵהֶ֔ם לָ֛מָּה שִׁלַּמְתֶּ֥ם רָעָ֖ה תַּ֥חַת טוֹבָֽה ׃ 5 הֲל֣וֹא זֶ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִשְׁתֶּ֤ה אֲדֹנִי֙ בּ֔וֹ וְה֕וּא נַחֵ֥שׁ יְנַחֵ֖שׁ בּ֑וֹ הֲרֵעֹתֶ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר עֲשִׂיתֶֽם ׃ 6 וַֽיַּשִּׂגֵ֑ם וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵהֶ֔ם אֶת ־ הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה ׃ 7 וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֔יו לָ֚מָּה יְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲדֹנִ֔י כַּדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה חָלִ֙ילָה֙ לַעֲבָדֶ֔יךָ מֵעֲשׂ֖וֹת כַּדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּֽה ׃ 8 הֵ֣ן כֶּ֗סֶף אֲשֶׁ֤ר מָצָ֙אנוּ֙ בְּפִ֣י אַמְתְּחֹתֵ֔ינוּ הֱשִׁיבֹ֥נוּ אֵלֶ֖יךָ מֵאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וְאֵ֗יךְ נִגְנֹב֙ מִבֵּ֣ית אֲדֹנֶ֔יךָ כֶּ֖סֶף א֥וֹ זָהָֽב ׃ 9 אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִמָּצֵ֥א אִתּ֛וֹ מֵעֲבָדֶ֖יךָ וָמֵ֑ת וְגַם ־ אֲנַ֕חְנוּ נִֽהְיֶ֥ה לַֽאדֹנִ֖י לַעֲבָדִֽים ׃ 10 וַיֹּ֕אמֶר גַּם ־ עַתָּ֥ה כְדִבְרֵיכֶ֖ם כֶּן ־ ה֑וּא אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִמָּצֵ֤א אִתּוֹ֙ יִהְיֶה ־ לִּ֣י עָ֔בֶד וְאַתֶּ֖ם Joseph and his brothers are reconciled Intro : Note - Joseph has been 'pure' in relation to women, unlike Reuben and Judah. Will he be 'pure' in relation to vengeance now, unlike Simeon and Levi? God brings about this incredible resolution Joseph tests his brothers (42-44) The reading: 42.1-5 - read 42.6-17 Joseph accuses them of being spies, and puts them in prison 42.18-25 read 42.26-38 Simeon bound, they return and find their money, Jacob refuses to send Benjamin back, even with Reuben's assurance 43.1-10 read 43.11-34 they send a gift to Joseph, he eats with them and brings Simeon out. He asks after Jacob. He sees Benjamin, and weeps. Benjamin 5 portions. 44.1-13 Joseph plants the silver in Benjamin's sack 44.14-34 read 'recognise', repeated Joseph 'remembered' the dreams why the spies, tested, emphasis? Is he testing to see if the 10 have bumped off Benjamin too? 42v37 Reuben 'comes of age' and acts a man 43v14 God Almighty - cf use of this name so far in Genesis. The covenant maker? 43v23 the God of your Father 44 v9 whichever found with it shall die. Like Jacob and Rachel when she stole the gods from Laban. Deliberate link; what's the significance? 44v15 a man like me can practice divination 44.32 Judah, v32, also comes of age. 'A pledge of safety'; he wants to substitute. Joseph reveals himself and reassures them (45) 45.1-9 read 45.10-24 generosity to them 45.25-28 read v3 'dismayed' - translate; disturbed, terrified. In the niphal. v4ff his testimony, so God-centred v24 do not quarrel on the way v26-28; astonishing. His heart was 'numb'. In this story, we aren't Joseph. We're the brothers. Judah finally 'comes home'. Now there can be rest and healing for his soul. Owning and confessing our sin is the route to freedom and healing. To blame it all on other factors (however much they loaded the gun), removes any hope of salvation, since it ignores the root cause of sinful hearts. This is, at the heart of it, a show of Judah changed by God's grace, and Joseph realising it. God's glory. Despite the sin and discord, he has worked healing and reconciliation. Despite sin, he's worked a plan to save and provide (cf Joseph is like a Noah). Judah is the pin up for the kindness and patience of God. FCF. Deception; even Joseph keeps up a deception here until he is convinced that they've changed. Quarreling; being absorbed by our own sin rather than the grace of God. Fractured relationships, long-term. Person of Jesus. The One sent ahead to save many. Rejected and mistreated by his brothers, but in God's plan to provide a way to save. The one who teaches reconciliation and healing, the one who offers it in God's name (Son, your sins are forgiven). The patient one waiting with us as we slowly change. Work of Jesus. He makes the actual route for forgiveness in offering up his own body and blood. Vertical atonement, therefore horizontal atonement. Union with Jesus. We are being trained to be people of peace and forgiveness. We are being trained to be people no longer absorbed in their own sin, but enthralled by God's grace. Invitation. Come and be straightforward. Since Jesus is straightforward. A life of being more concerned with Jesus that with your own sin or pride. Confrontation. Stop deceiving. Stop being preoccupied by your own sin. Stop perpetuating quarrels. Consolation. Come and be forgiven, truly. There is a pardon from Jesus. Wrap-up: Through the suffering of Joseph, God brought about peace and widespread blessing. Through the suffering of Jesus, God has brought about even greater peace and even greater blessing.
