God has established an everlasting Kingdom Introduction : David's last words 'on record'. Last chapter looked back, these look forward to how God will uphold the kingdom and consummate it. 'Legacy' 1. David sees ahead and praises God for establishing his Kingdom v1-7 'oracle'. Introduced as not mere words but David uttering God's word. Rule over mankind (Adamah) justly; rule in the fear of God! Allusion to Gen 1 ? v3-4 in DRD's translation: 'The God of Israel has said, to me the Rock of Israel has spoken: Ruler over mankind - righteous! Ruler - fear of God! And as the light of morning (when) the sun rises, morning without clouds, because of brightness, because of rain - grass from the earth.' David is looking ahead to a ruler over all mankind, and whose kingdom is one of light and life! 'The kingdom is attractive because the King is attractive.' v6-7 there will be opposition, which will be destroyed. cf Matthew 13.41-42. Or simply Psalm 1 or 2. Application direction : What it means to 'rule justly' in whatever our sphere is. How, in Jesus, we are restored to Eden-living right now; subduing and ruling/guard and nurture etc. How kingdom-living is an all of life thing. Whereas kingdom-proclamation clearly isn't. Kingdom confidence. The Bible will allow nothing but utter confidence about God's kingdom progress. 2. The mighty men of David's reign are recorded and remembered [JI Packer, redwood illustration in Among God's Giants] 'honours list' hands closed on sword - not unknown in conflicts of days gone by; eg waterloo. v10 and 12 are emphatic; the LORD gave these victories (through their immense courage) v13-17 may have happened in his outlaw days fleeing Saul, or at least early in his reign when Philistines seemed to be everywhere. v16-17 ie it was poured out in worship and reverence; since they risked their own blood, and blood belongs only to YHWH. v20 two heroes (lions of god) of Moab, or two sons of a Moabite called Ariel? David clearly the 'covenant head'; but all these mighty men did valiant things and were given great victories by God. All of it seen and recorded by God. cf Hebrews 11 . they are here simply because they excelled in fighting for David's kingdom. And since he was the LORD's anointed, their fighting was fighting for God's kingdom; he used their muscles as his means of, eg 'giving rest'. cf brief lists of names (that we skip over often) in the NT. Not just letters, but gospels and acts too. And the LORD sees and regards even giving a cup of water Mark 9.41 Hertzberg: 'The list of the men who were David's bodyguard ends with the name of one who did not betray the king, but was betrayed by him. The end of the list is meant to tell us, 'Do not forget the name of the last of David's mighty men! We are thus prohibited from making heroes of David (and his men). Even here, history was not made by men, but by the grace of God, whose help and forgiveness were needed even by David and his time.' ie by God's grace I am what I am. Application direction : Everything seen and known by God. Even the apparently hidden injustice that led to great suffering and apparent failure eg Uriah. Wrap-up: Glory of God: He establishes his kingdom like the dawning sun in the morning. He sees and knows and records our labours in Jesus. FCF, nature and choice: We refuse to 'rule justly'. Subdue and rule in our spheres. cf Genesis 1.26-28 and then Genesis 3. h1: Refusal to subdue and rule. h2: Refusal to do so justly. Person of Jesus: He subdues and rules justly, he shows us what it is to do so. Otherwise, we inject our own biased versions into 'subdue and rule' over men. Concern for the weak and needy. Work of Jesus: he suffers mankind's unjust rule (even though his office was to rule justly over men, he relinquished himself to death upon a cross); and puts the world and its old order to death. God raised him to life and has established his kingdom beyond death; it is steadily growing and brightening like the dawn. There are still enemies, but they will be destroyed. Life in Jesus: in Jesus, rule justly. Like the mighty men, under David, fought valiantly. It is all seen and known. Psalm 127 cf 1 Corinthians 15.58.

The Last Words of David 23 1 Now these are the last words of David: The oracle of David, the son of Jesse, the oracle of l the man who was raised on high, j the anointed of the God of Jacob, the sweet psalmist of Israel: 1 2 m “The Spirit of the Lord speaks by me; his word is on my tongue. 3 The God of Israel has spoken; n the Rock of Israel has said to me: When one rules justly over men, ruling o in the fear of God, 4 he p dawns on them like the morning light, like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning, like rain 1 that makes grass to sprout from the earth. 5 “For does not my house stand so with God? q For he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. For will he not cause to prosper all my help and my desire? 6 But worthless men 1 are all like thorns that are thrown away, for they cannot be taken with the hand; 7 but the man who touches them arms himself with iron and the shaft of a spear, and they are utterly consumed with fire.” 1 David’s Mighty Men 8 r These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: s Josheb-basshebeth a Tahchemonite; he was chief of the three. 1 He wielded his spear 2 against eight hundred whom he killed at one time. 9 And next to him among the three mighty men was Eleazar the son of t Dodo, son of u Ahohi. He was with David when they defied the Philistines who were gathered there for battle, and the men of Israel withdrew. 10 He rose and struck down the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clung to the sword. And the Lord brought about a great victory that day, and the men returned after him only to strip the slain. 11 And next to him was Shammah, the son of Agee the v Hararite. The Philistines gathered together at Lehi, where there was a plot of ground full of lentils, and the men fled from the Philistines. 12 But he took his stand in the midst of the plot and defended it and struck down the Philistines, and the Lord worked a great victory. 13 And three of the thirty chief men went down and came about harvest time to David at the w cave of Adullam, when a band of Philistines was encamped x in the Valley of Rephaim. 14 David was then y in the stronghold, and z the garrison of the Philistines was then at Bethlehem. 15 And David said longingly, “Oh, that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem that is by the gate!” 16 Then the three mighty men broke through the camp of the Philistines and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and carried and brought it to David. But he would not drink of it. He poured it out to the Lord 17 and said, “Far be it from me, O Lord , that I should do this. Shall I drink a the blood of the men who went at the risk of their lives?” Therefore he would not drink it. These things the three mighty men did. 18 Now Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the thirty. 1 And he wielded his spear against three hundred men 2 and killed them and won a name beside the three. 19 He was the most renowned of the thirty 1 and became their commander, but he did not attain to b the three. 20 And c Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was a valiant man 1 of d Kabzeel, a doer of great deeds. He struck down two ariels 2 of Moab. He also went down and struck down a lion in a pit on a day when snow had fallen. 21 And he struck down an Egyptian, a handsome man. The Egyptian had a spear in his hand, but Benaiah went down to him with a staff and snatched the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear. 22 These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and won a name beside the three mighty men. 23 He was renowned among the thirty, but he did not attain to the three. And David set him over his bodyguard. 24 e Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty; Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, 25 f Shammah of Harod, Elika of Harod, 26 Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh g of Tekoa, 27 Abiezer h of Anathoth, Mebunnai i the Hushathite, 28 Zalmon j the Ahohite, Maharai k of Netophah, 29 Heleb the son of Baanah k of Netophah, Ittai the son of Ribai of l Gibeah of the people of Benjamin, 30 Benaiah m of Pirathon, Hiddai of the brooks of n Gaash, 31 Abi-albon the Arbathite, Azmaveth of o Bahurim, 32 Eliahba the Shaalbonite, the sons of Jashen, Jonathan, 33 p Shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Hararite, 34 Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai q of Maacah, r Eliam the son of s Ahithophel of Gilo, 35 Hezro 1 t of Carmel, Paarai the Arbite, 36 Igal the son of Nathan u of Zobah, Bani the Gadite, 37 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai v of Beeroth, the armor-bearer of Joab the son of Zeruiah, 38 w Ira the x Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite, 39 y Uriah the Hittite: thirty-seven in all.
