There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
na28
For the law of the life- giving Spirit in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death.
[Ground for 8:1 - We're ser free]
na28
For God achieved what the law could not do because it was weakened through the flesh.
na28
Method of our Liberation
By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and concerning sin,
he condemned sin in the flesh,
so that the righteous requirement of the law may be fulfilled
The Goal of our Liberation
na28
in us, who do not walk according to the flesh
na28
Identity of the Liberated - Walk
but according to the Spirit.
For those who live according to the flesh have their outlook shaped by the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit have their outlook shaped by the things of the Spirit.
na28
Source of Identity - Worldview
For the outlook of the flesh is death, but the outlook of the Spirit is life and peace,
na28
The Debtors Worldview - Death
The Free Man's Worldview - Life and Peace
na28
because the outlook of the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to the law of God, nor is it able to do so.
na28
Why is the debtors ethic death?
Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, this person does not belong to him.
The Source & Power of the Freeman's worldview
na28
But if Christ is in you, your body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is your life because of righteousness.
na28
The Promises of the freeman's worldview
Moreover if the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will also make your mortal bodies alive through his Spirit who lives in you.
na28
The Promises of the freemans worldview
So then, brothers and sisters, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh
(for if you live according to the flesh, you will die), but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live.
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God.
For you did not receive the spirit of slavery leading again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption, by whom we cry, “Abba, Father.”
The Spirit himself bears witness to our spirit that we are God’s children.
And if children, then heirs (namely, heirs of God and also fellow heirs with Christ) - if indeed we suffer with him so we may also be glorified with him.
Does this clause tie back to Romans 7:6 ?
wonder of wonders - God's very son, in the likeness of sinful flesh and for my isn!!
What does the Law of the Spirit of Christ mean ? How can a law set us free?
Why front that the law was unable to achieve something? what's the pedagogical emphasis here?
What does it mean that he condemned sin in the flesh?
The core activity in view
It is important to guard against a common error here. It is true that Paul is delineating world-views here, but he is also delineating the source of these worldview - It is accomplished by Christ and not by the Law as verses 1-3 and 9ff clearly show. If we find that we are walking according to the flesh, b/c our minds are set on things of the flesh the solution is not to try to do different, it's to look to the work and spirit of God
Is this the law of Sin and Death defined? A life in the flesh, that is hostile towards God, unable and unwilling to keep his law, comprehensively unable to please God. This is the realm we were stuck in. Until Jesus liberated us and gave us a new law.
The act of not living by the spirit is by putting to death the deeds of the body by the power of the spirit. That is the only way we can live by the spirit. Hence the clarification that those who are not putting to death the deeds of the flesh ultimately will die. This goes back to his earlier argument, there are two realms, two powers, two world-views, both opposed to each other, both leading to different ends, and we are either in one or the other. to be in the flesh is to live according to the deeds of the flesh, to live by the spirit is to live according to the deeds of the spirit, which is nothing less than putting to death the flesh.
If we are in the flesh, then WE ARE DEBTORS TO THE FLESH. And we must pay that debt by living according to the flesh. And we are dying
