You Will Not Abandon My Soul 16 A h Miktam 1 of David. 1 Preserve me, O God, for in you I i take refuge. 2 I say to the Lord , “You are my Lord; j I have no good apart from you.” 3 As for k the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight. 1 4 The sorrows of those who run after 1 another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or l take their names on my lips. 5 The Lord is m my chosen portion and my n cup; you hold my o lot. 6 p The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. 7 I bless the Lord who q gives me counsel; in r the night also my s heart instructs me. 1 8 t I have u set the Lord always before me; because he is at my v right hand, I shall not be w shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my x whole being 1 rejoices; my flesh also dwells secure. 10 For you will not abandon my soul to y Sheol, z or let your a holy one see b corruption. 1 11 You make known to me c the path of life; in your presence there is d fullness of joy; at your right hand are e pleasures forevermore.

In God's presence there is fullness of joy Introduction Do you want God, or do you want his stuff? Paganism vs idolatry vs the gospel 1. We have no good apart from God (v1-4) v1 'refuge'. v2 Do we really believe this? v3 one key proof of our love for God is the love for his people v4 idols and sorrows. FCF: Joy and contentment in YHWH alone vs idolatry. He is my inheritance, and my good, forever. Whereas...we see 'our good' as health, wealth, children, idolatry of family, idolatry of church. The sorrows of running after another god will multiply, and indeed they do. Don't participate in these false gods - not merely a matter of outward avoidance, but a heart commitment. cf worldliness; you can raise children out of the world, but they automatically grow up worldly. [add section on 'Christian' idols] 2. We have one blessing after another if we are in Christ (v5-11) v5 the sense of 'he is ours..he is our everything' v6 thankfulness - we always things to give thanks for v7 bless the LORD. kidneys. v8 choosing a God-centred view of the world. Knowing the stability that comes from being known and loved by him. v9 Joy and security, despite all the unknowns of life v10 confidence that goes beyond death. God will keep his promises; he is the God of the living. v11 The joy of knowing God is already now through Jesus, and fully still to come. Person of Jesus: He models this contentment in the Father to us; he is the true Son before the Father. Dies confident in the Father. Work of Jesus: He dies our death; because we would not trust and enjoy the abundant goodness of the Father (cf Eden again), he took the blame as 'humanity's criminal' - the Son of Man. So that he would go down into death and be raised up as a new creation, into fullness of joy and abundance of pleasures in the presence of the Father forevermore. He dies the death, and bears the sorrow, of an idolater. Union with Jesus. So this Psalm unpacks what life at the top of the hill of Psalm 15 is like - abundant with pleasure and contentment. [what would it have been like for the high priest on that day each year? A glimpse of utter joy and wonder] We share in this joy already now, with complete confidence that he won't abandon us to death (instead, at our moment of complete helplessness he will be most present to us), and in fact has stored up an inheritance for us, and is keeping us for that same inheritance.
