So Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said: “Men of Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious.
So Paul told the men of Athens, "I noticed that you are very religious in every way.
For as I passed along and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, ‘To the unknown god.’
For I've seen among your shines, an altar 'To the unknown god."
ground
What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.
This god you worship without knowing him, this is the One I'm telling you about.
ideaexplanation
The God who made the world and everything in it,
Since He's the God who made the world and everything in it.
being Lord of heaven and earth,
He is the Lord of heaven and earth.
does not live in temples made by man,
Therefore He does not live in man-made temples
nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything,
nor does he need humans to serve him in any way at all,
series
since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.
since He gives life and breath and everything else to all mankind.
inference
And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth,
And from one human being He made every nation of humanity to live all over the earth,
having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place,
having decided beforehand when and where they should live
actionmanner
that they should seek God,
so that they should seek after God
and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him.
and reach for Him and find Him
progression
actionpurpose
Yet he is actually not far from each one of us,
even though He is actually very close at hand
for “‘In him we live and move and have our being’;
For (as you say) "By his power we live and move and exist"
as even some of your own poets have said, “‘For we are indeed his offspring.’
(and again ,) as some of your poets have said, "For we are His children."
concessive
Being then God’s offspring,
Since then we are God's children,
we ought not to think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and imagination of man.
we should not think that God is something that humans can think up or create for themselves
The times of ignorance God overlooked,
Although God overlooked the ignorance of men in times past,
but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
now He commands all people everywhere to repent
because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness
because He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice
by a man whom he has appointed;
and He will use a man He has appointed to do this.
and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”
He has proved this to everyone by raising this man from the dead.
