In the Shadow of Your Wings 17 A f Prayer of David. 1 Hear a just cause, O Lord ; g attend to my cry! Give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit! 2 From your presence h let my vindication come! Let your eyes behold the right! 3 You have i tried my heart, you have j visited me by k night, you have l tested me, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress. 4 With regard to the works of man, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent. 5 My steps have m held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped. 6 I n call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; o incline your ear to me; hear my words. 7 p Wondrously show 1 your steadfast love, O Savior of those who seek refuge from q their adversaries at your right hand. 8 Keep me as r the apple of your eye; hide me in s the shadow of your wings, 9 from the wicked who do me violence, my deadly enemies who t surround me. 10 u They close their hearts to pity; with their mouths they v speak arrogantly. 11 They have now surrounded our w steps; they set their eyes to x cast us to the ground. 12 He is like a lion eager to tear, as a young lion y lurking in ambush. 13 Arise, O Lord ! Confront him, subdue him! Deliver my soul from the wicked by your sword, 14 from men by your hand, O Lord , from z men of the world whose a portion is in this life. 1 You fill their womb with treasure; 2 they are satisfied with b children, and they leave their abundance to their infants. 15 As for me, I shall c behold your face in righteousness; when I d awake, I shall be e satisfied with your likeness.

Sermon notes
We will see God and be satisfied! Intro this is a 'prayer' 1. Hear my cry for help, O LORD! (v1-9) v1 -2 Theme of 'righteousness' (just cause v1, and then v15 'in righteousness'). Asking for vindication. v3-5 He is confident of being 'right' before God v6-9 Confidence in God's unshakeable, loyal, abundant covenant love. FCF: We're tested and we are found guilty of deceit. We do transgress with our mouth. We don't avoid the paths of the violent, we don't hold fast to your paths. Our feet do slip. How can we sing this? Person of Jesus: because this is Jesus who personifies and fulfils and thus sings this. He entrusts himself to God for deliverance (like v7-9) 2. Life without God is brutal, but God's people will be abundantly satisfied (v10-15) v10-12 brutal, as in dehumanised. v13 call for God to arise and deliver v14 despite the many blessings, this life is all there is to enjoy if you are not right with God. Links to previous Psalm; 'portion'; the contrast between men of this world whose portion is in this life, and God's people, whose portion is God himself. v15 cf Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Work of Jesus: we see in v10-12. Jesus crucified like an enemy of God; godless men tear at him like angry lions. But God arose and delivered his soul from death. Through the cross, God has confronted and subdued this evil age, and won. Union with Jesus. We are saved out of the transient vanity of this life (v14), and into the eternal joy of v15, through union with Jesus by faith. So we sing, along with Jesus, this Psalm calling on God to deliver us here and now out of awful godlessness. Knowing and enjoying all along the joy of 'beholding God', now and to come. -Key question to check our hearts. Are we thrilled by remembering v15? Wrap-up 'Behold'; he wants God to 'behold' what is right in the situation. And we have the promise that we will, in and through Christ, 'behold' God himself.
