Lead Me in Your Righteousness 5 To the choirmaster: for the flutes. A Psalm of David. 1 Give ear to my words, O Lord ; consider my u groaning. 2 Give attention to the sound of my cry, my v King and my God, for w to you do I pray. 3 O Lord , in x the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you 1 and y watch. 4 For you are not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not dwell with you. 5 The z boastful shall not a stand before your eyes; you b hate all evildoers. 6 You destroy those who speak c lies; the Lord abhors d the bloodthirsty and deceitful man. 7 But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house. I will e bow down f toward your g holy temple in the fear of you. 8 h Lead me, O Lord , in your righteousness because of my enemies; i make your way straight before me. 9 For there is no truth in their mouth; their inmost self is j destruction; k their throat is l an open grave; they m flatter with their tongue. 10 n Make them bear their guilt, O God; let them o fall by their own counsels; because of the abundance of their transgressions cast them out, for they have rebelled against you. 11 But let all who p take refuge in you q rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may r exult in you. 12 For you s bless the righteous, O Lord ; you t cover him with favor as with u a shield.

Sermon notes
The LORD covers his people with favour Introduction Can we have confidence in prayer? If so how, and why? 1. The LORD hears his people (v1-3) v1 Their groaning (and cf Romans 8.26) v2 Their prayers are to our covenant King and God; 'my' v3 So we can watch and pray 2. Evil cannot dwell with God, but he makes it possible for his people to (v4-8) God is utterly holy and opposed to all sin and impurity (v4-6) 'But' (v7) his HESED - covenant faithful love - means that those trusting in him can draw near and be in intimate relationship with him (v7-8) This is fully and finally shown at the cross; the demonstration of God's glory 3. God's enemies will be cursed; but God's people are blessed (v9-12) Jesus sings the imprecatory texts (v9-10) about his confirmed enemies (cf Acts 1 and Judas). But those taking refuge in God's anointed are blessed now and forever. This is Psalm 2 expanded; it is the gospel in miniature and in fore-shadow! Wrap up Through the person and work of Jesus, God does not simply tolerate his people, but sets his unfailing HESED upon us forevermore. This means we have total confidence in all our prayers - from our moanings to our cries.
