For me the toughest part was seeing the bilateral relationship. It helped me to summarize each of the biggest three arcs in one statement. The key points of this passage are: - Paul thanks God for the fruit in the Colossians' life. - the reason for that fruit is their having been taught by Epaphras - Epaphras told Paul about this fruit and since then he began to constantly pray for them This whole passage revolves logically around Epaphras. The results of his work is the ground for Paul's thankfulness towards God as well as the ground for his constant prayers for further growth. Paul didn't just say "Great, God converted more people and is going to make them persevere", but after thanking God for converting them, he started to continually pray for increasing strength and growth and love and joy in their lives. The root of all those fruits is God's supernatural salvation in which he gave them the privilege to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He accomplished this in three steps: 1. by delivering them from the domain of darkness 2. Transfering them to the kingdom of his beloved son 3. in whom there is the forgiveness of sins We can now look at this in chronological order: Epaphras, the faithful servant, preached the Gospel to the Colossians, which resulted in God's supernatural salvation of them in which he forgave all their sins through Christ, in whose kingdom they now live, which means that they no longer live in darkness. Epaphras was the firsthand witness of that. He saw in their lives the manifestations of this spiritual truth. When he came to visit Paul, he told him and Timothy what happened. This led to Paul rejoicing over them, thanking God for what He has done among them and beginning a continual pattern of asking God to do more among them and increase their fruit unto the day that he sent them this letter. Application: If you hear about someone coming to a saving faith in Christ, don't just thank God, but pray with all your heart for their growth in all aspects of their lives! Don't forget praying not only for unbelievers, but also for believers. Ga 6:10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. How to continue: Actually, the last arc containing those three propositions, is much larger, and contains all the verses until verse 23. In it Paul explains to them who this Jesus who saved them is and what he did. Verse 23 sums up everything Paul said before.
