Jesus and the Woman of Samaria 4 1 Now when Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and b baptizing more disciples than John 2 (although Jesus himself did not baptize, but only his disciples), 3 he left Judea and departed c again for Galilee. 4 d And he had to pass through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field e that Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there; so Jesus, f wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well. It was about the sixth hour. 1 7 A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, f “Give me a drink.” 8 (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” ( g For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you h living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? 12 i Are you greater than our father Jacob? j He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, 14 but k whoever drinks of the water that I will give him l will never be thirsty again. 1 The water that I will give him will become m in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” 15 The woman said to him, “Sir, n give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Go, o call your husband, and come here.” 17 The woman answered him, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You are right in saying, ‘I have no husband’; 18 for you have had five husbands, and the one you now have is not your husband. What you have said is true.” 19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that p you are q a prophet. 20 r Our fathers worshiped on s this mountain, but you say that t in Jerusalem is u the place where people ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, v “Woman, believe me, w the hour is coming when x neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 y You worship what you do not know; z we worship what we know, for z salvation is a from the Jews. 23 But b the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father c in spirit and d truth, for the Father e is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” 25 The woman said to him, “I know that f Messiah is coming (he who is called Christ). When he comes, g he will tell us all things.” 26 Jesus said to her, h “I who speak to you am he.” 27 Just then i his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man j who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him. 31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, k “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, l “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, m “My food is n to do the will of him who sent me and o to accomplish his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that p the fields are white for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that q sower and r reaper s may rejoice together. 37 For here the saying holds true, t ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap u that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, v and you have entered into their labor.” 39 Many Samaritans w from that town believed in him x because of y the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed z because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, a and we know that this is indeed b the Savior c of the world.”

4 1 Ὡς οὖν ἔγνω ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἤκουσαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὅτι Ἰησοῦς πλείονας μαθητὰς ποιεῖ καὶ βαπτίζει ἢ Ἰωάννης 2 - καίτοιγε Ἰησοῦς αὐτὸς οὐκ ἐβάπτιζεν ἀλλʼ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ - 3 ἀφῆκεν τὴν Ἰουδαίαν καὶ ἀπῆλθεν πάλιν εἰς τὴν Γαλιλαίαν. 4 Ἔδει δὲ αὐτὸν διέρχεσθαι διὰ τῆς Σαμαρείας. 5 ἔρχεται οὖν εἰς πόλιν τῆς Σαμαρείας λεγομένην Συχὰρ πλησίον τοῦ χωρίου ὃ ἔδωκεν Ἰακὼβ [τῷ] Ἰωσὴφ τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ• 6 ἦν δὲ ἐκεῖ πηγὴ τοῦ Ἰακώβ. ὁ οὖν Ἰησοῦς κεκοπιακὼς ἐκ τῆς ὁδοιπορίας ἐκαθέζετο οὕτως ἐπὶ τῇ πηγῇ• ὥρα ἦν ὡς ἕκτη. 7 ἔρχεται γυνὴ ἐκ τῆς Σαμαρείας ἀντλῆσαι ὕδωρ. λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς• δός μοι πεῖν• 8 οἱ γὰρ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ ἀπεληλύθεισαν εἰς τὴν πόλιν ἵνα τροφὰς ἀγοράσωσιν. 9 λέγει οὖν αὐτῷ ἡ γυνὴ ἡ Σαμαρῖτις• πῶς σὺ Ἰουδαῖος ὢν παρʼ ἐμοῦ πεῖν αἰτεῖς γυναικὸς Σαμαρίτιδος οὔσης; οὐ γὰρ συγχρῶνται Ἰουδαῖοι Σαμαρίταις. 