The Steadfast Love of the Lord 33 1 h Shout for joy in the Lord , O you righteous! i Praise befits the upright. 2 Give thanks to the Lord with the j lyre; make melody to him with j the harp of k ten strings! 3 Sing to him l a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts. 4 For the word of the Lord is upright, and all his work is done in m faithfulness. 5 He n loves righteousness and justice; o the earth is full of the steadfast love of the Lord . 6 By p the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by q the breath of his mouth all r their host. 7 He gathers the waters of the sea as s a heap; he t puts the deeps in storehouses. 8 Let all the earth fear the Lord ; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! 9 For u he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. 10 The Lord v brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples. 11 w The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations. 12 x Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord , the people whom he has y chosen as his heritage! 13 The Lord z looks down from heaven; he sees all the children of man; 14 from a where he sits enthroned he b looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth, 15 he who fashions the hearts of them all and observes all their deeds. 16 c The king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. 17 d The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might it cannot rescue. 18 Behold, e the eye of the Lord is on those who fear him, f on those who hope in his steadfast love, 19 that he may g deliver their soul from death and keep them alive in h famine. 20 Our soul i waits for the Lord ; he is our j help and k our shield. 21 For our heart is l glad in him, because we m trust in his holy name. 22 Let your steadfast love, O Lord , be upon us, even as we hope in you.

Shout for joy in the LORD! Intro : Why? Why is there always a reason to sing with joy? 1. Sing to the LORD for his word and his works (v1-5) Earth full of his HESED [each passing moment, if we will pay attention] But both Word and works are focused in a special way on his people 2. The Word of the LORD made everything (v6-9) By his Word, ex nihilo. Waters and flood Therefore fear him! [shown in the flesh in Jesus, and the disciples learn to fear him rightly] 3. The plans of the LORD stand forever (v10-12) But he brings the nations' plans to nothing [cf covid as clear example] So God's people are awesomely blessed v12 4. The eyes of the LORD are on his people (v13-19) He sees everyone and their hearts and deeds But might and power won't save The eye of the LORD on those who 'fear' him, who 'hope' in his HESED (v18) [cf a parents' eyes see all the crowd, but are specially on their children to guard and bless] He alone delivers - so trust him! (v19) 5. The LORD's people wait for, trust, and rejoice in the LORD (v20-22) This is the response of the LORD's people to knowing the LORD, his word and works. The HESED which 'fills the earth' is 'upon the LORD's people (v22) [cf Simeon and Anna; waiting. Now, our watchfulness] How to become one of his people? Trust in him. Jesus' invitation to the Kingdom is open to all. Glory of God : his word is upright and faithful; his eye is on his people to save them FCF . We trust in great strength of one kind or another. H1 . Actual wealth, power. Network and connections and social influence. Data and information. H2 . Trusting in having the right principles and system. We plan and plan. Trusting our plans. Person of Jesus . Shows us what it is to be glad in the Father. He is the very Word of the Father, now in flesh appearing. He shows the creative power of the Word of God, eg calming the storm. Work of Jesus . The counsel of men appears to have succeeded. But God brings the wisdom of man to be pure folly. The steadfast love of God shown and nailed down for us. Union with Jesus . Learning to wait, hope. To rejoice. To trust his words and plans more than my own. To become more fluent in knowing that his HESED truly is 'upon me' in Christ, and that nothing can separate me from his love. Invitation . Come and trust him as your help and shield. Sing as you wait! Confrontation . Stop trusting in your plans and principles. Fear him instead! Consolation . Keep waiting, for a glorious day is coming! Wrap up: Shout for joy to the LORD! Why? Because of his word and his works, all placed in HESED upon his people in Christ.
