1 Timothy Greeting 1 1 Paul, a an apostle of Christ Jesus b by command of c God our Savior and of Christ Jesus d our hope, 2 To Timothy, e my true child in the faith: f Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. Warning Against False Teachers 3 g As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not h to teach any different doctrine, 4 nor i to devote themselves to myths and endless j genealogies, which promote k speculations rather than the stewardship 1 from God that is by faith. 5 The aim of our charge is love l that issues from a pure heart and m a good conscience and n a sincere faith. 6 Certain persons, by o swerving from these, have wandered away into p vain discussion, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, q without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.

K eep the gospel the centre ! 1. False teaching was present in the church at Ephesus (v3,4, 6,7) -of different doctrine v3 -of non-gospel-centred doctrine v4 -swerving away leads to vain discussion without understanding v6-7 [original drivers and motivations; subsequent hallmarks and fruits] 2. Timothy is to call them back to gospel centrality -the aim is love that issues from a good conscience and sincere faith (v5). NB it's not just calling them back to 'truth'. -this is the stewardship from God that is by faith (v4); to proclaim the true gospel and live out its fruits -let's remember that we can't control the outcome when we call people to turn back to the gospel. Timothy probably had a foul-weather job; church doesn't appear to have turned around cf letter to Ephesus in Revelation 'you have forgotten your first love' [Dunkirk illustration - faithfulness sometimes looks and feels like ineffective failure] Jesus: shows and models true ministry and true love. He models how we call people back from false and imbalanced teaching Jesus: dies at the hands of wayward false teachers, for wayward sheep. In him: I need not strive to win arguments, or keep searching for some spiritual top-up. Rather, I keep getting to know better and better the riches which are mine in him.