10 ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ• εἰ ᾔδεις τὴν δωρεὰν τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ τίς ἐστιν ὁ λέγων σοι• δός μοι πεῖν, σὺ ἂν ᾔτησας αὐτὸν καὶ ἔδωκεν ἄν σοι ὕδωρ ζῶν. 11 λέγει αὐτῷ [ἡ γυνή]• κύριε, οὔτε ἄντλημα ἔχεις καὶ τὸ φρέαρ ἐστὶν βαθύ• πόθεν οὖν ἔχεις τὸ ὕδωρ τὸ ζῶν; 12 μὴ σὺ μείζων εἶ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἰακώβ, ὃς ἔδωκεν ἡμῖν τὸ φρέαρ καὶ αὐτὸς ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἔπιεν καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ θρέμματα αὐτοῦ; 13 ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ• πᾶς ὁ πίνων ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος τούτου διψήσει πάλιν• 14 ὃς δʼ ἂν πίῃ ἐκ τοῦ ὕδατος οὗ ἐγὼ δώσω αὐτῷ, οὐ μὴ διψήσει εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα, ἀλλὰ τὸ ὕδωρ ὃ δώσω αὐτῷ γενήσεται ἐν αὐτῷ πηγὴ ὕδατος ἁλλομένου εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον. 15 λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν ἡ γυνή• κύριε, δός μοι τοῦτο τὸ ὕδωρ, ἵνα μὴ διψῶ μηδὲ διέρχωμαι ἐνθάδε ἀντλεῖν. 16 λέγει αὐτῇ• ὕπαγε φώνησον τὸν ἄνδρα σου καὶ ἐλθὲ ἐνθάδε. 17 ἀπεκρίθη ἡ γυνὴ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ• οὐκ ἔχω ἄνδρα. λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς• καλῶς εἶπας ὅτι ἄνδρα οὐκ ἔχω• 18 πέντε γὰρ ἄνδρας ἔσχες καὶ νῦν ὃν ἔχεις οὐκ ἔστιν σου ἀνήρ• τοῦτο ἀληθὲς εἴρηκας. 19 λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ γυνή• κύριε, θεωρῶ ὅτι προφήτης εἶ σύ. 20 οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ προσεκύνησαν• καὶ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις ἐστὶν ὁ τόπος ὅπου προσκυνεῖν δεῖ. 21 λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς• πίστευέ μοι, γύναι, ὅτι ἔρχεται ὥρα ὅτε οὔτε ἐν τῷ ὄρει τούτῳ οὔτε ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις προσκυνήσετε τῷ πατρί. 22 ὑμεῖς προσκυνεῖτε ὃ οὐκ οἴδατε• ἡμεῖς προσκυνοῦμεν ὃ οἴδαμεν, ὅτι ἡ σωτηρία ἐκ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἐστίν. 23 ἀλλʼ ἔρχεται ὥρα καὶ νῦν ἐστιν, ὅτε οἱ ἀληθινοὶ προσκυνηταὶ προσκυνήσουσιν τῷ πατρὶ ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ• καὶ γὰρ ὁ πατὴρ τοιούτους ζητεῖ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας αὐτόν. 24 πνεῦμα ὁ θεός, καὶ τοὺς προσκυνοῦντας αὐτὸν ἐν πνεύματι καὶ ἀληθείᾳ δεῖ προσκυνεῖν. 25 λέγει αὐτῷ ἡ γυνή• οἶδα ὅτι Μεσσίας ἔρχεται ὁ λεγόμενος χριστός• ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἐκεῖνος, ἀναγγελεῖ ἡμῖν ἅπαντα. 26 λέγει αὐτῇ ὁ Ἰησοῦς• ἐγώ εἰμι, ὁ λαλῶν σοι. 27 Καὶ ἐπὶ τούτῳ ἦλθαν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐθαύμαζον ὅτι μετὰ γυναικὸς ἐλάλει• οὐδεὶς μέντοι εἶπεν• τί ζητεῖς ἤ τί λαλεῖς μετʼ αὐτῆς; 28 ἀφῆκεν οὖν τὴν ὑδρίαν αὐτῆς ἡ γυνὴ καὶ ἀπῆλθεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν καὶ λέγει τοῖς ἀνθρώποις• 29 δεῦτε ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον ὃς εἶπέν μοι πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησα, μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ χριστός; 30 ἐξῆλθον ἐκ τῆς πόλεως καὶ ἤρχοντο πρὸς αὐτόν. 31 Ἐν τῷ μεταξὺ ἠρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ λέγοντες• ῥαββί, φάγε. 32 ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς• ἐγὼ βρῶσιν ἔχω φαγεῖν ἣν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε. 33 ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ πρὸς ἀλλήλους• μή τις ἤνεγκεν αὐτῷ φαγεῖν; 34 λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς• ἐμὸν βρῶμά ἐστιν ἵνα ποιήσω τὸ θέλημα τοῦ πέμψαντός με καὶ τελειώσω αὐτοῦ τὸ ἔργον. 35 οὐχ ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι ἔτι τετράμηνός ἐστιν καὶ ὁ θερισμὸς ἔρχεται; ἰδοὺ λέγω ὑμῖν, ἐπάρατε τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς ὑμῶν καὶ θεάσασθε τὰς χώρας ὅτι λευκαί εἰσιν πρὸς θερισμόν. ἤδη 36 ὁ θερίζων μισθὸν λαμβάνει καὶ συνάγει καρπὸν εἰς ζωὴν αἰώνιον, ἵνα ὁ σπείρων ὁμοῦ χαίρῃ καὶ ὁ θερίζων. 37 ἐν γὰρ τούτῳ ὁ λόγος ἐστὶν ἀληθινὸς ὅτι ἄλλος ἐστὶν ὁ σπείρων καὶ ἄλλος ὁ θερίζων. 38 ἐγὼ ἀπέστειλα ὑμᾶς θερίζειν ὃ οὐχ ὑμεῖς κεκοπιάκατε• ἄλλοι κεκοπιάκασιν καὶ ὑμεῖς εἰς τὸν κόπον αὐτῶν εἰσεληλύθατε. 39 Ἐκ δὲ τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτὸν τῶν Σαμαριτῶν διὰ τὸν λόγον τῆς γυναικὸς μαρτυρούσης ὅτι εἶπέν μοι πάντα ἃ ἐποίησα. 40 ὡς οὖν ἦλθον πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ Σαμαρῖται, ἠρώτων αὐτὸν μεῖναι παρʼ αὐτοῖς• καὶ ἔμεινεν ἐκεῖ δύο ἡμέρας. 41 καὶ πολλῷ πλείους ἐπίστευσαν διὰ τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ, 42 τῇ τε γυναικὶ ἔλεγον ὅτι οὐκέτι διὰ τὴν σὴν λαλιὰν πιστεύομεν, αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἀκηκόαμεν καὶ οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς ὁ σωτὴρ τοῦ κόσμου.

