John 1:19-51

The Testimony of John the Baptist 19 And this is the o testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, p “Who are you?” 20 q He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? r Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you s the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.” 22 So they said to him, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” 23 He said, “I am t the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, ‘Make straight 1 the way of the Lord,’ as the prophet Isaiah said.” 24 (Now they had been sent from the Pharisees.) 25 They asked him, u “Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, v “I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even w he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing. Behold, the Lamb of God 29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, x the Lamb of God, who y takes away the sin z of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, a ‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but b for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John c bore witness: d “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and e it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but f he who sent me to baptize g with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, h this is he who baptizes g with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.” Jesus Calls the First Disciples 35 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, “Behold, i the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 Jesus turned and saw them following and said to them, j “What are you seeking?” And they said to him, k “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. 1 40 l One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus 1 was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found m the Messiah” (which means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of n John. You shall be called o Cephas” (which means p Peter 1 ). Jesus Calls Philip and Nathanael 43 q The next day Jesus decided r to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Now s Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found t Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom u Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus v of Nazareth, w the son of Joseph.” 46 Nathanael said to him, x “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, y an Israelite indeed, z in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to him, “How a do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered him, b “Rabbi, c you are the Son of God! You are the d King of Israel!” 50 Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” 51 And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, 1 you will see e heaven opened, and f the angels of God ascending and descending on g the Son of Man.”

We have found the Messiah! Intro : Testimony (of John, and then of the first disciples), and developing belief In all, seven titles for Jesus: lamb of God, chosen One (v34), rabbi, Messiah/Christ, Son of God, King of Israel, Son of Man. The search for the chosen one. Cultural themes of this. OT waiting. 1. John prepared the way for the Lord Jesus (v19-28) v19 'testimony' Not the Christ, Elijah, or Prophet (the Prophet like Moses awaited). Isaiah 40.3; John is self-aware that he is preparing for the coming of the LORD. In Bethany across the Jordan - John is subtle but deliberate through the gospel in placing us geographically. And cf 10.42-43. 2. Jesus is the lamb of God (v29-34) v29 The lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world...this is he. v31 'For this purpose I came baptising with water, that he might be revealed to Israel' 'I myself did not know him' v31-33 his divine mission v32-33 The Spirit 'remained' on Jesus. He baptises with the Holy Spirit. v34 borne witness that this is the Son of God (better textual evidence, the 'Chosen One' of God). 3. People start to follow Jesus (v35-51) 'The next day' v29 and then v35, and then the 'third day' 2.1 v35-36 Some of John's disciples become Jesus followers, which is precisely what John wanted. v38 what do you want? Double level question. Same with, 'come and you will see'. Discipleship in action. v40-41 Andrew - Simon Peter. We have found the Messiah. v42 Jesus names his followers and makes them what he names them (as he did with Jacob/Israel). v43-46 Philip - Nathanael v47 Jesus pointing to Jacob/Israel with the 'deceit' link. Sense is, 'here is all Israel and no Jacob'. v48 You know me. Jesus in a few words has struck at the essence of who Nathanael was. v48-49 Unknown precisely why this is such a big deal to Nathanael. Fig tree, likely a clear landmark - possibly a place of rest or meditation. Combination of all he has seen and heard leads to Nathanael's exclamation. v50 'believe'. You will see a greater revelation of the Father's glory. v51 comparison is between Jacob, on whom the angels ascended and descended, and Jesus himself. The 'Son of Man' is the term which will be greatly unpacked. Above all his glory revealed in his crucifixion-enthronement. Glory of God. God has given the great fulfilment to all his promises in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. He has filled him with his Spirit. The anointed One. FCF . Jesus calls us to follow him, to bow to him since he is worthy. To witness to him. Real-world following, where to follow him is to learn more. H1. We won't follow him, we choose ourselves or an idol to follow. H2. We say we follow him, but will not witness to him and show his worth with our words/attention/money/time. We replace following and witnessing with intellectual, controlled learning. Person of Jesus . He baptises with the holy Spirit; the Spirit remains on him. The lamb of God; the chosen of God; the Son of God; Rabbi; Messiah; King of Israel; Son of Man. He is gentle and patient in training his followers. Leading us step by step to see more of his glory and worth. 'Come and you will see'. Work of Jesus. He is the lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. He empties himself, humbled to death on the cross. His glory shown in his crucifixion. Heaven opened and angels ascending and descending on Jesus, the greater Jacob. Union with Jesus . We find true life in following him, in making him our all. Bowing to him. We are baptised into him by his Spirit. For all of us, our next step? 'Come, and you will see'. Your point of obedience right now. Invitation . Come and find life. Confrontation . Stop following something or someone else. Consolation . He is patient with us, leading us to greater maturity. Wrap up: We have found the Messiah! The OT wait is over. Seven titles for Jesus in quick succession. Who is Jesus? Follow him to learn and see more. Lamb of God, Chosen One, Rabbi, Messiah, Son of God, King of Israel, Son of Man.
