NT
Hebrews 12:1-11
Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us,
let us also a lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us,
inference
and let us b run with c endurance the race that is set before us,
1 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the 2 a author and perfecter of faith,
who for the joy set before Him b endured the cross,
c despising the shame,
and has d sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
series
For a consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself,

a You have not yet resisted 1 b to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin;
and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,
factinterpretation
“ a My son , do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord ,
Nor b faint when you are reproved by Him ;
a For those b whom the Lord loves He disciplines ,
And He scourges every son whom He receives .”
It is for discipline that you endure;
a God deals with you as with sons;
for what son is there whom his father does not discipline?
bilateral
But if you are without discipline, a of which all have become partakers,
then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

ideaexplanation
Furthermore, we had 1 earthly fathers to discipline us,
and we a respected them;
shall we not much rather be subject to b the Father of 2 spirits, and c live?
For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them,
but He disciplines us for our good,
a so that we may share His holiness.
comparison
All discipline a for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful;
yet to those who have been trained by it,
afterwards it yields the b peaceful fruit of righteousness.

Notes
Christian Discipline is indispensable and invaluable for: Character Development Increasing Fruitfulness As an athlete, we must be disciplined before the race and during the race. There are different types of discipline. Internal & External. Instructive & Corrective. There are different forms of discipline. Difficult situations, illnesses, misfortunes, reversals, adversity, persecution, etc. Jesus is the Model and motivation in Discipline. Discipline is painful, but profitable. We do not realize this in real time, but after it has accomplished its purpose. Discipline proves love and legitimacy. Discipline is pervasive. We are all disciplined. The discipline of parents vs. the Discipline of God = and a fortiori argument in this text. Discipline is training opportunities. Discipline is like pruning. Discipline is like pedagogy. Discipline is like athletic training. Discipline . . . Proves love. Produces endurance Produces holiness Produce righteousness
