I Will Recount Your Wonderful Deeds 9 1 To the choirmaster: according to Muth-labben. 2 A Psalm of David. 1 I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your g wonderful deeds. 2 I will be glad and h exult in you; I will i sing praise to your name, j O Most High. 3 When my enemies turn back, they stumble and perish before 1 your presence. 4 For you have k maintained my just cause; you have l sat on the throne, giving righteous judgment. 5 You have m rebuked the nations; you have made the wicked perish; you have n blotted out their name forever and ever. 6 The enemy came to an end in everlasting ruins; their cities you rooted out; the very memory of them has perished. 7 But the Lord sits enthroned forever; he has established his throne for justice, 8 and he o judges the world with righteousness; he p judges the peoples with uprightness. 9 The Lord is q a stronghold for r the oppressed, a stronghold in s times of trouble. 10 And those who t know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord , have not forsaken those who seek you. 11 Sing praises to the Lord , who u sits enthroned in Zion! Tell among the peoples his v deeds! 12 For he who w avenges blood is mindful of them; he x does not forget the cry of the afflicted. 13 y Be gracious to me, O Lord ! See my affliction from those who hate me, O you who lift me up from z the gates of death, 14 that I may recount all your praises, that in the gates of a the daughter of Zion I may b rejoice in your salvation. 15 The nations have sunk in c the pit that they made; in d the net that they hid, their own foot has been caught. 16 The Lord has made himself e known; he has executed judgment; the wicked are snared in the work of their own hands. Higgaion. 1 Selah 17 The wicked shall f return to Sheol, all the nations that g forget God. 18 For the needy shall not always be forgotten, and h the hope of the poor shall not perish forever. 19 i Arise, O Lord ! Let not j man prevail; let the nations be judged before you! 20 Put them in fear, O Lord ! Let the nations know that they are but j men! Selah

Sermon notes
The LORD has established his throne for justice Intro how right wing gets angry about sacrilege/sanctity. left wing about oppression and liberation. But the Bible holds both together; because of sacrilege, there is oppression. God will undo oppression, and where we follow his guidelines, there will be less of it. 1. Praise God for his justice (v1-6) v1-2 Not a lament, but a hymn of praise v3-6 Rehearsing God's justice and praising Him 2. The LORD is a stronghold for the oppressed (v7-12) v7-8 what does this mean in the 'present tense'. justice; 'equity'/uprightness. v9-10. Stronghold for the oppressed. What it means to be 'poor' in the Bible. 'Afflicted' (eg Psalm 102). v11-12 The mighty judge does not forget the cry of the afflicted (cf Psalm 8; mighty yet eye on the weak) 3. There is bright hope for the future (v13-20) v13-14 how to pray in light of all this v15-16 the 'prophetic perfect' v17-18 God will put things right. The needy won't be forgotten; the hope of the poor won't die. v19-20 this is like the simple prayer, 'Come Lord Jesus' FCF: oppression, affliction and 'neediness'. Those who know it (because it is painfully revealed in them) and those who don't. Person - Jesus the friend to the needy and outcast. He preaches that the poor in spirit are blessed, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Work - becomes the needy one. Alone, naked, with no money or clothes, or food. Thirsty. Union - I know that affliction gives way to glory. And so I can rejoice in my suffering now. Wrap-up Come, Lord Jesus