Many Samaritans believe in Jesus Intro : Jesus is the 'greater than'. Recap this pattern so far. Now: the greater Jacob, greater thirst-quenching well-giver. The greater temple and mountain of true worship. The bringer of the eschatological harvest. All shaped by the gathering in of the unworthy into eternal life; a Samaritan woman, and then many from her town. Remember the evidence/testimony - belief - life structure of John's gospel. Deliberate placement/contrast with Nicodemus. 1. Jesus is the greater well-giver; since the water he gives quenches our thirst eternally (v1-14) Significance of v1 'when he learned that...' Geography; passing through Samaria. Significance of Sychar, this region, and the well. Genesis backdrop, also Joshua 24. Jesus is weary. The 'gift of God' 'Living water'. Old Testament backdrop to this phrase. What does Jesus mean, v14? God's glory: he promises and gives 'living' water which satisfies. He satisfies us with himself. He welcomes all to worship him through his Son. We are 'too easily satisfied' - e.g., with literal water when our deep spiritual and existential 'thirst' can only be satisfied by being right with God. 2. Jesus is the greater holy place; since in Him all people can worship God in spirit and truth (v15-26) v15 an initial misunderstanding, which will lead to understanding and faith. Repeating pattern in John (cf Nicodemus in chapter 3). The woman's social standing. How Jesus gently helps her to see her true need. v20 significance of 'this mountain'. v21 the 'hour is coming...and is now here' v23 v22 you worship what you do not know - meaning. v26 I am he. Why is Jesus willing to tell her plainly, but not others? FCF. Jealously guarding and nurturing a 'sacred' thing that (you think) gets you closer to God. Both Nicodemus and this shameful woman need Jesus. H1. Pagan forms, like this Samaritan woman - whatever she didn't know, she was proud of the well. H2. Religious forms, like our privileged study, teaching, pedigree - like Nicodemus and the Jews. 3. Jesus is the greater harvest; since in Him we both sow and reap (v26-42) v34 meaning of the 'food'. v35-38 The eschatological harvest is here now. Reaping what others sowed. Happening constantly. People bearing fruit for eternal life already now; people sowing for eternal fruit already now. Old Testament backdrop. v39-42 the goal of the passage. These 'outsiders' are gathered in in great numbers. 'The Saviour of the World' Person of Jesus. Jesus himself is (and gives) the true 'well'. Jesus himself is the true place of worship. Jesus himself is the true servant of the Lord, who is satisfied to do the Father's work. Jesus himself brings the harvest to eternal life (cf Psalm 126). Work of Jesus. Because of his coming, the eschatological harvest of Jew and Gentile has begin. He can make the shameful clean, without becoming unclean himself. Because it is a 'credit' payment, which will be 'debited' at the cross. When he fully enters the experience of shame and uncleanness. Union with Jesus . Come and be satisfied from thirst. Come and worship in spirit and truth. Come and join in the harvest, which others sowed for. Invitation. Come all you who thirst. Confrontation. Stop jealously guarding 'sacred' spots or things, when Jesus is the real deal. Consolation. You who labour and thirst, you will be satisfied and shout for joy. Wrap up : Jesus is the 'greater than'. Recap this pattern so far. Not just a theological point of interest. Jesus is the 'greater than' so that the unworthy and the ignorant, the shamed and the proud, can enter into true life.
